With Northpoint and Rhythms going under and Covad on the brink there isn't much left to choose from for xDSL.
That's what happens when you compete against the phone companies. The phone company should lay the line and not provide the service, then you wouldn't be directly competing against your provider.
With all the spam I've received on it, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. I hope that no one will buy this sucker due to the crap these loons are trying to pull.
My company is converting a local school district to linux.
The project consists of several stages.
1. Web/Email/DNS
2. Firewall/NAT/DHCP for main connection
3. NAT/DHCP for each campus
4. Samba/PDC server at central office
5. Slave Samba/PDC servers at each location
They are saving a ton of money as they won't have to renew their novell license.
Then we're going to set up each campus with long range wireless if it's possible. We still have to check all the distances, etc.
I couldn't do it. I earned a whole lot more respect for people in school after I made it about 90 hours towards a Comp Sci. degree at University of Missouri@St. Louis and started bombing. I went back a couple years later and got some A's and B's and then the next semester I bombed again and said screw it (plus I was broke!). I want to know how to learn to program better not how to do differential equations. (I started in MIS because I didn't want to do math, but I hated accounting/economics even more than the math!)
So just keep in mind that if nothing else, you have earned that dang degree and not everyone has the oppourtunity or willpower to make it through school.
Honestly though, think of computer science as your backup. Go find something that interests you and make a contribution to that area with your computer knowledge.
The actual post wasn't, but someone gave me a new link (http://www.compgeeks.com) that I didn't have before and they have some great deals. I just saved about $40 on parts!
Sometimes, the main post itself isn't half as useful as the posts from the/. community.
If only these would have been released under some opensource license. These plugins could have been implemented in the next version of SuSE/Redhat/Debian/name your dist. and would have really bridged a gap for getting windows users comfortable with using linux on the desktop.
That is really funny.
I wish I would have thought of it 6 months ago when my servers were in Savvis' datacenter.
I could have mounted a webcam in the box and waited until someone was looking at the box after they figured out which one it was and then do voice over ip with netmeeting or some equivalent and yell, "DON'T TOUCH ME OR I'LL SWALLOW YOUR SOUL!"
The only purposes I can see are these...
1. International companies can now add more seperation to their domain names. For instance, sony.com.us vs. sony.com.jp.
2. Cybersquatters can now go and grab domains like microsoft.com.us and send out porn spam trying to fool the clueless into clicking on the link.
Am I missing something?
I really don't see any great advantage to them releasing.us, if they're going to do.us, they should let us use.'anything'
What if it's a 16x burner...
I guess if they make it burn slow enough for USB to keep up. I don't think USB 1.0 can keep up with 16x burn speeds can it?
Call me impatient, but when I burn CDs I don't want to wait. 4x doesn't cut it. Granted, when I'm burning I'm usually not making audio cds that might be worth listening but instead I'm backing up data from a webserver. Maybe I'd be more patient if it were something fun like audio cds.
Do you guys think USB is too slow for stuff like this? I know USB 2.0 is quicker but I assume this is using USB 1.0.
It seems like devices like this would benefit a ton from firewire. USB 1.0 works great for mice and printers and other low bandwidth devices but in my experiences, it seems too slow for transferring large amounts of data.
That being said, I have noticed that my Sony PIII 650 MHz laptop running WinME is quicker than my Athlon at 550 MHz running Win2k, so maybe chipset or OS has more to do with it than anything.
Is everything on the DVD?

I've been buying SuSE since they released 7.0. Each time I get a DVD (Or did 7.0 have one? 7.1 and 7.2 definately did.) but I've never used it because I just don't think about it.
Is it simply all the CDs on one disk or is there more on the DVD as well?
Were there benchmarks for Nvidia cards under the same circumstances?
It's quite possible that rendering the different letters could account for the different frame rates. I'd be surprised if it were 15% but I think that if Nvidia dropped as well with the modified text, then that would show that the text simply took longer to render.
I just ordered an audigy yesterday.
Hopefully Creative labs will support this product better. Actually, I don't even need support, I just need the card not to go bad for 2-3 years.
Has anyone else had a high failure rate with CL cards?
It was literally in the shop for two years out of best buy's 4 year warranty.
Neither cannon or best buy would replace it. I didn't buy anything from best buy for several years. I would have banned them for life but sometimes they have good deals. I'll never purchase their extended warranty again, that's for sure.
The technology is awesome, the business plans suck.

We dropped our Broadband and switched to T1.

That single drive could hold... everything!
Let's all pitch in and buy a big fat bandwidth pipe and fancy hardware interface and an array of these drives and we can store everything we want.

Oh well, it's still cool news.
I was hoping to hear Weird Al Yankovic's "I think I'm a clone now" song as the background instead of the typical Star Wars type music.
Call Savvis (www.savvis.net) and see what sort of pricing you can get.
Or email Alejandro.Cardemil@savvis.net and tell him Matt with ThoughtProcess sent you and he can hook you up.
Savvis set us up with a Lucent router. We opted to have the firewall on their end of the connection so that attacks never even go across the line.
The thing is rolid solid reliable. I don't think we've had downtime since we've had it. It's almost been a year.
Most importantly, savvis' tech support is second to none. You can always call and get a live person and that person will know his stuff.
That is really funny.

My DNS servers are ready, how about yours?
Gateway Electronics has some decently cool kits.
As well as nearly any electronic part you might need.
I believe they also have online ordering.

I thought netscape said they weren't releasing anymore browsers after they released 6.0 and it sucked?
Did anyone else read this at the time? I hate developing for Netscape. Give me Opera, Konquerer or IE, but please kill netscape!!!
Hit Bridge.com in Netscape 4.7x and then hit it in any 6.x netscape... What happened?
That's an awesome interview!
I bet working on the set of TNG would be awesome just to see the actors making bloopers.
The picture of Michael Dorn pointing and laughing while dressed up as Worf made me chuckle.

The next best card to a creative labs was probably the Diamond MX300 but Diamond is gone and the support for the card is terrible.
I read a recent review on Tom's Hardware and they had some suggestions but none of them compared in price to the low end audigy it seemed.
I'm not sure Turtle Beach will be in business much longer and it was phillips first try at a sound card so that seemed risky.
Hercules has quality products but their price just isn't as cheap as CL.
Any others that are worth considering?
As far as the meta searches on "which pages link to mine?"
Go to google. Type in a URL and then there should be a link that says, find pages that link to url.

They charge you for tech support. It's tough to find phone numbers.
I found a serious bug in their software and they tried to charge me so I could tell them about it.
I'll never buy one of their products again.
