What you mentioned is extremely scary. Think about it. The device is a computer program. Well now you have a patent exclusivity on a way of programming. THIS IS BEZERK...
What gets me about this is the convience that the EU is bringing in patents.
Consider the following:
Although this group numerically dominated (90%) the response, the major sectoral bodies representing the information and communication technology industries, as well as many of the Member States, all supported the approach put forward by the discussion paper.
Yeah lets say you asked my Grandmorther if patents are good or not? She would say yes they are good, without understanding the ramifications. Damm convient if you ask me.
This smells like large corporation pressure. And the leaders of the world wonder why there are violent protests throughout the world whenever they get together?
Weight) Ever go to an office, house or whereever with an eighty pound paper weight?
Space) To big to be truly portable skooter is smaller and lighter (even the electric model)
Trust) Do you really trust a machine to balance you? What happens when clutzy folks use this? Me being a totally uncoordinated person. Or how about people who weigh a bit more and runs into a person who weighs a bit less?
Hills) I live in Switzerland which has many many hills. What happens going uphill? Or worse downhill?
The thing is that this gadget has not been tried in with mass public. And VERY OFTEN the results are very different than having a couple people run up and down a couple of little obstacles
This was absolutely clever by the states. I have to wonder why they did not think of it earlier. And the thing is that MS cannot be so restrictive with who sees the sources, etc, etc. Because then it can be considered contempt of court. Man did MS REALLY walk into deep do-do!
What I find amazing is that this judge means business. She has shown no favourites on either side and is following the law. Wow! I guess she was probably a good choice. Ok if this backfires and MS wins maybe I will change my mind. But thus far she is following the law. COOL!!!
That is the core of the problem. If Microsoft was serious about security then they would separate IE from the OS. Separate services so that people can control then individually. But do they do that? No because they want to control the monopoly. So how do they handle security? As was mentioned already a public relations problem!!!
But that is ok since that will be their undoing. And twenty years down the road we will say "Microsoft who?". Just like Unisys, Wang and most likely XEROX. Companies that do not address the real issues die off. IBM learned those lessons!
And that is the point David Brin brings up. Why can I not see information about John Ashcroft, Bill Gates or Laura Bush. If they can see information about me then I sure want to see information about them. It is not a one way street! And it annoys me that these people have a holier than thou attitude!!!!
Last year at an Apache Conference I heard David Brin talk. Really interesting! And then I bought his book at the conference. He has a lot to say and definitely worth the read.
The problems that he outlines are very legit and there is only his solution as a way out. For example he says secrecy laws like in Europe are DUMB. Living in Europe I thought they were good, but he put in further terms.
Data is immortal. Hence with data secrecy laws what ends up happening is some people have power and others do not. And having run conferences and mailing lists that is the exact problem. Once I ok the use of my data I cannot control it. For example lets say I want a mortgage. In Europe I sign a sheet saying yes the bank has the right to look at all of my data. But the question what data will the bank look at? And how will they use that data? The secrecy laws do not address that issue. That is the crux of the problem with or without data secrecy laws. I have no idea how the data is being used.
David Brin argues you can give out all the data you want, but you have control on what is being seen and manipulated.
My favourite part of his book is the following (it starts off with that). We have privacy in public. For example lets say that you go to lunch with people. Do other people listen in on your conversation? No because people mind their own business. The reason is because people can see when you are not minding your own business. And that is the crux of his argument regarding privacy laws. We cannot tell companies or governments to mind their own business!
Sorry, but the "high-end" is not correct. High-end now is defined in 80K USD. While there are some models of Porsche and BMW that fit into there, there are plenty of lower end BMW's. And please consider world-wide prices... (not just in North America)
You started at 50K in Minneapolis MN. The 55 K is for a very experienced programmer in either Toronto, Ottawa or Montreal. Beginner programmers like yourself would earn about 30-35K USD in major hubs.
So when you look at it, Canada is cheaper and hence more attractive to high-tech. My favourite scenario is to find work anywhere but in Canada and then live in Canada. This is possible if you choose your jobs right.
That is exactly it. Globalism is not bad, but corporatism is. And large corporations are bad for our system.
My favourite example is the car industry. "Business Experts" say, car makers need to be big to be competitive. Well lets see, GM (biggest and financially sickest), Ford (Really big as well, and very financially sick) BMW and Porsche (relatively small and incredibly profitable). Yeah I agree with these boneheads who think bigger is better (NOT!).
