And how is this different from the security hole in Corel Linux? Hmm, the Linux hole is worse, and it wasn't reported here in the land of "linux is perfect and has no flaws".
You do have a point about it not being reported... however that's not a Linux problem but a Corel implementation problem... if I'm reading the article correctly.
Deliberate attempts to destroy a business are illegal.
Uh, this _isn't_ an attempt to destroy a business. There has been a huge rise in spam coming from @home, and even messages sent to @home about it have been ignored. This spam is causing problems for other sites, so the UDP is meant to help the other sites lower their spam intake, and to get @home's attention.
I don't know what you're reading, but nowhere in the message I read did I see anything that said "let's get @home." I do see things like Because of this lack of response to serious, ongoing problems, even when they have been pointed out repeatedly,... Looks to me like @home is at fault for not taking any action.
A few weeks ago I went into work to find the local paper with a front page article stating the utility company of this small town was going to upgrade the substations
You know, our local power company needed to "upgrade" our area again a few weeks ago. Nevermind that they'd done an all night (1am to 6am) outage less than 6 months before, but this time they decided it would be more convenient to shut power down at 5am on a Saturday! Allowing for up to 12 hours to do the upgrade of course! Surprise surprise, they started an hour late, and barely got the power back up before 6pm.. when it was already getting dark.
There's not a whole lot you can do at home on a Saturday with no freaking power. Needless to say noone in the neighborhood is happy with them right now. God forbid they might schedule an outage of this length for either a weekday when people will be at work, or better yet, during the night again when the impact to people will be minimal.
> We are discussing whether or not school staff should accept this garbage as an "essay." An idle, short, quick "thought" > is one thing. To spend the time to write the thought down is another. It begins a pattern of follow-through. > No longer is he just thinking it, he's actually writing about it. He has progressed to the point of thinking it is ok to submit the crap for an > assignment. I would not, for example, ever let Steven King babysit for me.
Hmm.. when I was a senior in HS (91) I took a creative writing class. One of the stories I wrote involved a terrorist that bombed his government (no it was not the current US gov't or anything like that).
Let's see, I've graduated, have a job and responsibilities, never hurt anyone, never have done illegal drugs (well, drank underage and inhaled some Nitrious Oxide), but gosh, I wrote it! I guess I should be in jail now. My parents (who _were_ involved in my entire educational career), my school's administration, etc all let me down by not seeing this as a warning sign and putting me in jail!
What a moronic thing it is to claim that just because someone wrote this down, that they're suddenely moving a step closer to doing it. For all we know he never even thought this before being asked to write the story.
BTW, I _would_ let Stephen King babysit for me (fo course I need to have some kids first..:) ).. from everything I've seen he's actually a really nice guy.. just has one hell of a wacky imagination. If I'm not mistaken, he's a father himself too.
I had him for two semesters of classes at SDSU... never knowing he was an author. I'd already formed a high opinion of him from his teachings.
Then I found out he was an SF author, got FUtD this summer, loved it and just started "A Deepness..." two days ago.
His use/spoof of the net in FUtD was great. It really showed how the growing dependence on networking in the world today might look in the future, but on a more galactic scale.
The Media just doesn't know it, because, well, watching a bunch of geeks slurping Mountain Dew and poring over man pages is *boring*.;]
Speaking of Mt.Dew... I'd love to seem them do a realistic commercial some day. Show the real demographic that they sell to: A bunch of geeks coding, playing games, etc.
As if Sk8r d00dz and Busta-Rhymes are their real market... yeah, right!
Then the prices skyrocketed, and I'm paying almost $1.20/gallon nowadays.
Sheesh.. Gas prices in San Diego have been well above $1.20 for regular unleaded for years now. It's about $1.30 now, and that's the lowest it's been for awhile.
I'm 26 now, and I don't think I've paid less than a $1/gal for gas for about 8 or 9 years... in San Diego anyway. We get screwed here. Whenever I travel to places for work or vacation I get to see that _everywhere_ else is cheaper.... ARGH!
IMO, the biggest tragedy of the Challenger disaster was how far behind the US space program has been since it occured. People almost seemed shocked that spaceflight was dangerous... hello?
I think those that died would've wanted the program to continue (fixing the problem obviously) but would not have wanted the program to fall so far behind. I think they would've been better honored by not only getting caught back up on the schedule, but perhaps learning lessons and moving ahead even faster.
