    Of course it is. It's also completly tangental to the point of the post. And to the point of the thread. If the instructor choses a book that costs a fortune that's not that the information doesn't want to be free, it's that the instructor things that a book that costs $100+ covers the material best. I'm still not seing a problem here, the actual representation of the ideas costs money, it costs money to create, to print, and to distribute, and of course the publisher wants to make money, however if you want to LERN material there is plenty out there that is readily available.

    You're free to write your own physics book as long as you don't copy the one you read verbatim. Or Mathmatics. Just because the information is free (You aren't restricted in how you can use it) doesn't mean it's without cost. There are costs to the printing and distobution of the colege texts. Now if you go to the MIT open courseware website you can get much of the information in many college textbooks gratis as well because production and distrobution costs are greatly reduced by the internet. If the professor at the college you chose to attend insists that you use a particular book that's one thing, however the information itself is available, and in usable ways for free in many places.

    Um You've never heard of a Mac? what rock have you been living under, yes a newbie can understand enough about one to make it work. In fact a Mac is only dificult to use if you've used another operating system and are used to thinking in terms of how a computer works. Then they become very dificult to use. As far as Gem is concerned I'd say RTFA but that of course would go against slashdotness

    I was off on a tangent. I have had VERY bad experiances with things going out of control with Paradox. This has probably soured me against a product that's not truly the spawn of satan.

    As a rightist Unix-head I have to say that not even I agree with everything GW is doing, but I fully suport the return to the moon, and the conquest of Mars. I also think that NASA should push on full speed ahead at these projectes EVEN IF WE LOSE ASTRONAUTS. I mean, we lose people at every other feild of human endevor, and more people have been lost exploring things on earth than have even gone into space, so stop being so casualty sensitive and get the job done. Jesus said the meek will inherit the earth, the strong should take this to heart and conquer the stars.

    OF course they act as a bunch of ideogogs, they are appointed because they meet a certain ideology, however the current court is strict constructionist, and so are most appelate courts. Conservitives feel more comfortable with strict constructionists in the court, even if the court overturns their laws, because it ensures that generaly more conservitive pricipiles holds sway. The US supreme court has historicaly been hard to buy, and generaly DOES go with a strict construction point of view. Remeber that the supreme court is apponted for life, and are the 9 most powerful people in the country. Generaly the court is more interesting in power than in money, After all, as Adolphus Bush said "No matter how rich you are you can only drink about 40 glasses of beer a day" meaning that past a certain point, money is just a way to keep score. Smart presidents don't apoint bribable justices.

    Exactly, the law is unconstitutional, therefor the law is illegal, therefore if you stick by your guns and apeal the damned decision, you get off. well, assuming you have a halfway competent lawyer.

    But it's not circimvimventing the copy protections scheme, the disk is still copy protected. it's simple fair use. The courts would very hard pressed to state that this truly is illegal. Especialy since the program existed long before the law it suposedly breaks.

    Car - Deductable over 3 years. Computers - Deductable over 3 years. Clothes - Deductable up to 50% of retail every year. Fuel, Car ins, repairs etc - Deductable 100% every year. House - Interest is Deductable.
    Um, the car is deductable over not less than 5 years, and then only if it's a business car, the computer is only deductable it if is used for a business, and then 3 years for a desktop, 5+ for a server. Car repairs again, only for vehicles owned by a business, or for the expenses related to one's employment. The only item that is as is how you said it is the interest on a home. So, basicaly if you go by your formuala without considering how much is for business use and personal use, you'll wind up in a federal "pound me in the ass" Maximum Security prison. If the judge thinks you did it because you're just a dumbass instead of actively trying to cheat the government he MIGHT send you to a federal minimum security prison instead. Generaly speaking not worth the return.

    If you read the writings of Thomas Jefferson this is exactly what he intended. That the central government never have an army more powerfull than an armed populace. over the years this has been warn away more than anything than by the fact that the government hasn't been overly onerous. However the original intent of the second ammendment was that it be used to both defend the country against invaders, but also as the soldiers oath states "defend her against ALL enemies, foreign and domsetic" this includes her own government if it becomes an enemy to the ideals layed down in the constitution.

    The wording of the second ammendment is unclear of whether the militia clause is a preamble or modifies the "shall not be infriged" part. apparently your the grandparent of this post believes it does not. The second ammendment grants the rights to CITIZENS.

    The works are in the public domain, the argument is over the use of the "Project Gutenberg" name. It's 100% legal for me to grab a PG book, and publish it under my own publishing company for profit, it's not legal to use the name "Project Gutenberg Press" or some such derivitve for the name of my publishing company that does that though, unless I get permission from PG.

    I say it, I can't install software on my computer at work. I understand the restriction, and consider it to be a good idea. besides, what do I need to install software here for when I can just telnet or ssh into my box at home, where I have everything I could ever desire running?

    Dude, wake up and smell the coffee. A lot of spam generating software already runs on linux. As does a lot of porongrapic websites, why would you use windows for a server?