Look at Japan where large corporations have ruled for eons. Japan is REALLY financially sick and has problems. Look at some of the European countries with large coroporations (Germany, France). They are becoming sick as well. Countries with real venturists, US, UK, Canada, Australia, Spain, USA (partially) there are not major problems.
Corporations are bad for the long term financial health of an economy!!!
It really does not have anything to do with reducing the power of an individual government. What has to do with is empowerment of the people.
I live in Switzerland which is a true democracy. In Switzerland every person has the right to vote yes or no to certain decisions. The government is only there for the details. Sure Swiss vote quite a bit, but the power is with the Swiss people and only the Swiss people. And in that case lobbying has absolutely no effect unless of course the lobbyists decide to give money to each Swiss.
True democracy works and it should be used more often in other countries.
This always goes in a loop. And right now we are in a "crap" music wave where talent in dancing is higher than talent in singing and music.
But as other waves this will pass as well since people will get fed up with it. How come? Because it is a fad. Today on Swiss Music channel I heard the remake of "Saturday Night Fever" and other disco songs. AHHHHHHH.....
Remember the TV show WKRP in Cinncinati? And remember when Johnny Fever became RipTide? Well right now there are tons of RipTides!!! The riptides died and we got real music again. This is a loop that will die! Especially now since the economy is in a slump and people are more picky about their music. Wait, coincidence DISCO died in 82-83, yes that was when there was a major slump in the economy.
I have been to India (did consulting there) and have to say I have nothing to worry about. Sure some work will go to India, but you get what you pay for. I am not knocking the Indian programmers.
Here is the problem. The Indian programmers are not paid that much. Hence they cannot afford to train themselves and are totally reliant on the company. They also have the problem of not being able to buy the hardware that we have.
Result? Programming comes back. Even India now has competition from China. India is becoming too "expensive".
As an example of labour coming back no further than Canada. There are plenty of hightech companies in Canada? Why because labor is CHEAP! A very good programmer in Canada makes about 90K CDN, which translates to about 55K USD. This wage is good in Canada, but buys you very little outside of Canada. But that is what a Canadian programmer makes (hence why many Canadian programmers work in the US).
What does Canada offer? Great education, safe country included healthcare, etc, etc. A country like Canada makes it very hard for India to compete.
Hence my original comment is that jobs will come back, but you have to lower your expectations. BTW the "Indian threat" has been going on for a decade now!!!
I know how you feel since I am in that market (Europe). However there still is work. What you have to be ready to do is drop down in your rates.
Now the rates are about 35 Pounds, which was what I was making about four to five years ago. Still not a bad wage in these days. Ok not amazing, but in comparison to many other jobs still pretty good.
I think what people have to realize again is that the rates have dropped and times are harder. But it will come back. I remember when I started contracting in 93 and it was the same. And before that my friends said the same thing. It is just that plenty of newbies came in and thought they would make tons of money for nothing.
What I am also wondering about is how they dealt with the new VC's. Did they make it easy for the VC's? Did they think about the bigger and better things?
And most importantly where is the other half of the opinion namely the VC's. I am not a friend of "Vulture" capitalists. But VC's do one thing and that is make money. So my question what is their story on why it did not work? We only heard one very biased side.
Yeah that's it, extend the CLR to allow more languages like C++ and Eiffel. And those instructions would allow more flexibility. Oh wait I forgot that is called assembler and it is called a CPU!!!
Seriously folks, when we abstract the CPU for the sake of selling technology things have become very sad...
I do not mean to get flamed by this. And I do not mean to invoke an argument. But here is something that I am boggled about.
On the Open Source site there is the Apple Public License source Agreement. Please look at sections 1.8 and 2.1. It is stated explicitly that the Apple sources cannot be used in a commercial setting. Comparing that to the Microsoft Broad Source license the same is said.
Now why is the Apple Public License considered Open Source and not the Microsoft? I am seriously asked because I am release some Open Source myself and found this aspect boggling.
I am living in St-Adolphe-D'Howard, which is about 10 clics North from St-Saveur, which has DSL!!! And 10 clics South from St-Adele, which also has DSL.
BUT ME IN THE MIDDLE HAS NADA!!!! And that is annoying hence why I am not sympathetic for those that want a free ride. You see I have no ride!!! And until the free riders learn to cough up more money maybe folks like me could ride as well!!!
