I just installed the beta on my system (p200 on win98) - laugh all you want but win98 is what most people are using now (and that's what made napster so famous).
Anyways, it works seemlessly! The average Joe(tm) user will not know what a proxy server is, nor what the gateway is all about... but the instructions are SO simple that it will soon become quite popular!
Mojonation needs to work on the setup. Win98 users are used to 2-button install and stuff running in the systray. Currently Mojonation requires the manual running of the Setup (doubleclick #1), ProxyServer (doubleclick #2), the running of the Broker (doubleclick #3). But what might throw most off is the setting of the proxy server on the web browsers. Although the instructions are extremely easy, this may throw a few off...
Also, running in a DOS window is not really that intuitive for most Win98 users. They prefer systray icons (or even in the invisible background).
What I really like is the web interface with a bit of Java. Anyone using computers today will easily be able to use the web-interface. (That's what I believe will make MojoNation more popular than napster!) No one has to learn how to use an entirely new program.
So my advice: Work at the setup and DOS windows... and for everything else - GOOD WORK!
This is what happens when people in high regard and with incredible responsibility finally realize what the implications of this technology are on their lives. This guy Gets It(tm). He knows that when he is writing a friendly email to another judge it can easily be used against him as bias/prejudice/reason for appeal.
There are two ways of looking at this. This could be good (for those who do not mean any harm). Or this could be really bad. This means that people can now get away with death threats and such (it can't be used as evidence against them) if they don't get caught within 6 months.
I think the length should be 1 year. That way people should REALLY think hard before they write that flame for alt.your-fav-group.your-fav-fetish
There should be a road sign, everything you loggon to the net - "Beware, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law, now go have fun!" Hell, I don't remeber what I said posted last week, by/.'s DB sure does.
Imagine a garage that is a 3d printer. Print up a new car every day... I know, a little far fetched, but it's getting closer to what we really want - nano-assemblers.
We all know about nano thanks to Hemos. But isn't this 3d printing technology just a few layers above the Holy Grail(tm) of technology?
Another user already mentioned that we are now putting the ability to create technology into every person's desk. With nano-tech this would be even more so true.
Nanos will just have to dig into the ground and extract all elements required for building the car of your dreams, if the resources do not exist in your neighbourhood bedrock, you can 'recycle' your old car/bike/metallic/carbonic objects to generate the newer model you just downloaded from: Haxor's 3d Skematix (DeCSS'd ofcourse)
Other quickies for nano:
- Free food (don't ask where the source molecules come from though)
- New computer every morning.
- Upgrade hardware as easy as software!
- Like that new Cellphone, leech it!
- Need wireless web? Create Transcievers for all your friends...
- Need a bigger HD? Download new firmware.
- Need a bigger monitor? Increase the size of your wall...
- Need a new leg... well you get the point...
When is Apple going to realize that their fans are all they have left! Their marketshare isn't exactly exploding... and the only way they can get new customers is through their (once) loyal fanbase.
I have used Mac since Classic II. I was faithful through the PowerPC and Quadras phase... then something changed. I realized what their plan was. They wanted to the be Microsoft of proprietary hardware. They wanted to make it extremely difficult for new companies to clone mac, develop hardware for macs, and even have software created for macs. So, at the end of Highschool I went PC all the way... and never looked back... (although I do have a powerpc at my desk right now for testing purposes, doh)
As far as I am concerned. It is not illegal to post DeCSS, link to DeCSS, or anything relating to DeCSS. I'll post it for the cost of getting a Canadian ISP to host it for anyone. (not neccessary though since it's already everywhere)
Not only that Canada law makes it very difficult for companies to censor things. The Charter or Rights and Freedoms (Kinda like your constitution) has not been hacked to bits unlike the US companies are doing to your constitution. This sort of behaviour is sick and deplorable.
Who runs the MPAA? Companies -> Sony, RCA... where are they originating? -> Asian Countries like Japan, Taiwan...
