I never got these comments. Yes Apple is good at marketing, but Microsoft forces things down your throat? Really? To force things down your throat means to do things to have one company do things to ONESELF without being asked. Microsoft has not done that EVER, because it would be illegal. If you don't like Windows, buy a Mac. If you don't like XBox buy a Wii, or PS3. If you buy a PC and don't want Windows take your money elsewhere since there are PC's where you can buy barebones. And the list goes on...
I could agree that Microsoft does things that you don't like, Zune is doomed, and that you find Microsoft a monopolist. Those would be valid comments. Though there might be people who would disagree with you.
I don't have a complete command of Swedish... I looked at some of the Swedish sites and the costs. And yes I still stand by saying sending SMS messages are cheapest:
Let's say that you send 300 SMS messages. At TeliaSoner I looked at it was 0.69 SEK, which would be a grand total 180 SEK. Now let's say you wanted to talk that time. The price again is about 0.69 SEK, which means for a typical month the teenager has 10 minutes to talk to their friends. No teenager talks 10 minutes. Yet 10 SMS messages is pretty reasonable. I would closer guess that teenagers would talk about an hour, implying 1800 minutes or 1800 SEK. And if my Swedish is correct then it means I could get a subscription for 599 SEK per month and talk for free.

Real Reason Kids Use Text Messaging...

Kids Say Email is Dead

· Score: 2, Insightful
Yes youth use text messaging... But there is another reason... A more realistic reason... COST...
Talking on the phone is expensive. Sending messages is cheap. Do you REALLY think that kids prefer sending messages to talking? "Why when I was young" kids were talking hours and hours on the phone. WHY? Because local calls were FREE... If kids had the option to talking or sending messages via a keyboard, they would have talked, not text messaged...
>>Canada's lighter immigration restrictions apparently allow them to have more of the best people that they can find (overseas), but still have them 'close to home'.
This is why the immigration debate is so screwed in America. Canada's immigration system is not lighter. Canada's immigration system is hard, but if you have the skills you can immigrate! There is a big difference between what America does, and what Canada does. Yet people seem to confuse the issues.
What America has done and this is the dangerous part. They have clamped down hard on skilled labor, while letting in everybody else legally and illegally. So until folks in America start understanding what immigration means it will mean more and more companies will setup up shop elsewhere.
I think another point needs to be raised. Let's say you don't need to remember Aunt Trudie's birthday because we have tech. What are you going to replace Aunt Trudie's birthday with? It seems an episode of Married with Children and how it relates to true life. I don't think that we can call that progress, actually I would call that regression.
If Einstein did not remember his telephone number fair so be it. Yet Einstein also probably was not thinking about Married with Children. He was thinking about other things related to physics, etc. Maybe if the youngsters of these days decided to focus on replacing their brain with something more useful than Paris Hilton or Married with Children episodes, then maybe America would not need to import so many damm specialists with skilled labor...
You hit it right on the head here. It is amazing a movie that typically costs X million to produce costs about as much as a CD. Somewhere, somebody is not understanding the economics of this. I personally have a huge DVD collection and do watch films multiple times. And I even buy TV Series on DVD, especially since many series missing one or two episodes on TV means you loose a thread. And the last reason why I buy DVD's is because burning or copying a DVD takes AGES! To get a similar quality you have a huge honken file.
Principles of Structures Fundamental concepts of mechanics and structures, as related to architectural design, study of loading conditions, forces, moments, systems of forces, conditions of equilibrium for two and three dimensional structures, centre of gravity of loads and areas, bar forces in trusses, simple frame analysis, moment of inertia. Concepts of simple stress and strain; shear and bending moments in simple beams; shear and moment diagrams, qualitative deflected shapes, flexural and shearing stresses, deflection calculations; compression members; Euler's formula.
Architects know how to calculate whether or not a bridge will mostly stand. Architects have to know the essential calculations because otherwise architects would not be allowed to design houses. Where an engineer is needed is when the building in question requires the signature of an engineer. For example sky-scrapers require the signature of an engineer because the calculations are quite a bit more complex and require more math. Yet an architect could calculate whether or not the sky-scraper would stand mostly...
