Chromebooks are great for their target market, your parents. They work extremely well and boot up in seconds. You'll never receive another tech support call. Most cell phones today are worthless without connectivity. I'm sure you could go as far as using only the phone part and installing apps manually but what is the point? Different products are designed for different purposes and trying to use something for which it is not intended is being dumb. "Look I put Linux on a Chromebook, the wifi doesn't work and its command line only but who cares it boots!"

Every drive that has gone bad on me had early warning signs. Some showed SMART errors in the event log and others made the head recalibration noise while they were operating. But yeah I have been very lucky. My last drive to fail was a 1.5TB Seagate and it was nearly full.

I'm in need of more storage space but Seagate is garbage now and WD had such a bad reputation in the 90s that it still makes me hesitate.

I have yet to experience this DLL nightmare you speak of. I've had way more dependency hell on Linux than anything. Say you find a great program that does exactly what you need. Well the author based it off some obscure library that needs a dozen other dependencies. One of those said dozen fails to compile. I'm not a CS major so the story pretty much ends there.

The only DLL issue I've had was getting some of the cygwin tools. It needed some DLL and their site was useless for supplying it. I just need the one file, not their installer giving me the entire dev environment. In the end I searched for the filename and "index of" and found a copy that way.

I still don't understand how VMS can be compared to NT. They don't even seem remotely similar.
