  1. Game Developers? Look at the Gamasutra on LGP Announces Game Development Project · · Score: 1

The Gamasutra (http://www.gamsutra.com/) is prob the best place to look for posting projects like this (I use it quite often for my game development projects). They have a listing of where game projects can be posted as contractual-based and list if their is no pay, royalities, etc.

Opening posting an announcement like they have to /. is a quick way to get flamed or trolled upon. In fact, there is a new article on Gamasutra about public relations and to do's & don'ts.

  5. Long-Distance Teams on Managing a Global Programming Team? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I run a online game development business (www.murpe.com) where most of my development and support team are found all around the world (England, India, Russia, Japan), so we had to look at a common place for having meetings and discussions. There are times my adminitrative staff cannot connect to our online games (due to firewall restricts on telnet), so using web interfaces was an option we considered.

Since we are primary an linux-run development business, we found that using phpBB's (www.phpBB.com) web board system we could keep things private and moderated, then we also utilized a few web based project management suites (you can find these through freshmeat.net easier) for delegating tasks and having a calender available to everyone for upcoming milestone meetings and what not. Overall, the web boards/suites allow us near real-time interaction for discussing issues and for working on other problems when they arise.

  6. Forget MMORPG! Check out MURPEs! on The Future of MMORPGs · · Score: 1

The art of the MultiUser RolePlay Environment/Entertainment (MURPE) focuses in on the unique role-play perspective, rather than just being a hack-n-slash game like Everquest and most other so-called MMORPGs. MMORPGs will prob hang around for a year or two, but MURPEs are more along the lines of MUDs, which have been around since the late 80's.

  10. US Govt = Two-Faced? on Hackers: Uncle Sam Wants You! · · Score: 2, Interesting

There was an article a few days ago posted here that the Justice Department wants Congress to pass John Ashcroft's proposed 'Anti-Terrorist Act' that would treat hacking as a form of terrorism.

Is it just me or does this sound like a stab in the back to provoke hackers into the open, then after they have done the work the US Govt would like them to do, jail them for breaking this so-called Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA)?

Wasn't there something in the news several months ago about some Chinese hackers there were sentenced to like death for breaking into a bank and stealing money? Although this kid did cause over 1 billion dollars in damages, sentencing a 'script kiddie' to jail/probation and a small fine seems a bit stupid and prob should be re-examined in the future.

But wait! There is almost no profit in the PC game market PERIOD. It's is very difficult to make a profit in this business. Game development is an expensive proposition - especially when it comes to the advanced graphics and gameplay that we all expect today.

Umm, where have you been? It seems the OGDC and the Game Developer magazine would have to disagree with you on this case. Quoted from Game Developer Magazine, August 2001 Issue: Games have become big business. Everyone wants games.

Now I wouldn't say that making games doesnt take alot of money, but to point out the fact that there is no profit in PC game development... your dead wrong.

Ofc the rate shouldnt be too crazy since I know alot of users just want 'one' song and dont want to have to buy the entire CD and have to rip it just to have an mp3 for themselves.
