When Dell and HP stop cloning one another and start setting industry trends like Apple does, then maybe their hardware releases will make some news. The Dell DJ did. Sony gets exposure for new models because they do more than rebrand an Intel box.

I think you have a good point about the editing though but the reality is that everyone has their own prejudces and though the /. editors may try to be unbiased, it is impossible so their interests get highlighted while that which may interest you doesn't.

  2. Room temp water cooling for processor #2 on New PowerMac G5s: Up to 2.5Ghz, Liquid Cooled · · Score: 4, Interesting

I'm no hardware engineer, but looking at this artist rendering (akamai.net is an image host for all Apple.com images) of Apple's liquid cooling system, I think the processors are getting different cooling.

It would appear that the liquid passes over processor #1, then #2, then back to the heat sink to be diffused by the fan blowing over it. This would say to me that processor #2 is getting at best room temp water cooling, while proc #1 is getting cold water cooling.

Here's my reasoning: If the heat sink with the fan blowing over it can cool the water 2X degrees, then when it is leaving the cooling system it is at Room Temp (RT) - X degrees. It passes over both processors and returns to the cooling system at RT+X degrees, where it is cooled by 2X and leaves the system at RT-X, headed for the hot processors again, follow?

So here's the meat of it: both processors together heat the water up by 2X (see above). That means each processor heats the water by X, so when the cool water leaves, it is at temp RT-X, passes over the heat sink and it raised to (RT-X)+X=RT which then passes over the second processor and cools it to RT+X where it returns.

So the second processor is getting room temp water cooling while the first is getting RT-X cooling. What effect will this have on the system?

I can see this being helpful, but at the same time, I would think the desired web default would be to ignore the person who doesn't know what it is they are looking for (isn't Google for that?) or wants to talk about the video stream I am trying to enjoy (isn't IRC for that?).

  6. Rethinking 'free' music on McDonald's and Sony Offer Music Downloads · · Score: 1

I am not so sure this free music thing is going to work. I was excited when Apple announced the Pepsi deal, but it proved unsuccessful by most people's measure. Though they laid the blame on distribution channel issues, I think there are a few things to be learned:

    (1) Do people want to go to 'all that trouble' for a free song? When you have to download software, setup an account, (and perhaps provide a credit card), then find the song you want and download it, just to be unable to play it on your choice of music device (ITMS only plays on iPod / no one else plays on iPod).

    (2) Is a song really that valuable? If I buy a coke or a Big Mac, do I really care that much about trying some new music thing to save the bottle cap or box top or whatever and use it? The Sunday paper is full of coupons for saving much more than 99 cents, but many people just recycle them.

    (3) Is there too much choice? Perhaps people need FEWER options for their music. If I am told I can have ANY song I want for free, I start thinking of music...but the music I am thinking of I already own and listen to now. Maybe the givaway needs to be 'one of these five songs' or something similar, to let people envision what they are getting, then they can better evaluate if it is worth their time.

Just a few free musing on free music.

  7. Re:Pricing on 60GB iPod Coming? · · Score: 1

Apple rarely changes their price points more than 10%. If you look at the cost of a $1100 student laptop or $5000 developer box, Apple's strategy is that they offer more bang for the same buck when they make revisions.

I would GUESS the rational is a canibalization and comoditization of their sales. If you can get the same system 6 mo. from now for less, you might wait and then buy the lower end model. If you know from years of watching the market that to own a PowerBook, you are going to spend $2500, your decision just comes down to when you are ready to part with the cash.

The result is Applle keeps their margins high and demand high for systems that don't have to be replaced along with the oil in your car.

In the Windows world, I can tell you that I only ever upgrade MS office when I get a new computer and it comes with the whole package. It would be 'nice' to have Office XP running on my single PC, but since I bought the thing with Windows and Office 2000, I have upgraded to Windows XP but not bothered to upgrade Office to XP.

Hey, I read your Journal entry about how 'broken' the system is for not adding Karma to 'Funny' posts and how 'unprofessional' the reply was to the bug report.

Well I know this is offtopic which is why I checked 'no karma bonus' (for I have good karma and wish to keep it) but I wanted to reply to you. I am not trying to start a flame, I am just responding to the questions you ask in your Journal and this is the only way /. has of allowing me to contact you.

First, I think it is great that you found an exploit in the moderation system but it is a pretty hard one - first mod someone up, then back down. You would have to have a very dedicated moderator who gets points frequently to follow an account around and do this.

Second, don't take it so personally that people modded your post offtopic - you admit they were. That others didn't get moderated as such does not mean yours were somehow magically not offtopic.

Third, yeah the bug report was less than serious, but when you evaluate a bug report in QA, you have to measure two things - the 'severity' of the bug, and the 'technical complexity' of the solution. If the bug is low severity (i.e. reproducable moderation point exploit that is time consuming to have negative effect on a single user) but high technical complexity (requires re-configuring the meta-moderation system, re-thinking 'funny' karma influence, etc) then it is going to be low priority.

It sounds like if you got that sort of response, you would have felt more valued for finding the issue and better understood why it would not be addressed. But that didn't happen and I think if you read the response "Try posing something other than jokes" with a 3rd party perspective, you can see how true that is - /. is not a standup comedy club - yes the jokes make us laugh but people do read /, for the 'Interesting' and 'Insightful' comments.

Looking at your log of recent posts, the comments modded as 'troll' and 'flamebait', I believe, would have a much more adverse effect on your Karma than an 'overrated' on a 'funny'.

To conclude, (1) I am sorry you were hurt that someone found your jokes unfunny, moderated them so, and potentially destroyed your /. Karma, (2) understand /. Karma is insignificant in the world, (3) *I* value the discovery you made and will keep that in mind when I have moderation points and when I meta-moderate, (4) people are going to disagree and undervalue things that we have alot of energy about and that is okay and does not mean our thoughts don't have value, and finally (5) this is not a flame.

Now if you are a reseller, I don't know if you can right off the retail value of the goods & services donation or not, so that would make the value even lower.

Now the return on the investment:
Well you get smart people in research institutions all over the country dreaming up ways to use 5 Xserves and the 10 way G5 64=bit computing power they bring. So even if they don't win, somebody may get some dollars budgeted to actually buy this type of system outright. Or perhaps they win a different grant and use those moneys to fund it.
Then you have publicity. At least a few hundred /. readers saw it. Does this influence them to but a $40,000 cluster? that's a big nope. Does it influence them to try the Xserve? well perhaps it helps reinforce the production applicability of the Xserve (it runs iTMS and the V-tech super computer and these $40,000 clusters so maybe I shoudl give it a try) Does it make people want to but PowerBooks and iPods, again, doubtful.

    So what's left
So after Apple ponies up $200,000 in hardware and software, less their margins and tax deductions, they still spent six figures on a marketing stunt and some good Karma. Will it pay for itself? Well if only ONE of these institutions who wins a cluster actually adds on to it within an order of magnitude of V-tech, I would say 'yeah' it will pay for itself.
