While they beg for money, I cannot influence how they do their business. For example why did they spend so much in something that turned out to be totally bad? I am in specific referencing their experiment in the education market.
So while I do not find their appeal for money bad, it is how they spend it that I find bad.
While you are right partially in the DMCA, it is not with respect to privacy. Privacy exists in Europe and it can be enforced. Example, lack of junk mail and never being interrupted by a phone call that I do not want.
One place where you can get these privacies in North America is Quebec, Canada. Quebec Canada is the only place in North America where Europe will exchange data with. Quebec has passed as strict laws as Europe with respect to privacy and it shows. At our house in Quebec I never get any junk mail, nor do I get interrupted by a phone call at dinner. Vivre, le Quebec!
No I think the reason why the other airlines are on the edge is because they mismanaged their companies. They focused on the wrong things and result they are totally unprofitable....
9/11 may have taken some hits, but not as much as the airlines are whining about...
I have a subscription to BW as well and saw that article. It was interesting and I think Boeing has lost its edge.
Yes people want more direct flights and yes people want more cheaper flights. But there is one thing that Airbus excels at. A pilot for Axxx can fly Axxx. That is the appeal of Airbus. For Boeing you have to have a license for each plane. This means that an airline could buy some smaller Airbus's and the A380 and shift their pilots depending on the demand.
Actually the BWB had lower operating costs and fuel costs than regular planes. I think the reason why Boeing is shelving the project is because they do not have the desire to move forward with a new design. For a beancounter it is too risky.... Na ja...
Here we have an excellent example of somebody doing something because they were not sure about what they were talking about. Hence take the "safe" bet and use Windows.
The problem with the statement she makes is that they would have a lack of drivers if they went cross-platform. So that means they have all the drivers on the i386 platform. Hence right now they are locked into i386. So since they were "locked" they might as well get locked totally and use Windows. Why, because at least it is supported!
To Jill Taylor this logic makes sense. However, to people outside it makes little sense since either route would end up at the same destination. The problem with her logic is that she is associating Linux with cross-platform and failure to do so as a strike against the platform. In other words in her mind Linux 1 Windows 2, when in fact the score is Linux 2 Windows 2.
It is funny when I am on panels and I make these comments on the bad logic within corporations many people take a hissy fit. The reality is that most people decide on funny logic like this.
Ah, interesting. Does your TV have a skart plug? Because mine does. Skart is popular in Europe, but not North America. Does your TV have 16:9 and HDTV capabilities? Because mine does.... Even in North America my TV does. Does your TV have satellite capabilities? Or is it cable only? In Canada where I have a house, satellite is the only possibility. But in Switzerland I only need cable.
The difference is that you will by default check to see if your TV has all the features you want. And those TV's that do not, they will not be bought by you. In other words you are choosing what the features you want because you inform yourself what the features are.
And common features? Come on, the electronic companies are always adding things specific to their systems. Can you say SONY?
The same can occur in a LINUX distro. The user can inform themselves and then make the decisions on their own. But we have to train them to do that.
Just like we need one type of car, one type of TV and one type of VCR.
I find it amazing that people clamor around the concept of one type of LINUX, but yet will buy a specific VCR, Refrigerator, TV, car clothes.
Why is this? Because a specific vendor has said that there should only be one user experience and not multiple. Why did this specific vendor do this? Because otherwise there MIGHT even be competition. And as a result a whole slew of minions argue along and fight into the hands of that specific company.
What we need to do is convince people that there is choice and that people can choose. Just like you can choose a VCR and TV. Interesting, is it not. You will spend hours deciding which TV you should get with the feature set, but spend one minute on the OS....
Because now finally people may get off their butt and think about buying other tools. People have become too complacent about the tools they buy. Not to say that JBuilder is bad. But Eclipse, SlickEdit are really good tools that do things in different ways.
I am looking forward to this because it will open the playing field...
And that is the problem of the music industry. They fear for those artists. The "new rock" artists are a gold mine for the labels.
Think about it. Every six months take somebody who can sing, teach them to dance and appear in front of a bunch of screaming girls / yelling boys. Result? petty cash for the artists, but mucho money for the labels. And then when the artists become "demanding" scrap them and get new artists. Why else would shows on how to become a star become popular? In those castings there are thousands that want to get their 15 minutes of fame.
