Wouldn't it make more sense if everyone got together and created a centralized authentication database so that I only have to create one account and I can use it across multiple sites? That would make life easier and save me some time.

I think this is what passport is trying to accomplish, but unforunately, AFAIK, it currently only works on Microsoft sites using Microsoft operating systems. :(

Linux is great for work because I can get my job done. Sometimes I need to edit 4 or 5 files at once and refresh a web page to see changes, etc...

but at home I don't do that. I come home, play and mp3, watch a divx movie, etc...and I do that on XP. Why? Because there isn't any filesharing app that runs on Linux that has as much content as Kazaa. Where else can I find every MP3 I am loking for as well as hundred of movies. Then if I want to listen to an mp3 or watch a divx, its much easier for me to install winamp or the latest divx codec. I just double click and go. With linux I'd have to download it, install the rpm or compile the source, setup the kde file manager to open that filetype with that application, download and compile xine, get the divx codec for linux (which usually lags behind), etc...

And another big point, alot of the movies are slightly over 700M so I have to recompress them to a hair under 700M so I can burn them to cd. I haven't found a linux divx reconder that is as good as virtualdub.

To put it simply, Windows has better media apps, filesharing utils, video encoders, and codec releases then Linux.

You should know that not all TSB are due to problems with cars. Honda releases TSBs on things such as proper car cleaning, scan tool usage, etc... I am a Honda S2000 owner and I can go to http://www.s2ki.com/article/archive/1/ and look at all the othe TSBs for the Honda S2000. All of these TSBs were gotten by Honda S2000 owners from their dealers. I think your problem was that you are shy and don't like to talk on the phone so you would rather search around the internet to find a solution to your problem then rather taking 5 minutes to call the service department at your local dealer and ask the service writer what TSBs are available for your car.

Its cheaper to use linux and buy a bigger memory chip (memory, even flash rom and CF) is cheap these days. It is especially cheaper to do that then hire a team of programmers to write an OS and applications from scratch just so you can use 100K of memory instead of a couple of meg of memory. And a couple of megabyte sized flash chip won't be *that* much larger then a comparable chip that holds 100K of memory.

  18. Helpful information for dealing with phone company on Baby Bells Open to Antitrust Lawsuits · · Score: 5, Informative

If you have problem with your phone carrier (such as a baby bell) giving you poor service, taking a month to install a phone line, etc...There are laws you prolly don't know about that are set by your state's government about how soon the phone company must give you service after you make the request for the service (such as adding a new phone line).

When you have problems with the phone company, look up in your phone book under the state government listings for the Public Service Commission or the Public Utilities Commission. Call them and then ask for the phone number to their complaints line. Then call the complaints line. You will speak to someone that has and will contact people higher up in the phone company's service and management departments that will get your service requests done PROMPTLY. If you make a request for service and the phone company doesn't provide it within a reasonable amount of time, the PSC or PUC WILL fine the phone company for violating state laws by not providing you service within a reasonable amount of time according to the laws in your state.

For example, my mom bought a new house. She called the phone company routinely for a month straight. Bellsouth kept saying there were no more available lines in her area and they would have to engineer a solution and get back with her. After putting up with this for a month she finally called the PSC and told them what was going on. The next day she had a working phone line.

  21. You can't use a car battery on 24/7 Notebook Power? · · Score: 1

You do know that car batteries give off hydrogen gas when they sit idle and when they are being used. If you let them sit around too long the hydrogen gas builds up in the room. If you were to have a spark in that room, it would cause to the Hydrogen to combine with Oxygen to produce water and make a very large explosion. The Hindenburg blimp comes to mind.

The next problem is that having an inverter plugged to a car battery to power a notebook will work...but for a few hours until the car battery is drained anyway. Ever leave your headlights on overnight and forgot to turn them off in the morning...result?...a car that won't start because the battery is dead. Your lowbeams use ~55 watts each...110 watts total...your notebooks prolly use around 80 watts or so...so after several hours it will drain the car battery.

If you decide to use car batteries...I don't think that is safe. What happens if it falls off the car t and cracks open and leaks? The Acid in the battery will eat through just about anything.

Car batteries weigh alot. Like 50 pounds...Yeah they will be on carts, but 50 lbs on a cart is still heavy to push when you have a 25 year old 100 lb nurse or a 65 year old grandma nurse pushing it.

Car battiers are expensive...$60 a pop to replace them every several hours.

    Good luck with your project!