It also cracks me up when people say we've wasted so much on the space program without getting anything in return. They have no idea how many advancements in computers, medicine, science, etc we owe to the space program(s).
>I'm sure he will be portrayed as a tough talking > no-nonsense type of person.
Uh, have you even seen any commercials for it? I've seen ones that have shown Jobs going off on employees as well as Gates whining/screaming.. etc. Definately not glossing it over the whole time.
Yep... I think I was the only one in the theater where I saw it who not only has seen the Flint films... but knew that the joke was a reference to reality and not something made up.
Considering how much you paid attention to the file (it was Mustafa that fell over the cliff).. I don't give your comments much weight.
Yes, I saw the film.. yes, a lot of it was recycled.. and yes, I thought it was funnier than hell. I mean what were you expecting?!? AP movies are "turn off your brain and just enjoy the ride" types of movies.. stop analyzing them.
The line where they looked into the camera (AP and Basil Exposition) and basically said "forget the plot holes and just enjoy yourself," had me cracking up... they admitted that rather than try to make the picture fit perfectly with the first, they just decided to have fun.
BTW, the falling over the cliff thing.. he (Mustafa) even asked Austin if he remembered him, then said what his name was. Were you sleeping?
>I personally don't have enough familiarity with >the Alpha, PPC, Sparc, etc., ports of Linux to >say anything about them myself.
Been running a RH-based Sparc 20 for over a year now (no not constant uptime). It's at _least_ as stable as any PC I've seen if not more so. Only shortcommings: sounds not quite there.. but I don't use it so I don't care.
The only panic in the entire year: An abortive attempt to upgrade the RH5.2/sparc dist to the 2.2 kernel (right after 2.2 came out)... had to do with the fact that I didn't pay attention to the docs when it talked about the new serial port stuff and I use a serial console on this box.
If anyone's wondering, I use the box mainly as a ppp-over-ssh gateway into work from home (doing things like rsync'ing my homedirectory and software packages back and forth) and also as a sentry box (running Abacus sentry looking for any user shenanegans...). Sentry still seems to detect a lot more when run under Linux compared to running under Solaris.
Hmm.. "Immedia products solve this problem by including a wireless pager and Internet software so the retailer can remotely change messages in seconds, whether in a single store or across the entire retail chain."
Ok, so how long until someone figures out how to override the "wireless pager" system and send it signals so that the ads are all replaced with porn, or some other message.
An I disagree with this point. Maybe I'm spoiled by living in San Diego (since you can't go a block without running into a small computer store) but if you want to buy a computer, you're going to pay way to much if you go to one of the places you list. There are several smaller dealers in this town with service, prices, and selection that leaves those appliance stores so far behind it's not even funny.
They've all sold quality clone boxes with AMD, Cryix, etc chips for years... long before Compaq even thought of it. Do you think if the small store/clone market hadn't helped the popularity of Intel-alternate CPUs that Compaq would've bothered to sell them at all? People probably wouldn't even know about those other chips.
Which is why when anything happens the site eats it. Several months back when we dropped a few bombs on Iraq (I think it was Iraq) I went to both cnn and msnbc. Sure cnn was really slow to load, but msnbc would just spit out error messages (one of which told me to change a setting on the server, giving me the recommended new value... sure give me access and I'll do it..:). ).
BTW, cnn is running solaris.. according to at least one oneline OS sniffer site.
Note that those two Compaq systems won't even be available until Aug this year.
And how is this different from the security hole in Corel Linux? Hmm, the Linux hole is worse, and it wasn't reported here in the land of "linux is perfect and has no flaws".

(making about 1 Gb/s of bandwidth, about as much as a PC133 SDRAM can churn out).
If that's true that's kinda weak. Sun's UPA pushes well above that. The U2 which has been around for a few years now can do 1.6Gb/s.
Of course the h/w costs a ton more and only runs Solaris, Linux, etc... So I doubt there are any games that use it... yet.
The Media just doesn't know it, because, well, watching a bunch of geeks slurping Mountain Dew and poring over man pages is *boring*. ;]

Yep, power outages and halon dumps sure to raise the excitement level.

And if I'm not mistaken, CDMA is one of (if not the only) cell/pcs/whatever phone tech. in use that has yet to be cracked and/or "wiretapped."
It's supposed to be the most secure when it comes to privacy.

Coburn rocked in those films!
