I don't see why you're complaining. Compared to much of the other stuff that gets posted on slashdot lately, this is at least, as you point out, IT related. Seems comparatively relevant to me.

Yes, and many companies, even seemingly modern engineering companies, have mandatory uniforms - especially for women. And that usually includes a skirt.

Even if you were right, you're talking about society and not species. Maybe encouraging "the stupid, lazy, and generally incompetent" is not good for our society, but the individuals who take advantage of the system and produce the most offspring are the successful ones as far as the evolution of our species goes. I think evolution is still going strong.

Does the technology used to deliver a message matter to you? As long as it gets delivered...

The different modes of addressing the message (phone number vs email-ish address) makes some difference tho, since you can give out your address to more people than you might want to give your phone number to (it's easier to change). When using phone numbers you don't have to ask (new) friends for both the number and the address tho...

I live in Japan now, and I do eat whale every once in a while. I prefer it raw though, as sashimi. Good parts can be extraordinarily delicious.

And I come from a country that frowns upon whale hunting. Personally I don't care much.

  8. Hu Jintao on Gates, Jobs, Torvalds: Who is Most Important? · · Score: 1

I have to agree with you on Hu Jintao.

My first reaction when I read his name was "Yikes! I thought this was nerds-only" (I am not aware of his being a nerd, even though he has a degree in engineering...) and my second thought was "Why the heck is he that low on the list?"

When reading their motivation, I was even further surprised that he has actually FALLEN (from no. 4 to no. 41), which is weird considering he has gotten more hold of the power now that Deng Xiaoping has given over his last formal position as Chief of the Central Military Commision to Hu.

Really, as practically the first person in history to get that much power in the world's most populous nation without use of (superfluous) force is quite a feat. We can probably imagine what would happen to the IT industry if China unleashed a war over Taiwan, you know... or decided to shut down some of its Special Economic Zones... No soup for you.

(Besides being an engineering nerd myself I am also a student of East Asian culture)
