Don't listen to those Apple fan-boys and their precious frameworks. PHP is very suitable for students, quite similar to and compatible with the teaching transition to C++.
I am currently enrolled in an Introduction to C++ Programming class. I'm acing the class. Most of the students have no idea what they are copy and pasting and ask many stupid questions on our discussion forum.
I think the biggest hurdle you're going to face is keeping the students interest at this level. They don't care to understand the statements if it doesn't connect to their cell phone or MySpace.
There isn't really a good way around that. My instructor sets minimal expectations for lab assignments and keeps the "rewards" coming in the form of 1000-point grade scale. I think his online discussion forum is probably his best asset in assisting the students. He gives great lectures, but everyone just does the labs and goofs those off.
I think your analogy is flawed. This isn't about contracts or access or even the word "unlimited." It's about the evolution of technology. It's really not too much to ask to use 6mbits continuously every second out of the month. I don't know about you, but I haven't had one single "truck roll" on my behalf in the 8 years I've subscribed to broadband. Where is my $60/mo going? I'm using equipment paid for hundreds if not thousands of times over. I'm seeing the effects of at least 4 solutions to a problem that has nothing to do with me.
Comcast will never drive itself out of business. All they need to do is offer another 6 month promotion at a cheap rate and they'll gain back their base like dogs sniffing butts.
Standard management practice of dumbing it down to place the recipient in the learning mode. What he's basically saying is, Comcast only cares to deliver content in quick bursts because the average customer only cares about how fast a page loads. Customers have no idea about the proccessing speeds of their computers and buy what fits their budgets. In the Bush economy, it's not a great computer. The only thing we've learned here is that if we slow the traffic down ourselves, Comcast won't slow it down for us. I'm pretty sure I already knew that.
The problem is, to Comcast there is only one queue. They don't take into consideration the usage of where you live. To them, you may as well live in a Comcast only town where everyone stays at home all day and downloads porn.
I love how Comcast has multiple solutions to a single problem. I love how Comcast words their statements. I love how they treat customers who subscribe to only one of their services. Then again, I loved my ex-wife for a long time, too.
I think you hit the nail on the head. It's not just the loading of the banner ads, but the processor usage they consume these days. Almost everybody I know is too cheap to buy a good computer. They've got the anti-virus and all that spy ware protection loaded. Lord knows we can't have any spies!
Every area covered by cable is also covered by DSL and satellite.
Yeah, right, and if I work hard enough I can become the next Oprah or Donald Trump. What were you smoking when you wrote that? Do you know how much it hurts to pay Comcast a single cent?
Enough people do this and they won't dare try that crap.
Again, more pot smoking. They don't give a fuck about how many customers they've lost. New customers come along every day. The goal is to provide speedy service. The less customers actually using the service, the better.
The only way we're going to make an impact is if investors start selling their shares. Companies handle investors very well, a smear campaign is in order.
For example, did you see how the new limit was equivalent to "50 million e-mails" in Comcast terms? When was the last time you saw a 1/2 kilobyte e-mail? Aren't e-mails mostly spam? On the flip side, why don't we tell customers their usage counter is increasing while they're asleep, on vacation, or not even using the computer?
for instance. The minute Starbucks stock stopped earning gobs of money, the greedy investors got cold feet and ditched their shares. What we need to do to battle Comcast is not to go through the FCC, but to scare the investors. We know we can't convince subscribers to give up the service, so we should hit them in the ball sack.
I keep my fingers crossed and pray to God, asking him to tell me where the error in my code is. It works 100% of the time. (You deserve this response for answering such a silly question, get back to work!)

I notice there are a lot of republicans on Slashdot.

Why are we relating Net Neutrality to the current condition in the states (corporate greed) then saying it's not about capacity?
I got to knock you down a peg for stealing the tag-line to the infamous "FREE CANDY" van.
I for one will no longer tolerate Ben & Jerry's lack of sympathy for today's modern cow! It's human breast milk or bust for me.
Ahhh, so only during peak time, ehy? Where have I heard that before?

Bullshit. Don't subscribe to Comcast Business. Either laebshade is lying, or he lives in a highly competitive market.

It's a lie. That's why I love hearing surveys based on nothing other than a pencil mark.
I have sex with two new women every day.
This is by far the lamest thing I've read at Slashdot. I'm starting to wonder if this site is worth my time.
