They really want to ween people off XP.. Will piracy of XP become more rampant because of the "upgrade" cost to downgrade to XP?
MS is pretty much acting as a monopoly. This is a last ditch effort to see how many followers they still have. I wish i could assure that after this stunt they'll have a lot less, but the consumer only knows of Windows and will be oblivious as Vista will be $150 cheaper than XP
And could I install the OS from many years ago on
today's hardware?
You can definitely do that today with DOS and Windows 3.1 on todays hardware. If we move away from x86 architecture, then everything is out the window, but for now, yes, we can install OS from many years ago on todays hardware.
How about Solid State storage drives? They are increasing in capacity. Intel currently has an 80gb model out. It uses NAND flash.
They are quite expensive right now though. That 80gb model costs about $600-$700.
Of course as the manufacturing process gets better the drives will become cheaper and the sizes, larger.
The credit card companies have a name for you people....
A sucker maybe, but a "deadbeat" definitely.
I must clarify that I also am not shopping my ass off for Christmas. I'm trying to minimize my debt and increase my savings for the potential layoff in the near future
Those are some interesting facts. I like that you just put it all out there. I hope things work out for you. I haven't looked at your website, but I have never bought anything off Thinkgeek or any site similar to it; I typically don't waste my money on these little gadgets or geek toys.
Off topic, but I had to respond!
Am I the only one that doesn't buy things from newegg?
I find their prices are high and now that their shipping is not free any more, I am no longer drawn to it.
Their customer service is good, but there are many outfits that have good customer service.
Using the S3 state to Instant boot may cause your system to be vulnerable to the memory swap exploit that was on slashdot about 2 months ago...
I'd rather go with a regular boot. I mean, come on, I do a cold boot like once a week... 20-30 seconds ain't gonna make me more productive
I agree that version control is the absolute best way the 'track changes'.
But, Within an editing session maybe there's a way to show the complete Undo history. It is all available in a stack, but does vi/m or emacs allow you to view without applying, say the 10th edit?.
This may count as 'tracking changes', not sure how useful this actually is though.
You'll never end up doing the Laptop drive/walk of shame if you take your laptop everywhere you go like I do.
I bring my laptop home from work every day and I take it back to work every day. I don't do any work at home though as the "work laptop" is essentially my personal laptop.
I agree that the "no return if opened" policy is hurting consumers, but what I don't believe is people just go out to the store and buy games without trying them as they could with demos and even pirated games!
I'm guessing that about 95% of/. geeks have high speed internet access of at least 2MB/s download. Use it!

It's about time they came up with that revelation. What matters now is that we get out of it by shopping our asses off this Christmas!

I think with T-Mobile in the US after 90-days of being a customer in good standing you can request an unlock code.

All my work is done at the office.
