  1. Software update also released on iPod Generation 4 Released · · Score: 3, Informative

Apple also released a Software Update for ALL iPods.

The updates (from there site) are:

    New for Click Wheel iPods:
    -Shuffle songs with one click
    -Create multiple On-The-Go playlists
    -Delete songs from On-The-Go playlists
-Select reading playback speed for audiobooks
-Hear the clicker user interface sound through headphones
    -Charge via USB 2.0 connection
    -Enjoy improved playback performance

Updates for iPod with a Dock connector and iPod mini:
-Compatibility with iTunes 4.5 or later and the iTunes Music Store
    -Improved playback performance
-Support for the Apple Lossless Encoder, to enable compressed music encoding at high quality

Updates for iPod without a Dock connector:
-Compatibility with iTunes 4.5 or later and the iTunes Music Store
    -Improved playback performance

  2. Cross platform development / deployment on PHP 5.0 Goes For Microsoft's ASP-dot-Net · · Score: 1, Troll

What I love about PHP is that it is cross platform:
    - The Designers can use it on their Macs
    - The Developers can use it on their XP boxes
    - The Servers can use it on their Linux boxes
(* yeah, I know any of these functions could be performed by any of the platforms but you get the jist.)

Where I work, PHP is used because we don't deploy Windows boxes as production servers anymore (actually just deployed the first Apple Xserve and it is a dream!) So ASP is O-U-T out of the running.

  3. Re:Where is the radio (AM/FM)? on iPod Generation 4 Released · · Score: 4, Insightful

I don't agree that an AM/FM radio is a requirement.

In fact, I wouldn't want a device that included a radio tuner, or for that matter, voice recording and image viewing capabilities. That is the road that cell phone manufacturers went down with the camera phone, MP3 playback, SMS messaging and all that. To some it is a necessity, but not for me.

The iPod is a tool for transporting and listening to high quality music of your choosing, on demand. The ability to listen to AM/FM radio runs counter to this purpose.

I understand some people *really* need a radio, or the ability to record their own voice, or some other feature. Luckily, there is a huge 3rd party industry with high quality products from comapnies like Griffin Technologies that address these concerns wth add-ons.

My iPod Mini has very good battery life. I have never timed it as I have never used t for that long in one sitting but I sync the Mini once every two weeks and I leave it connected over night. Doing this has meant that I have never had the iPod Mini run out of juice. Now my usage is less than the person who walks to work listening to the iPod. I am more of a weekend hamock / mowing the lawn / working out listener.

And you can turn off the Mini. Just hold down play/pause.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't like the 'auction' concept for small purchases. My time is worth way more than the few cents difference and if the provider could be different from song to song, that really makes me run the other way screeming.

The savings would be so miniscule that they out weigh having to manage (1) unexpected pricing, (2) compare/work with multiple vendors.

For a large purchase or one of a kind item, sure eBay is the eWay, but for this, I give it the thumbd down.

Sure Apple may shift price points by 10% or so when a model line is refreshed, but I am really addressing the common question of "why doesn't Apple sell a $500 Mac" which is far, far below the lowest price point.

The original poster was talking about 'saving up' for a new Mac. I don't know about you, but if $100 meant the difference between buying a computer or not, then I would seriously address my reasons for needing/wanting a new computer.

First, you have an unrealistic expectation of when a SERVER will be available. It isn't like a home PC you can stock on a shelf at BestBuy. Most servers are custom configured for their intended use, unliek a home PC. Also, businesses dont' impulse buy like consumers do.

Second, Apple has certainly had higher demand than production capability, but I don't believe that they are 2 weeks behind on your order. I bought a single proc G5 for work and was given a 6-8 week window. I wasn't happy about the long wait time, but I was happy when it arrived 6 weeks and 2 days after I ordered it. Also, they didn't bill the company card until it was shipped.

The other thing I'd like would be an integrated media slot (to take SD cards, maybe memory sticks, or CF) as many notebooks seem to have these days.

Apple notebooks come with FireWire/IEEE and USB ports. With those (and a cable) you can connect whatever camera or other 'card' device you are using and transfer your data over. Much better because you don't end up wasting space, design time, or manufacturing dollars on useles slots.

it should be possible to put a G5 in a laptop.

