I've hat to deal with really stupid customers in the past. In this economy maybe, but really stupid people are more trouble than they're worth. Of course I have a business providing a professional service. If you're selling widgets then yes, I stand corrected.
The only reason that.com was so popular was due to marketing; practically no one in meatspace knows what.com even means. It's just a freaking address for Christ's sake. We need a metric shit ton of new TLDs so that we can get away from "premium" TLDs. It's a lot like when they rolled out 888 and 877 toll-free numbers; 800 numbers commanded a premium, due to marketing. it's a just a phone number, if your customers can find you who cares? Besides, do you really want a customer that is ignorant enough not to call you or visit your site because you don't have an 800 number or a.com domain? I do have a number of.com domains, but I really wish the importance of the TLDs would diminish.
Or it could be, you know, a bunch of superstitious morons looking for a payday... Toxic materials are not generally used to build a communications tower, at least not at level that will contaminate the environment for a large radius. Maybe if they spray painted it with lead / asbestos paint...
The "real" (u-6) unemployment rate is about 17.5%, because the official rate only counts those looking for work. So even if 17.5% of all IT workers were laid off, 82.5% still have their jobs, so yes, it is the same for "most". I got axed along with a significant portion of my department (25%) in May when they decided to outsource a lot of that work to India, but rather than collect unemployment or bitch about it I started my own company. Head still above water...
It is statistically highly improbable (impossible) to release any relatively complex application without bugs. Testing in a controlled environment, even highly rigorous testing, is still testing in a controlled env. Once you release the software the use cases and use environments multiply like rabbits with Viagra.
Well, if the people in Sr. Management treat Engineering the same way they treat IT and Accounting, then they need to get hammered in the marketplace, and they eventually will because their products will suffer. The company I worked for had that mentality too. They laid off 20% of the engineers. My boss didn't know which if his people were to be let go until some of us called to say goodbye. Accounting and Legal made the decisions based on expenses and making sure they didn't have any minority or disability issues that would result in the high likelihood a lawsuit. Productivity and experience were not factors.
True, but Engineering is not the same as IT for example, and should be treated differently. Engineering is a direct cost of producing products, whereas IT is a G&A Expense, kind of like accounting, or building maintenance. The reality is that these days, IT is becoming a commodity.
Sure, for you. If you think there is a lot of IT outsourcing now, just wait until IT unionizes... Some stuff, like construction cannot be outsourced. IT can. My company did it. Did it work well? No. Did it work well enough for the company to survive and post a bigger profit to the bottom line? Yes. Unions served their purpose in the past, but now the unions are bigger and badder than the big, bad, evil corporations they were created to protect the workers from. In a global economy, we are all going to have to accept that there are workers in Asia that are willing to work for subsistence wages, and that is going to affect our wages in the US and Europe. The key is not to unionize. Unions work until everyone is in a union, and if everyone is in a union the playing field is once again level and unions don't help. The key is to raise everyone's standard of living globally, but that will never happen due to human nature.
True to a certain extent. But it's not fear of terrorists that is keeping me from flying. It's having to shit a watermelon to fly. That and not having to rent a car once I get there.
Honestly, the terrorists have won. They have successfully, again, forced everyone to endure even more stupid delays and procedures and will not stop the next incident, because the TSA is not smart enough to think out of the box to what that next incident might look like. While this bullshit is going on I'm just not going to fly - it's just not worth the hassle. Luckily for me, I have no place I need to go that is more than 500 miles away, and driving is probably faster and cheaper anyway...
Having been part of planning and running numerous focus groups and targeted surveys over the last 10 years, I can say with certainty, at least in the realm of software, that what people say they would likely do vs. what actually happens is usually off by a significant margin. Our rule of thumb was cut the numbers in half, then do it again. In other words, in my personal experience, in the real world, only about 25% of the people that say they are a likely buyer actually buy anything. And that's on a good day.
Isn't Android just a mobile distribution of Linux?
No.
What is Android?
Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. The Android SDK provides the tools and APIs necessary to begin developing applications on the Android platform using the Java programming language.

Oh, and fuck domain squaters.

Apparently size does matter.
On a long enough timeline the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

After suffering with Nappy as a governor for 4 years, I can tell you that bullshit is her only skill, and that she's not very good at it...

IT IS a cost center. Any department that doesn't have direct revenue is a cost center.
These days, digging ditches is a more profitable and satisfying job...fully unionized
That's because they're getting paid $40 an hour for something anyone with minimal training could do.
The problem with IT is that there are too many people in the business - the supply is bigger than the demand.
The answer isn't to unionize to get paid more than the job is worth, the answer is to find another job.
