I had a colleague report that the problem still existed when he tested FC2 (release). I can't confirm it myself, I don't intend to rebuild any of my machines with Nvidia cards using FC2. As far as I'm concerned, Mandrake 10 is a better option for the desktop.
We're actually evaluating it for possible production use in workstations.
Do you have a reference which describes what a technically valid partition table is, how the XP partition table is somehow "technally invalid", or anything else to support your assertions?
Heh. I ask those questions of Debian... I don't take it very seriously as a distribution in its own right, but I do give it credit as a useful starting point for a number of projects. Of course, its been some time since Debian had a big release... perhaps they will take the 2.6 path for the next release whenever their plodding development strategy gets them to it?;)
Asking this question of Sun, who is attempting to get some customers for their product, is even more valid than asking it of Debian. Hell, its even a more valid and important question than asking the OpenBSD folks why they haven't got SMP working yet.
Dark roasts, such as used in espresso, have less caffeine compared to the same bean in a lighter roast. Therefore espresso, bean for bean, has less caffeine than a normal roast, however the technique results in a highly concentrated coffee beverage.
And yes, nobody cares... caffeine is the only thing keeping our society functional, dammit;)
"'m a card-carrying Linux Zealot, and I don't have a problem with it."
Apparently you are actually a closet Rational Linux Advocate. I'm sure there are a few people in the drooling horde reading these comments that will have a problem with someone being foolish enough to actually choose to run Windows on anything;)
I run Gentoo on my laptop, but the specs on the crusty old thing are so low that my only other "choice" would be the run Windows 95, and I'd sooner eat my usb key than do that.
Evidently you weren't paying attention when responding to my comment.
First, comments on inferiority, MS vs Open Source, monopoly vs underdog, etc. There are things that work better in IE than in Mozilla/Fire(something). That being said, I still use Mozilla and Firefox as my primary browsers, and IE only when I absolutely have to (this holds true whether I am using a Windows, Linux, Solaris, or BSD desktop). As far as comments on security, it is easy to point the finger at Microsoft. They are the dominant desktop OS vendor, they are the biggest target, and the most available system for young kiddies to play with virus code they've ganked off USENET. I do security for a living, BTW. Yes, Microsoft has an awful track record... guess what? I watch new vulnerability advisories, exploit advisories, and patch availability notifications come out all day. Some days Microsoft is the worst of the bunch... some days it is the Linux kernel. Some days it happens to be Sun Microsystems dominating the advisories. All code has errors, no programmer is infalable. Given Microsoft's footprint, I am not surprised that they appear to have the worst security record. They may actually do... my point is that, without access to the source, it is impossible for us to tell so it is impossible to make a rational judgement. Furthermore, I have more problems downloading updates for my Linux systems than I do for the few Windows desktops I own.
We must exert choice and hope that others will make an informed choice. Hopefully that will prompt them to give alternatives to Microsoft a try.
As far as "circular logic" goes, and allegations of defining Microsoft as "the best", I did no such thing. I asserted that they were successful. They are, in fact, a successful business. Whether success was achieved through sneaky/dirty tactics or not doesn't really interest me right now. Regarding your note on "chosen platform".... that is the evidence that you weren't paying attention. See previous comment posting from Mozilla running on a Linux workstation, please/thanks.
If it was a matter of conception, you'd think SCO would have been lawslapped back into irrelevance by now. Unless, of course, SCOs problem is in the way they've executed their lawsuits...
Anyways, Lets hope Google can fend off these vultures without much damage done
Not necessarily. Roaches have little selection forces at play, same with humans. Perhaps we're both at an evolutionary dead end?
I think the prime candidates for evolutionary leaps will be the species under great environmental or ecosystem pressure. They have the greatest opportunity for random beneficial traits to become dominant.
I merely insist on some thought being behind statements.
Microsoft grew into a monopoly, through dirty tactics or not, and crushed their competitors. Did they take the high road? No. Did they take the amoral road and achieve success? Absolutely.
What is their software "generally inferior" to? You imply a comparison to something without stating what that comparison is. MacOS? Linux? *BSD? AmigaOS? OS2/Warp? Word Perfect? WinAmp? Or do you mean Halo v. Quake 3?
Less secure than what? Less secure than if we didn't have computers, or than if somebody else was dominant? Prove it. Oh right, you can't. All I know, for a fact, is that Microsoft is the dominant desktop OS vendor, and the spread of desktop computers in the home of the average person (in a developed country) is pretty damn impressive. Computers and Internet access are supposed to be empowering, but all too often we see less empowerment and more random clicking of email attachments.
You make some interesting assumptions... I have taken some time to think about them and comment back using Mozilla running on Linux, via my Microsoft OS-free office desktop.