I have a PowerBookG4 400 (ist gen) and am responsible for an Xserve G5 at work. I can tell you that there is no way you are getting the current generation G5 chip in the same slender sub-1"-including-screen notebook formfactor. Of course Apple is working on this but it must be HARD because just the chip/heatsink is thicker than my notebook so they would have to reduce the height by at least 50% if not more.

The current G4 PowerBooks are great. Well worth a trip to an Apple reseller if you haven't seen in person. They use the same screen as the iMac so it is MUCh better than the screen on my Ti PowerBook G4. A word of advice, there aren't even the first rumors of a G5 notebook and even when they are announced, they well may follow previous Apple releases and not actually ship for another 30-60-90 days. I wouldn't expect Santa to be delivering a portable G5 this Christmas.

    Don't hold your breath.

This has been said many, MANY times before: Apple does not drop prices. Apple likes the price points they set. Rather than sell "last year's" model, they just add more to the current line. This keeps things simple, inventories low, and margins high.

Bottome Line: If you want an iBook/iMac/PowerBook/PowerMac/Xserve, then save your money for the corresponding price point or look on eBay.

  11. Summer of 2004 a big one for Apple on Apple Confirms G5 Based iMac to Ship in September · · Score: 4, Interesting

So July brought Apple 100,000,000 itunes song sales and September will bring new G5 iMacs, but according to this article, August will bring the first newly designed iPod, which will be similar to the Mini (scroll wheel with built in buttons?) but with the feature set of the non-mini iPods and capacities up to 60 GB.

As for September G5 iMacs, there was some blurb about them being able to hang on the wall. Apple's new 20", 23", and 30" displays can (see "Mounting Kit"). Wonder if this is a mixed up rumor or for real.

It would appear, as Apple's PowerMac line is all Dual G5, that some capacity has increased and it would follow that the iMac line will all be single processor.

I am glad to see Apple is getting the Mini into the hands of the Europeans and Asians (not to the excludusion of other continents). I believe that as popular as the Mini is in the States, the demand in the more electronic-fashion concious Western Europe and Japan, will be higher than in the "bigger-is-best-super-size-my-Hummer" US. (Witness cellular phones, MiniDisc.)

I have had my Mini (green) since May (month and a half) and am very pleased. I prefer the new navigation wheel to the nav+4 button system in the larger models and the space wasn't an issue. I have a collection ten times the mini's volume, but was not interested in the larger (even though small) device costing twice as much. To me, if I couldn't have ALL the music, then 1,000 songs was plenty.

I can honestly report that I have only updated the playlist once, as I have found that if you use iTunes smart playlists to generate your most played, highest rated songs, you end up with a list of your favorite 1,000 songs. Makes wanting for #1,001 on the list a rare event.

And the battery is great. I haven't bought the iTrip Mini but I borrowed a friend's iTrip (which works on the Mini but isn't as physically integrated) and it lasted a four hour drive to the beach and still had juice.

There is NO WAY I am going to spend time giving up my privacy and demographic information if the site has not earned the right to waste my time.

When you walk into any store in the mall there is a small laser that is counting foot traffic. Each person or close walking couple breaks the beam once to enter and once to exit. It isn't precise, but it is close enough and further the store EARNED THE RIGHT to count visitors becuase there is a reward - viewing the merchandise. Plus, there is a very low cost (exposure to a low powered laser).

Compare this to a website that would require you to fill out a form, presumably with valid info (the article mentions 90210 as the most popular zip code on the web), and THEN you get to see the content. No thanks. potentially valuable content not worth the bother.

Now if there was some technology that would allow you to store this reader profile and it would be transmitted when you visited a website without the need to fillout a form, I bet some people would use it.

But no one wants to give their drivers license to the GAP store clerk before entering and there will never be a time that, no matter how valuable it would be for a web site owner, people provide valid, accurate data on who they are to view site content that has not earned the right to ask for that information.

But Apple is sort of in a damned if you do/don't situation. They don't have a large market share to begin with and they obviously have a defective product so if they did NOT repair them, it would probably lead to negative publicity (both for not repairing them and having a poor quality product) and they would most likely (in my opinon) lose customers.

My Ti PowerBook (400Mhz G4) was a first gen Ti book and I love the thing but it is starting to show signs of aging (booting the computer always takes a couple trys...odd) but over all, I am very satisfied with the workmanship of this and other Apple products I own. Compared to my Dell, Gateway, and Sony consumer devices, I am happy to spend the premium for Apple's quality and service (when the quality doesn't suffice).

Your comment makes me think of that conversation.
