  1. The politics of Academia on Moving from Corporate IT to Science? · · Score: 5, Insightful

One major pitfal to be wary of if you aim to return to Academia is the politics. The life of a new professor is not an easy one, and the climb toward respect is a long one.

  2. Re:This sort of thing wouldn't work well on humans on Rat Mind Control · · Score: 1

That's not mind control, that's conditioning (or brainwashing, if you like). It relies repetition, and the effects would extend well beyond the time you wanted to control the person for. Mind control would cause no ill effects to the subject, and its effects would disappear one the subject was released from its control.

  4. This sort of thing wouldn't work well on humans on Rat Mind Control · · Score: 1

Since this relies on manipulating the rat's senses, it wouldn't be very effective on humans. If you had something that caused a person to feel like there was something pushing their right side, they would very quickly learn that the sensation was false and ignore it. A rat doesn't have this sort of reasoning power, but humans can always override their instincts.

And I love it. It has great battery life, is smaller in size than the Nomad, and doesn't have the loading time issues that the Nomad suffers from. In addition, upgrading to 20gb (though I haven't done it myself) is said to be extremely easy, and can even be done for you at www.mp3factorydirect.com. The NanGo people are still very active in the support of the PJB (check out the egroups PJB100 list) and there are two or three Linux applications to load songs onto it that are being developed right now.

I've had a similar trouble with the keyboard, but it was at around its stated range of about six feet from the receiver. However, I later determined that by hitting the keyboard (so I got a bit frustrated... :D) I could make it work again. I think what happens is that the battery cover comes a bit loose, as this never has happened while sitting at a desk.
Also, the only time I've ever had to reset my mouse or keyboard is when I replace batteries (which I've only done once since last christmas).

  17. Re:cancer is funny.. on U.S. Had Plan To Nuke The Moon · · Score: 2

I believe most new cancer treatment methods being researched focus on completely destroying the cancer once it's taken hold.
Also, it's a specific type of mutation that causes cancer (making cells think they're still in the embryonic stage and causing them to reproduce out of control). If that specific mutation could be stopped, there'd be no reason to stop mutations entirely (if such a thing is even possible).

I'm going to donate one copy to my school's library, as well as giving one or two to key administrators, and perhaps the school's counselor. Going to a small private school as I do, I didn't catch nearly the amount of flack some others did, but there were still a large number of people who dudn't understand what was happening, and that when I had "Trench coat mafia" scrawled onto my locker, they were doing the same type of thing to me that was probably done to the two who committed the crime.
It's my hope that by spreading this book around, I'll be able to raise the awareness of my classmates and school administrators even a smidgen, so that the kids who come after me will have an easier time of it.

I think some member of this admirable forum needs to analyze the dogmas he holds so dear. Just because something was made with the intent to earn money doesn't make it a superior product. In my personal experience, IE is a pathetically flaky product, especially considering the fact that it was written by the same people who wrote the operating system it runs on.
I know objectivism is fun, but don't get dogmatic like that, or you won't be any better off than the people you deride.

This raises the question in my mind as to whether it would be possible to cause AI to evolve somehow. Start off with some simple base, the ability to replicate, a selection agent, a mutagen, and time, and you've got the primordial soup. Of course, if it were that easy, it would have been done to some degree. We would just need a hell of a lot of computing power to get it all the way.

  22. Re:Isn't That Our Purpose? on Spiritual Robots Symposium · · Score: 1

I'd say that the reason we exist is just because we can. To say that humans have an explicit purpose for existing is rather silly. We're the result of a stochastic process that has been taking place for millions of years, so there isn't any particular reason for us being around. As for justifying our existance to ourselves, all we need to know is that we can be happy. That in itself is reason enough for sticking around.

I have one main problem with Napster, and that is how difficult it is to serve my MP3s with it. I have >3000 MP3s, and it takes FOREVER for napster to load because (I believe) it's reading the ID3 tag of EVERY SINGLE ONE. Now, I realize that this is useful information for it to have, but it could be streamlined. For instance, all of the information could be kept ina seperate file, and each time you started napster, it would only look for changes in the mp3 listing.