Dude what's your problem? Did I say Americans were selfish? Did I say say that American's were bad? NO, I said "American immigration system"
Did I say that other countries did not take in refugees? BTW This is exactly the boneheadedness that I see with some Americans. Have you bothered to look at the stats in other countries? Did you happen to know that Europe takes in huge numbers of African, and former Yugoslavian refugees?
But this is a p****g contest and futile because it avoids YET AGAIN the real problem of immigration and how to deal with it. It is the making of an emotional issue that should be carried out using rational thinking. BTW I am not a Republican, but I thought Bush was doing a good thing with the immigration issue.
LOL... When I read your comment I could not help but smile. I have been an immigrant most of my life and I would have to say the American system is buggered. I have one American friend who says its nuts that a friend of his from the UK who is skilled, pays his taxes, believes in the law and is generally a good citizen had to leave because the H1B and green card process is so buggered. YET, he said the illegals come there by the boat load and they eventually all become citizens. In his view, "that ain't right."
The problem with the American immigration system is that they have their priorities wrong. The American immigration system focuses on those that have family, unskilled or what have you. In contrast Canada favors skilled. Recently there was a study on immigration policies and they said systems like Canada are better for the country in the long run because skilled labor integrates better. Switzerland, Germany, UK, Australia all have skilled labor immigration programs and it works quite well for them.
Though you know I could be cynical about this... If the politicians don't want skilled labor maybe it is because they want to keep the voting population ignorant....;) After all all those skilled labor people from other countries might be liberals....;)
The American immigration policy is buggered up. I know I have gone through many immigration systems in the world. The problem is that the American immigration policy favors unskilled labor. For example in Canada, or Europe if you are skilled you will get an immigration visa, no ands ifs or buts. What Canada, and Europe does not want are unskilled labor.
What immigration visa in the US is geared towards skilled people who can later on start a life in the country? Answer NONE. In Canada, UK, Germany, Switzerland, etc they all give you visas towards citizenship.
And please note that this qualified workers is a problem not only in the US, but EVERYWHERE! I know, my wife who is a manager for a software development team in Switzerland is dealing with the skilled labor shortage EVERYDAY...
Here is where I disagree with you. Did you ever notice that those doing the suicide bomb trips are lower level foot soldiers? When was the last time Osama said, "hey I have an idea I will kill myself and make myself a hero that all will remember?" Answer is never! These leaders are no fools, and they speak the rhetoric for the benefit of the masses. Do you really think that the leaders of Iran want to loose power? Do you really think that the leaders are so convinced of their religion?
Think hard about this. If you commit a suicide bombing you go to heaven and good things happen. So why would these religious leaders hesitate going to heaven? Ooops I know why because maybe they would have to give up POWER! I knew the rhetoric of Iraq was wrong because these dictators want to keep their power! They have no interest in loosing power.
>What you FAIL to understand is that iPhone combines ALL of these features into one sleek package. It doesn't just do wifi as well as the Origami. It doesn't just look better than the Samsung. It doesn't just play my iTMS music. It isn't just the simplest smart phone with the best UI. It doesn't just have ground breaking visual voice messages, or multi touch inteface with no clunky mini-buttons. It does ALL of those things, really well, all packed into a normal sized cell phone package.
You see this is the gotcha! While geeks and such may think that this is what they want, the reality is quite different. People actually want multiple devices. People want best of breed. They might complain and hate having multiple devices, but they want them none the less. The way to go is speciality devices like the Blackberry. The Blackberry does extremely well because it does that one task extremely well (email.) Notebooks do extremely well because notebooks do their single task extremely well. When you try to marry everything into a universal device you are constantly complaining because nothing is ideal.
I can't wait to see how quickly people will drop this device when they start typing longer messages. The iPhone is great read only device. I can't see how it is going to do well in a read-write scenario. Again this is why the Blackberry does SO WELL.
Simplest smart phone? Hmm, from what I read in the reviews it takes six steps to make a phone call. Yeah that's the simplest smart phone!... ROTFL....
This reminds me of a European country that has "chic", coolness, etc. But then when it comes right down to it, namely "where's the Beef", well then ooopss...
Seriously, if the iPhone is ONLY really good on WiFi networks, why the iPhone? If you look at WiFi only, then well sorry folks the Origami or UMPC blows the iPhone out of the water. If we are comparing WiFi then the Origami can do everything and then some, and it is quite portable.
