I think there is a gray area here. Apple is a corporation, and therefore if the guy actually did try to contact them to return the device and they blew him off, then he contacted the owner and they denied ownership. It doesn't really matter that the people he talked to at Apple didn't know what he was talking about - a corporation is an entity with person-hood and he notified that entity. So if we are to believe that he tried to contact them in good faith, then they denied ownership, therefore section 2080.1 would not seem to apply.

What proof? I offer a personal experience and a link to the bill. I offer no proof. The bill speaks for itself.

I don't know where you live, but the cops here have a pretty good idea of what "reasonable suspicion" means. If the cop has a reasonable suspicion then:

A REASONABLE ATTEMPT SHALL BE MADE, WHEN PRACTICABLE, TO DETERMINE THE IMMIGRATION STATUS OF THE PERSON. THE PERSON'S IMMIGRATION STATUS SHALL BE VERIFIED WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PURSUANT TO 8 UNITED STATES CODE SECTION 1373(c).

The hospital example is right on. If you talk to personal who work in ERs you will understand that a significant portion of illegals use the ER as their sole medical care. The two I was that evening weren't "rushed to the ER" and made no attempt to provide any identification to the staff (My wife speaks Spanish) - they didn't forget their ID - they didn't have any.

And in typical fashion we finally come to this:

Would the question be easier to answer if you could see what I looked like, or how I talked?

Ah, yes, the race card. Not well played. people such as you seem to be don't seem to be able to separate race from the issue (illegal is not a race) and can't seem to grasp that "illegal immigration" is not the same as "immigration". It really is quite simple: immigrants are the super-set of people that immigrate to a country. These can be subdivided in to 2 groups: legal and illegal. Legal immigrants play by the rules, illegal immigrants, by definition, do not.

And for the record, my wife is Japanese, my great grandfather was Portuguese, my business partner is black, and two of my very best long term friends are a Mexican from Mexico City, and a half-Mexican. So kindly take your race card and shove it straight up your ass. Douchebag.

So what? I mean, really, so-fucking-what? The illegal problem is of epidemic proportions here. I've experienced it first hand on numerous occasions; just last month I was at the hospital with my grandmother and withing 10 minutes, 2 separate people came into the emergency room with no ID (no Drivers license, no state ID, no green card, nothing) and no insurance so they get treated on the state's dime and not even a billing address to send a bill.

The feds are clearly too engrossed in courting a potential major voting block to do anything about it. I say good job to the AZ legislature. It's really quite simple; if someone commits a crime, breaks a traffic law, etc they need to provide ID or they get their info run to see if they're legal. This applies to everybody. Now obviously, the majority of illegals will be Mexican or Central American in origin: It's not like we have a bunch of illegal Canadian's down here, eh, but that doesn't make it racist in any way shape or form.

I'll save you the trouble of searching the internet for the bill. Here it is, it's not that long: http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/49leg/2r/bills/sb1070s.pdf I don't see anything in there about Mexicans, do you?

There seems to be a lot of bad information surrounding this and as usual Slashdot is going off half cocked without the full picture, let alone RTFA. Gizmodo is not my favorite site, and frankly I think some of the editors over there are assholes (Jesus, I'm talking to you) but some of them are pretty good like Mark and Rosa. Anyway:

First, they didn't out their source: This guy isn't their source, he's the guy that lost the phone. Their source found the device and contacted Apple to attempt to return the device but in typical large company fashion, the people at Apple who knew the device was missing never got that message from the people the guy talked to, and Apple basically blew the guy off.

Gizmodo paid their source for the phone after Apple failed to respond to him. So the guy found a phone, tried to return it to the owner, the owner didn't respond so he sold it. I don't see a problem here.

Gizmodo found out who the guy who lost the phone was and contacted him. Whether or not they had permission from him to publish his name is unknown, but they did talk to the guy. I don't see the entire point in naming names here, but the dude did lose the phone and it is his fault (unless you believe the Apple did it on purpose theories) so while I probably wouldn't have released his name, I don't really have a problem with it as it seems to be a legitimate if somewhat tabloid story.

And finally, after publishing the story, Apple contacted Gizmodo to return the phone and they complied. http://gizmodo.com/5520479/a-letter-apple-wants-its-secret-iphone-back.

So, in the end Apple got their device back, we got to know what the next iPhone will look like, and Gizmodo made a shitload of money from all the traffic the story generated. I just hope that guy gets to keep his job. If not Gizmodo should hire him.

I disagree. Maybe my setup is completely different, but I run a Mac with VMWare Fusion in a dual-monitor setup with only 4GB RAM and I'm in and out of Windows 7 (I spend 20% to 30% of my time in Windows, mostly visual studio stuff) and Ubuntu all day long with no problems, and no real noticeable lag, even running Areo. I keep Win 7 full screen in one of my spaces and I have my center mouse button (yes! a 3 button mouse on a Mac! it goes great with my Model M keyboard) programmed to launch spaces for easy access. I can't imagine not working with multiple virtualized machines.

In the past I've had to run a lot of virtual machines using Microsoft Virtual PC on Vista 64, and that WAS painfully slow, even with a Core2Duo at 2.8 with 8 GB of RAM and dual 7200 RPM SATA drives. In my personal experience VMWare blows Virtual PC away in terms of performance and interoperability with the host desktop / file system.

No. This questions has been asked in the past about filters for birds, whatnot.

Firstly, look at how much thrust they generate (Boeing 777 engines are capable of up to 127,900 pounds of thrust) then realize how much volume is getting sucked in at high velocity. A filter would need to be either very heavy to withstand the pressure or made from unobtainium.

Secondly, jet engines need all the air flowing in to produce the thrust. A successful filter would significantly reduce the airflow to the point where the jet could not move the plane even on a taxiway. It would keep the innards showroom fresh though.

Thirdly, a filter capable of filtering out volcanic ash, assuming one could be built in the first place (see points 1 and 2) would quickly become completely clogged.

Not really a bad question if you don't understand the forces involved...
