OK, so I finally went back to see your response about A.B.D.D.D.D. Then I glanced at your email address and see that, not only did I recognize some random handle from USENET I'd last seen six or seven years ago, but that we both live in Gainesville.

God damn, the Internet is weird.

  3. Attacked at work, Attacker traced to California on DDoS Attacks Traced to UCSB, Stanford · · Score: 1
We were hacked at work early this morning. We run RedHat 6.1, and the attacker used the PAM exploit to create a root account for himself. He downloaded and compiled programs from port scanning and for coordinating DoS attacks.

Fortunately our network admin was logged into the server at the time, so he watched the situation before pulling the plug on the machine. We investigated the logs this morning. We determined that he was coming from New York through a jump from a California IP, so he could definitely be a part of what's been going down.

The account he created for himself was "TEK". Does anyone know of a cracker group that uses that name or initials?

Here's the joke explanation for our not-so-bright moderators: Seti@home sends fragments of the data they've collected to the clients for processing. The clients are looking for signals in these PIECES of data. This combines with the play on "We come in PEACE".

Idiot moderators are even more annoying than the J. Random Trolls. SOMEBODY fix the score on the above post.

Yes, I do feel sorry for the people that chose to live a reasonable distance from shore but still lost life and property due to the severity of the storms. However, because the callous and cynical person I am, I feel *NO* sympathy for the fools that live in the waterfront condos and don't try evacuating until a minute before the gale-force winds hit.

All of shorefront South Florida deserves one big Darwin Award.

And, no, moderators, this is not flamebait. This is a rant against the $18-30 billion dollar damages that could have been significantlly reduced if people realized that they didn't need to rape every single square inch of Florida.

  16. As someone who knows Romero... on Ion Storm has Financial and Personnel difficulties · · Score: 1

...I'm not *at all* surprised. John predicted this when Romero announced his plans, and we all agreed. Look at Quake: it took a long time to come out, and really wasn't a spectacular improvement.

Why? Romero spent so much time "play testing" and not enough time actually coding. He thinks his a coding god on the same level as John or Michael, but he just isn't. And he's too egotistical to admit, or at least _see_, when he's taken on too much. Romero leaving id was a great boon for Q2. And QA is coming along quite nicely without Mr. Romero's "expertise".

And, so, Ion's product is going down in flames. Wow, John was *right*? I'm amazed...really...

  17. Delphi on Gnome Canvas improves graphics. · · Score: 1

Delphi is good. I'm the lead programmer at Gleim Publications, Inc. (www.gleim.com), and we've been using Delphi (1, 3, and I've been playing around with 4) for our Windows software. It's a great tool for Windows programming, because it takes so much of the overhead out of the picture, while still allowing you to directly access the API when you need. And damn, does it ever compile quickly.

BUT, Object Pascal isn't that great of a language. I have run into the languages limits, but I've been able to work around them. However, there are better lanuages, mainly Java and C. C++ is nice, but it appeals mainly to the esoteric nature of hackers. As a language, it's got some problems. So, I'm happy working as a Delphi programmer.
Now, if only there was a Linux/X11 version, I'd be in heaven.

Fear & Loathing was by far the best movie to come on in 98. Gilliam captured perfectly the life behind Hunter S. Thompson's masterpiece. It's a very existentialist parallel to Dante's Inferno.

And B5, of course, is one of the greatest television programs ever. Plot and character instead of incorrect or inane technobabble? Amazing!