There are very few "new rock" artists that actually made it long term. Exceptions include George Micheal, Robbie Williams, and few others. But notice once they leave the "new rock" band they become interesting artists.
How many remember "Wake me up before you go-go" and how "gay" George Micheal looked.
Will we ever get past this? I think so because with the rise of Pink, Avril, etc it is starting to tilt back into the artists favour.
BTW I am not moaning because I tune out ads. Now about funding the program. Well that is where the problem is. The funding does provide the returns that the advertiser wants. This is why they are crying. That was the point of my comment.
There is no way around this because we are becoming advertising tuned. We as humans can get used to things and as such have gotten used to advertising. That is not good because advertisers require us to remember them.
Now would TV die? Oh come on! Movies do not die because they receive no advertisements. The problem of TV channels is that they have gotten used to multiple streams of income. And like the RIAA habits like this are hard to kill off. Like most humans it is hard to cut back. It is easier to avoid the cutbacks in the first place. Or at least try...
The point of HotSpots are being missed. Hotspots means that only specific areas will be serviced. Your airport, your home, your coffee shop. It DOES NOT mean being able to travel along the highway. This is why WiFi does so well. It is the ultimate localized area ISP.
The problem with wireless and that is why WiFi does work is because you cannot cover large areas. Airtime is a scarce resource because if 1000 people are pounding a station you will get slow performance. That is part of the 3G problem. If Richocet actually had full scale implementation it would come to a crawl just like 3G. The towers can individually only handle so much performance. Unless of course every tower has a T3 connected to it.
Here WiFi has solved the issue because WiFi is generally not used to connect multiple WiFi's together. Instead WiFi is a wireless connection to a T1 or T3. Therefore none of slowdown due to wireless replication occurs. In other words we have hotspots of highspeed access....
It not has gotten to the point where I actually tune out commercials. I might watch the commercial, but the rentention of the commercial is ZERO.... Now I am even in the habit of doing something else during the commercial, since they take so long. It is really interesting to see.
If I see the commercial again I will remember it, but if not in the context of the commercial I do not even remember it. Does it influence me to buy the product? Absolutely not. In the grocery store or shopping mall I do compartive shopping and ask the store help. At that point I will make a decision. And if I like the product then I will buy it again.
I think the problem with the big cable companies is that advertising in the current model DOES NOT WORK anymore. People get so much advertising that they have taught themselves to tune out...
I was assuming that the notes would be translated to text. And I was assuming that you could search the notes. But if you have any amount of data, searching for the right note is like searching for a needle in the haystack.
The reason why I find this type of search difficult is because most notes are part of a larger group of notes. And if you do a search on this larger group you will get most documents in the group. Result, you do not find your note.... Or at least you need to investigate each note and figure out which one you want. I do the exact same thing with notepads....
I find a tablet PC as a complementary device, not primary. And I find a large chunk of the population would feel the same way. (Otherwise typewrighters would not have beaten hand writing).
When I owned a Newton it was great. The form factor was right, had enough apps and RAM to keep me happy (at the time). And the battery life was fine. Of course the cost was good too.
Do that to the Tablet PC and you have a winner....
Here is where I have the problem. The DOJ settlement was tied to how MS does contracts. And MS is creating contracts that explicitly single out people who would be tempted to move to Linux. Yes notice that it references small companies because probably MS is not legally bound in the settlement.
The new contracts substantially reduce the price of the product. Which in trade terms is called dumping! Dumping is a commonly used by countries to stop undercutting the local market. Some people may have issues with dumping, but the reality is that it undercuts to gain marketshare. If MS was reducing the prices generally then yes, that is the perfect American ideal. But the prices are not reduced across the board.
Now about competition now? Yes just like there USED to be competition in all of the other fields MS jumped into and dominated...
Ok, it covers OEM. But should this not cover other customers?
Now I want to see the judge kick her butt into gear. She said she was going to keep an eye on MS, well now is the time to do that.
But most likely nothing will happen. Which shows yet again, that MS stops at nothing! All you can do is shake your head and wonder what the DOJ needs to actually do something!