No wonder they don't give a crap about the US constitution... to them you're just a bunch of brainless comsumer pods.
There is a tax on blank tapes and blank audio CDRs so that the music industry can make up all the extra money they are losing to piracy. So who pays? The honest people do. They figure since you are buying a blank tape / CDR, you are going to use it for piracy.
Fine. Lock me up then. I am obviously guilty until proven innocent. We should all be locked up for using the internet. If we are using the internet that means we are either crackers / hackers / pirates / copy-infringers / pediphiles / perverts / rapist / murdering thugs.
I am sick of the mentality. Since 1% are doing it might as well punish the other 99%
God, it makes me sick. We are losing more and more of our liberties everyday and 99% of the population is oblivious to that fact.
Right on! Let's take this philosophy a few steps further!
My suggestions for the RIAA / MPAA / DMCA / and the like...
1) My they should put 30% royalties on all of the paper, notebooks, printed and printable materials out there JUST IN CASE someone decides to copy a book or magazine word-for-word.
2) Have the copy / cut / paste buttons in your favourite OSs directly linked to an internet database holding all content that is not allowable to be copied and pasted. Therefore, when some pirate decides to copy and paste a quote from a website for his school report, they can catch him in the act! As well as a DB connected to internet ready TVs so that they can control how you watch it (and know what and when you are recording).
3) New paper for books that when exposed to light for more than 15 minutes the ink disappears. Therefore, you have 15 minutes to read the page, or else you lost your PRIVILEGE.
4) Now more VCRs / Blanks Tapes / CDRs period. They cost the RIAA / MPAA way too much already. Hell, why stop at that. No more flash memory / hard drives / stones to write on to make Hieroglyphs.
5) Reward all children by giving them higher marks in school and scholarships for ratting out their parents and friends who are committing or planning on committing these heinous crimes to corporations. 1-888-RIAA-RAT
Down with piracy!, Down with Freedom!, Down with Fair Use!
Now look what you've done. You're linking to sites that can link to the DeCSS through a simple search. That warrants DEATH by listening to Britney Spears at 2x speed...
What do you mean sad? Didn't you read the article? Now it is our duty to focus all our energry and resources into expanding our civilization into the universe.
BTW: Our sun will not last forever. And before then, some gigantic (unstoppable) astroid WILL hit the earth. We better start thinking that if we are the only intelligent life in the universe we better to what it takes to preserve ourselves!
Shouldn't there be one great linux desktop where all the development resources work together against all non-open source alternative?
Why is it that a free society is fighting amongst themselves when they could be collaborating they talent and efforts to create a strong and well-adopted standard desktop for the world?
I know competition leads to innovation... and there is competition - the closed-source software developers.
I wish open-source luck with all these developers being jealous of each other's successes. They should be proud of the recognition the community is getting and always willing to improve the quality of their applications.

Wow. He must decide whether source code is freespeech or not. There's a lot of weight on your shoulders.

I think I speak for all
HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!!!! This is hilarious!!! What poetic justice!!!!
You may now return to your previous activites.
I wonder which Apple employee will now be fired and sued for damages for releasing these trade secrets! Moral at Apple must suck...
"Hold on, before we release this PR, get all shareholders to sign it first!"
How many of you bought this wonderful piece of technology and innovation invented in the US??

The judge was impressed with paragraph 3.
Direct copy from transcript of the judge's statements:

25 The one that caught my eye particularly is the
1065
1 assertion at the beginning of paragraph 3 that "source code is
2 expressive speech meriting the full protection of the First
3 Amendment." That is ultimately for me to decide.
--- (Snip) ---
Wow. He must decide whether source code is freespeech or not. There's a lot of weight on your shoulders.

Before we go rewiring the whole frikin OSs. Let's try it in applications first!

"GnuSpace" is an advanced Gnutella client that let users share both files and computation time. Unlike Gnutella, GnuSpace combines thousands of PCs unused CPU power into one coherent power-source to fuel super services to benefit all.
