  1. ONE? flaw on Experts Say To Switch Browsers In Light of IE Vulnerability · · Score: 1

"I cannot recommend people switch due to this one flaw,"

so he's recommending ppl switch due to numerous bugs then? :o)

design and build the device that can "open-platform STB that serves as an A/V gateway to multiple Internet-based services â" one consumer-friendly, environmentally-designed, low-power gadget"

and if reasonably priced your order books will be full...

    and a *decent* keyboard

best thing i bought for my eeepc was an extended battery - makes it far more useful.

I'm seriously thinking of modding the case to fit a decent compact keyboard...

and lets not forget weight and size, cpu and memory are no so critical with the efficiency of Linux

  4. you'll still get headaches on How Nvidia Wants To Bring 3D Glasses Back · · Score: 1
It doesnt matter how fast the refresh rate...

Your eyes say I'm focusing @ 2 feet

your eye muscles say I'm looking 20 foot away (its the relative angle of your eyes that gives the illusion of depth)

given these two contradictory inputs your brain gets confused and you'll end up with a very "used" feeling in your head a best - more likely a headache

try looking here http://www.magiceye.com/ for an hour or so...

  5. When will they learn on What Modern Games Are DRM-Free? · · Score: 1
If the game companies got together and released an opensource generic engine they could sell content / access to virtual worlds quite happily

This model is working NOW, today

games companies are the first to bitch when m$ changes something in DirectX, by freeing themselves from a specific OS (and DRM) they would win more customers, have less technical support headaches and take (partial) control for themselves of their environment.

  6. lack of diversity on Why Mozilla Is Committed To Using Gecko · · Score: 1

there seems to be what 4 render engines, all the more reason to be using gecko! The more different *standards* compliant engines there are the less chance one (*cough* m$) will have of steering the "standard" their way...

  8. learning java on Java, Where To Start? · · Score: 1, Insightful
I really got to grips writing plugins for a PIC simulator I used to use...

Basically assuming the environment (ie plugin host) is nicely written the all the boring nut and bolt stuff should be taken care of, if you can find a well supported java application that uses plugins go for it!

That means you can have "fun" while you learn which is the quickest and best way to learn

I'd highly recommend the java "trail" tutorials, and once you get you're head round the API the api docs are extensive, more than learning a language (which is just really a C type sub set) you are learning the JVM's environment.

Use a text editor for writing code and dont rely on multiple guess itelli"sense" type IDE's

    Enjoy!

  9. a positive experience on "Mobile Plate Hunter" Cameras Raise Questions · · Score: 0

We've had this technology for years (in the UK) and from anecdotal evidence it doesn't seem to suffer from lots of false hits, its had a positive effect on the number of habitual uninsured drivers. And given that a computer can recognise a face with a very high level of accuracy its almost certainly the case that this tech has been tested on a cctv near you...

  11. back buttons on Vector Graphics Lead Wish List For Future Browsers · · Score: 1
The reason people stupidly attempt to knobble the back button is they seem to think its quite okay to do things like ?id=23 in a url or have a hidden field in a form for an id

This makes for a *very* insecure site, the easy way round is to encrypt the data items together and use a one time page impression hash.

When the back button or history is used, silently fail the one time hash and act as if the appropriate action was selected.

A little care needs to be take with multi part forms to make sure you start at the beginning of whatever process.

Doing this with php is basically trivial, but it does take a little extra thought....

The *slight* extra time needed for a query and some encryption is more than made up for by the increased robustness.

  12. common sense on Send the ISS To the Moon · · Score: 1

This is all too like "common" sense - NASA have yet to figure out a safe and sane way to achieve orbit.... Yes it would be nice to "just" boost the ISS and its already more than 1/2 way there already, but lets face it if it was really international china would be helping getting it to the moon...