Ok, I'll bite: GIAIS, a global initiative that gets ISPs, the monolithic desktop OS vendor, and groups like MSN talking about security and working to resolve problems.
And XP SP2, removing broken features and adding security functionality to improve the security of the home end-user.
You can't reason with them. Anti-Microsoft bigotry is as irrational as any other prejudice. It is in vogue to criticize companyies that are very successful at what they do, just as those who excel at FPS games get branded as "Cheater", those who do very well in school are "nerds", and those who aren't afraid to communicate with their bosses are "kiss-asses".
The blatant and awful mistakes that Microsoft makes and the people who can't recognize good behavior from the object of their prejudice all are explained by the Stupid People Theory. Whenever you are trying to figure out why people do what they do, refer to the Theory. Its a really simple Theory, so I won't bother explaining it;)
OMFG TURING WAS GAY? WOW, A GAY MAN ACCOMPLISHED SOMETHING! ORGANIZE A PARADE!
Who cares? Aside from the fact that Turing's sexuality is not ignored, it would be a good thing if it was. Let me guess: if it was something that the mainstream media obsessed about, you'd post comments about how homophobia in mainstream media glosses over Turing's accomplishments in favor of irrelevant discussion of his sexual preferences.
Go read Cryptonomicon if you need to obsess about what everybody's sexuality is.
Using the 2.6 kernel on a system with security as the primary goal isn't wise anyways. Part of having a well-secured system is staying away from the insufficiently audited and tested code, i.e. the new stuff.
Mandrake has been very good about using grsecurity in their secure kernels, and include it within the sets of patches in their kernel source packages. That is one of the things that has always attracted me to Mandrake. Their attention to security is often overlooked amidst all the attention they get for easy of use and "newbie friendly" features.
Perhaps your mailing lists aren't as legit as you seem to think they are?
We all know that the Stupid People Theory means that there will be plenty of false positive complaints from bone-headed users reporting lists they signed up to as spam, but SpamCop is quite reasonable in working through those issues. It is also possible to refuse to accept the SpamCop mediated complaints if the email addresses are obfuscated. Many ISPs refuse such complaints because of this issue.
The language in the appeal notice itself makes the point more clearly. As always, you can't rely on the news media to accurately reflect what is actually happening in a case... other than when Linus calls SCO a bunch of morons. That is pretty damn accurate.
Viruses have been going after fucktards on P2P services for what seems like ages. There are no shortage of fools sitting between chair and keyboard, and never will be. This wasn't news when worm A copies itself to My Shared Shit, and it shouldn't be news now.
Technical support != commerical product. The exchange of money for product is what, as far as I'm concerned, defined that product as "commercial".
As far as the unsupported and un"default" 2.6 kernel in SuSE 9.0, I'd also require the 2.6 kernel to be the default option. Gentoo might violate this, but Mandrake certainly does not. You have to choose LSB compatibility in the Mandrake install to fall back to the 2.4 kernel.
It shouldn't surprise anybody when RIAA labels break out unfriendly business practices. They are not in the business of providing a product for a fair price, as determined by competition. They are in the business of exploiting their monopoly, and behaving as if general economic downturn doesn't have any relevance to the music undustry.
Unfortunately, they will attempt to defer the costs of this practice to the artists which created the need for an industry association. A couple of generations of artists will suffer for the RIAA practices until the market wings back in favor of the consumer. This is the process that the RIAA and CRIA (in Canada) right against. Their existance depends on an unbalanced system.
I think 2.6 with pre-emption compiled into the kernel will be the solution for that you are looking for. You could also strategically re-nice processes as needed...
I don't know how SuSE defines "commercial" or "first", but if other distros are selling copies before SuSE even has released 9.1, then I'd have to say their marketing campaign needs to be revised;)
We're actually evaluating it for possible production use in workstations.

FC2 apparently does some wackyish things with the kernel, such as 4K stacks which breaks nvidia driver compatibility, and VMWare 4.5 breakage.
I've always thought of Darl as more Jar-Jar-esque... "yousa stolen meesa source codes! *trip* *thud*"
Hey, if this lets Half-life 3 come out quicker than Half-life 2, then I for one welcome our new proprietary overlords ;)
RTFM about roasts for fun and profit.
Dark roasts, such as used in espresso, have less caffeine compared to the same bean in a lighter roast. Therefore espresso, bean for bean, has less caffeine than a normal roast, however the technique results in a highly concentrated coffee beverage.

I'm still at a even 1000 MB too. Wahh.

About as geeky as kids in Korea killing each other in Internet Cafes over MMORPGs?

There are two things.

As a note, SuSE, despite their marketing claims, is not the first distribution to go to market with a commercial 2.6 kernel. This Beta is for a product that will offer the 2.6 kernel, however Gentoo is already selling Gentoo 2004.0, and Mandrake is selling copies of Mandrake 10 Community on DVD.
