It's really simple. Either a few prodigy agents get through and carry the entire beurau, or they will be duped time and time again by kiddies with half the skill set of a mitnick (and most of what he did was social engineering!)
If the gov't is too stupid to keep up or farm out, then they deserve to be left behind.
But I guess I can't blame myself for not remembering the title of a lack-luster book...

I still love the diamond age, and think the entire rest of the book completely makes up for it.
Now back to the ending:
No, I didn't "get" the ending. I thought the drummers were mad cool (organic computing... and remember kids, organic means poop!) it was cute everyone had their own quest, the drummers were sacrificing that one chick (I didn't get why or what the "information overload" sacrifice meant) then they saved her, and then...... ?
So if any critical readers out there want to give an interpretation, I'm all ears!
I found neuromancer to be a beautiful zen koan... (but kind of inline with Rush's hemispheres!) Case is just that- a shell of a person denying the flesh for the mind.
And the wintermute-nueromancer connection is the seperate spheres of humanity coming together- best exemplified by the cryptic things it/they say at the end.
Whereas I think I read shockwave rider (not sure of the title, but it had a techie hero, a manage-a-trois love scene, using eels to splice nerves, etc) and it also had the zen unity angle going for it, but it SUCKED.
I seem to recall a time a year or two back when the "in" thing was to have a flash "game" on your website called "PUNCH THE (fill in pop-culture target here)"- wether it was teh Spice girls, or the backstreet boys, or NYSNC* (yeah that's right!). So the current trend of Polititcally charged flash games are a riff on a riff!
Regardless I think this is nothing new. Comedy works best when it takes a spin on reality (as a friend of mine said, its the gradient of a society)- yes its an oversimplification but thats its point. It elicits a view by reducing a topic down to a short soundbyte, forcing the audience to "reconcile" this oversimplification.
It helps that these games are easy to create, much like a one strip cartoon. Since they are quick to make they can remain topical and quickly be "thrown away" a few weeks later.
Sorry yr response got modded down by some maroon, but it just goes to show most moderators not only SUCK, but have no concept of stylistics, which is ALWAYS on topic!
and I see how you would prefer "enpimpin's" over "enPIMPins" or some other silly means of emphasizing the pimp (which must always be emphasisized). Either way, it wasn't until I "heard" myself saying the word that I got it.
Thought technically yr not really contracting nor are you showing possession, but abstractly I think the entire world is possessed by the Pimp. So you can continue using your apostrophe with pride.

The flaw: you set up a false dichotomy. It can be both a poor substitute
and a necessary evil
I think it can only be both in cases where there is an alternative (the all possible worlds case). However given performance criteria, schedules, and the need to build to spec there frequently is no alternative. And a functional yet difficult to understand segment of code is the only option (necessary evil) and there is no substitute. As such, your only hope for future maintainance is commentary. Or a miracle. whichever comes first.
So maybe we are just arguing symantics (wouldn't be the first time!) but I think that "necessary evil" and "poor substitute" are mutually exclusive .
re: shaving- what a great guess! I had assumed you had/have some facial hair. Glad to hear you've shaved! (just a personal thing. I find beards difficult to care for and after I shave them off I am amazed how much better I look without one).

True, at ONE point, the chemicals were tested on animals. So why re-test?! The idea is that I'm not supporting companies that continue to test on animals. It's just a personal thing.
Actually, My wife reads the Paula Begoun series of books,so I know how its gonna react to my skin. Plus, I cut through the advertising bullshit.

Actually, I think its the politicians who count on most people staying home.
They target a few specific groups, make them promises and lather them into a frenzy, and then provide special transportation for their constituents.
The more effort needed, the fewer who show up. And if said politician has targeted at those few who do show up, they win. Then its cigars and whores all around!
actually, due to the reduced weight (comparing a scooter to a typical car) your power needs are a lot smaller so it should be more effective.
AND, if you can retro-fit a schnazzy Vespa then you can be more enviro-friendly and stylish at the same time!
One thing I forgot in my parent post- while making a difference in your life step by step, you can also teach the knowledge you get from your experiences to others. Maybe a webpage on turning green... By providing a resource that makes it easier for others you help propagate even more change.
Hmmm... didn't know about the neuter form in English... and it seems neither does 51% of the population... go figure.
When you say clear code, what if it is hard to read, but executes fast and clean?
If I'm writing a communications device driver for Air Traffic control I think the emphasis is on tightly bounded latency. And if I have to use pointers to pointers to function pointers for the speed, then so be it. And if I have my own stack switching algorithm to give the illusion of having a multi-threaded kernel process and I write it in assembly there is no way to make that clear for everyone to read.
Call your friendly neighborhood recycling place and ask. Ask what they do. Ask who they deliver to. Then ask them. And Ask and ask and ask.
If need be, try to visit the facilities. If you can't get a straight answer out of them they might be blowing you off cuz they don't care or they might be doing the wrong thing. Find out what your state, county, and city laws are regarding recycling. Follow up, make phone calls, and ask questions.
If you care, you make the extra effort. If you don't, you stick it in ebay.
Fine, you feel bad. So what are you gonna do about it? Short term? Long term? Short term- you could buy your food from local farmers markets and buy organic in supermarkets.
(remember: Organic means poop!)
Don't buy soaps and shampoos from companies that test on animals (you can get a list from peta.com- my wife does this and you can still buy producst from Target... just not all of 'em.)
Don't buy products from companies who "pollute" the environment.
For the mid term- the next car you buy should be a hybrid. Get in touch with people who have gone completely off the grid (hydro, wind, solar, etc.) and see how they made the transition. Marry someone who can sew and make your own clothes. (or do it yrself!)
Make a plan, and DO IT. Its gonna cost you more money, its gonna take up more time and effort to do what everyone else does; but no one said character building was easy.
If you can dream it, you can do it. If you whine about it, you'll get the smack-down you deserve. If you do it and whine about it, then yr just like me!;)

You do if you expect to handle a severe slashdotting!*
*Yes, I know handling a good slashdotting has nothing to do with power supplies. It has to do with how much video ram you have. And I've got lots.