Read my lips! MS will only stop these practices when they are broken up or something along those lines. Legally MS does whatever they want...
This is why profiling does not work. The problem with profiling is that it attempts to pigeonhole you into a category. And that may not reflect what you are actually doing.
I give an agent talk and point out what people really want is contextual information at the moment. This is very different from profiling because the contextual information is based on what you want to do and not what you did.
Profiling could be used to predict what you want when you ask for it. For example if you are making a query for children's books then the top 10 could be presented. Or a couple of questions could be asked and then a top 10 is presented. But in either case the background of the user is not taken into account.
If he does that, then I think it is ok to hack into his machines. Since he is doing the same to ours. And since we will hack his machines we should bring them down and make them self destruct....
Sorry but there I think you are absolutely wrong. I happen to be an engineer, not because of an economic barrier, but because I managed to study x years in a University.
And since you are in Ontario, which is where I got my engineering degree you should know that money is not the issue to getting an education.
Also engineering certification does not mean quality. It means that you studied so many years and have gone through specific procedures. Just like police people and fire people. Some police people are good and some are baffoons, but regardless you know that they have gone through police trainning....
When engineers become liable for stuff that they design, people design very DIFFERENTLY. This is not to say that everybody has to be an engineer to work on software. Just like in a custom machinery shop not everybody is an engineer. You just need enough engineers to sign off legally on designs.
Bully is not funny, Quatschkomedieclub is only 25% funny, sieben tage sieben koepfe is NOT funny. Axel is semi-funny. The only person I find funny is Stephan Rabbe and his assistant Elton. Stephan Rabbe brought quite a bit of originality to comedy. With his in-your-face comedy, it is something that would even be funny for North American's or British. The other German comedian's are simply not original. Even the "American" woman who talks German English. SHE IS NOT FUNNY!!! What I also found funny is the short excerpt of the German version of Trigger Happy TV. That guy in that context was not bad. Ok parts of it are from Trigger Happy TV, but he was alright.
The problem with German comedy is that it often tries too hard. It tries to be funny and wastes time trying to setup the comedy. Stephan Rabbe and Elton are succesful because they make simple events interesting. They are smart asses!!!
In the latest case of TV Total Stephan Rabbe tries to make the guy from the sex channel interesting because he gave a stupid answer. That is comedy entertainment. Or his erst waehler check, or even his boxing and speed skating with a woman. Where he went stupid is when he tried to be funny on the Premiere football game with Bully. That was not funny, it was simply stupid.
Elton I find funny because he is so sarcastic and his on the road missions are funny because he does what people do not expect.
Jay Leno is NOT the typical American comedian. If you want REALLY funny get Robin Williams stand-up comedy. Or get some stuff from Lewis Black (he is a fast talking New Yorker), Billy Conly or Eddie Izzard. These people are funny... That is true comedy.
You also have to realize that most good North American and English comedy is not on TV. It is stand up that you either watch live or buy on TV. Once comedians hit TV in the form of a series their comedy is watered down so that the "viewing" public does not get offended.
As a suggestion use Kaaza and search for the people I mentioned and listen to their comedy. If you can buy it. For example Robin Williams recently did an HBO session at Broadway. It is on Kaaza and really funny!!! The only problem a non-English speaker may have is that Robin Williams is a fast speaker.
Exactly...

Ok fair enough, but at 1299 Pounds, why would I want to do this? It really does not seem to be that useful in a bigger picture context.
Had this been a tablet PC at 600 USD, well then that is an entirely different ball game....
You are lucky....
I was assuming that the notes would be translated to text. And I was assuming that you could search the notes. But if you have any amount of data, searching for the right note is like searching for a needle in the haystack.

Not to be cynical here, but if you have "five notebook" full of notes in electronic format, do you still think you can find it?
I use both a notebook and paper notes. And trying to find anything older than 3 months is a pain in the arse...
Here is where I have the problem. The DOJ settlement was tied to how MS does contracts. And MS is creating contracts that explicitly single out people who would be tempted to move to Linux. Yes notice that it references small companies because probably MS is not legally bound in the settlement.

Judge Jackson was right!
How many "dead" bodies in the software industry does the DOJ actually need to do something?
Ok, it covers OEM. But should this not cover other customers?