And wanna know something else, get the Samsung phone with the MP3 player and 3G and I have an iPhone killer.... Sorry, but this is a joke...
That was a really good explanation. Putting it into that context, yes there is a place where these practices are done and it is extremely unproductive. Mainland EUROPE! Until the discounters, and still now, there are things that you have to pay more than you should. For example in Germany Books are regulated in this manner. Unless of course you buy an English book, then its a free market. Result? People buy English books, and more German books are translations.
I type on a screen already and let me tell you it sucks. Why? No tactile feedback. What device am I using? Samsung U1 Origami. They have a blackberry type keyboard screen. And it works fine, but it is nowhere near perfect. The problem with a screen keyboard is that you can't miss the target. With keys your fingers are guided to the right key because you adjust in a split second if your finger is to the side of the key. Because there are no keys on a screen your finger can't adjust and you constantly hit the wrong key. Additionally having an onscren keyboard sucks because it takes real estate away.
This is why I will not buy an iPhone. BTW notice how the next generation of Samsung U1 (Ultra) has keyboards to the side of the screen... Hint, hint...
Have you looked at the videos illustrating how safe they are? Or how about the one in the UK where they ran the thing against a wall head on. These things are incredibly safe!
Mercedes has safe cars. I know, I have seen a Mercedes roll on the German autobahn (the guy was doing about 170-190). His Mercedes end up upside down. The guy walked out without being hurt. Ok he was shaken, and he looked like, "I survived that?"
Fair enough, but a home user is going to fork over that much money for the iPhone? I think not! To attract the consumer you need reasonable prices. Remember the first Palm, it was reasonable priced. Remember the iPod it was reasonable priced for what it offered.
But here are the restrictions with the iPhone:
1) You need a data services contract. 2) You need a contract from one supplier. 3) And you need to register yourself with iTunes store.
No wonder Google is interested in this device. This is a profiling dream! You have all information about the person, where they are located and what they happen to be doing electronically...
Give the man a cigar! You just hit the nature of the statistical problem point blank. And this is why I think papers that try to wrap themselves in the security of statistics are misleading decision makers.
No kidding since Taleb (Fooled by Randomness, and Black Swan) has explicitly said it is nearly impossible to predict the outcome due to the Black Swan.
>> Sullivan analyzed all 122 post World War II wars and military interventions in which the United States, the Soviet Union, Russia, China, Britain or France fought a weaker adversary. She examined factors such as the type of objective (on a continuum from brute force to coercive), whether the target was a formal state, guerilla or terrorist group, whether the target had an ally and whether the more powerful nation had an ally.
>> She tested her model and found that it was accurate in 80 percent of conflicts. It predicted a seven percent chance of success for the Soviets in the 1979 to 1988 war in Afghanistan and a 93 percent chance of success for the U.S. in the 1991 Gulf War.
Just from reading the abstract what concerns me is hindsight bias. Hindsight bias is when you build a model, based on some data. Then to test the validity of the model you test the data. You can't do that because the model is based on data that you are trying to test.
To properly test a model you need to use data that is completely out of the blue. For example I would love to have seen her test the model against the American civil war.
Apple computers ARE more expensive. Even for the exact same specs, but the specs I am talking about are mainstream 15.4. I compared an Inspiron 6400 with a Mac Apple 15.4. With 3 year warranty the Apple came in at 4,128 Swiss Francs, and the Dell at 2578 Swiss Francs. Guess which one I am buying... NOTE: For the Dell I added Vista Ultimate since OSX and Ultimate would be similar.
The Apple is way to expensive for what it is worth. Granted on the super high end there might be some price differences, but on mainstream Apple is not even in the mainstream.
Well don't act like a drunken pirate! And if a company is not willing to overlook a simple once in a while drunken pirate situation then you obviously don't want to work for the company. Or if you are more often than not the drunken pirate, well then you have a problem.
I think the bigger problem is that people have to come face to face with hypocrisy. I remember when I was a kid in highschool (late 80's) there were teenagers that would be so nice and honorable to certain people. And then be the biggest bully to other people. People regularly were hypocritical and because there is no tape rolling or picture being snapped people could always talk themselves out of the tough situations. Now those excuses don't cut it anymore because, well there is proof to the contrary. And now the teenager that was so nice in one situation and bully in another has been outed.