Sorry for being harsh, but it is really annoying to be able to sniff DSL. Have all my family and friends use DSL or cable and I am stuck on modem.
The problem I have with this is that people assume they know what I want. When in fact they do not. Just because I like Bud does not mean I want to see an ad for Bud. In fact that ad would be lost on me since I am already drinking Bud. What I want to see is variety.
But with this system, when they think they know what I want I do not get to see the variety. Maybe I do want to see Tampon commercial! And the reason why is because I have a wife who definitely needs them.
How often have you seen something and thought, hmmm, that is neat, XXX would love to have that! Well with my viewing habits this simply would cease to exist. And of course I simply do not want people to know what I am watching. None of their business!!! As a example of my randomness, I read the "Bild" (gossip) and Financial Post (serious business newspaper) in the same session!!!
You know what annoys me about this is that MS has "conviently" forgotten the original context. You see what originally happened is that there was a debate on what software to use. This started out tame enough.
BUT then one of the members of parliament made a few comments on how to "decide" the best software. People would have thought, hmm, sounds interesting. UNTIL you figure out what is going on in the background. You see while this member of parliament is working for the state he was actually receiving steady income from a Microsoft solution provider. He said, but I am working for that company 1 day a month. (BTW his income was some absurd amount for 12 days of work)
While the parliament did not understand what was going on the IT industry did. As a result the LINUX community went on the offensive and declared war! (right so!) They had to do something otherwise the members of parliament would make a decision that seemed "democractic" when in fact it was not.
Hence why I am annoyed at this Microsoft Yahoo and his calls for "democracy" and doing everything correctly!!!!
CVS DOES integrate into Visual Studio. Look for the IGLOO plugin. Works like a charm.
I also agree VSS sucks and CVS works better.
What annoys me about all the new Version Control systems like the one being proposed is that they are ignorant of NON POSIX / UNIX systems. I have to work on both LINUX and Windows. And as such need version control on both.
While I agree NOW they will do what they say, in the future who knows. And that is what would have me worried. The problem with data gathering is that data lives on long after the fact. And once it is data it cannot be taken back.
There is absolutely no law (in the US) that deals with how the data can be used. It is only the privacy policy of TiVO that dictates what is done.
Lets take the example of a company like Budweiser saying, "you know I want you to send out the new Budweiser commercial to all those that replayed our commercial". Budweiser then says, "hey to do that we will give you X dollars as compensation for your effort". Will TiVO say no to this? Absolutely not. TiVO is playing nice person now because they need to the data to convince the likes the Budweiser.
So sorry, I would opt out without any legally binding laws or legally binding data expiration laws.
Sorry (speaking as another Canadian) I have to say that I think unlimited for 80 CDN is FINE!!! While you may whine about having to pay 35 CDN, but I pay the same amount to get 56K. You see I am a couple of clicks outside the main range of DSL. And I have been WAITING, WAITING, WAITING... So if the bill goes up to 80 CDN so be it since I would love to whine like you regarding the cost!!! Maybe at 80 CDN the various providers would think about investing so that the REST of Canada can get DSL!
I agree and disagree with this. Sure you may not have been running any servers, but there is fair usage. And when companies plan usage they calculate that specific people use only so much bandwidth. For example our home office uses only about 2-3 gigs per month when using the Internet so-so.
But the moment I start downloading large files my usage rockets up to 6-10 gigs. This is a huge difference and changes the calculation for the company quite a bit.
Ok you are right then the provider should not have said unlimited. In that sense I do like my Swiss DSL provider. They spell out exactly my bandwidth and leave everything at that. Right now I am limited to 6 gigs, which is pretty good. But more importantly what is nice is that I have FULL SPEED always. No humps when everyone goes online. And if I need 2 Mb and 22 Gigs then I simply upgrade. So maybe the North American providers should have clearly spelled out the conditions!!!
Now about not having a "fucking" clue about what Mono is? Excuse me, but how do you know I have no clue? Yes I already have read about the mono and downloaded Mono and played with it. So next time be careful what you write.
But what I would suggest to you is that you read a bit about history. Please name me one company that has gotten anywhere successfully competing with Microsoft Technology? Or a standard based technology championed by Microsoft? Nobody!!!
And here is why. Lets say that.NET makes the standards body and people are interested. So now Mono implements all of the specs. Microsoft decides to add "non-standard" class enhancements. MS knows they are "non-standard" and sells them that way. These enhancements make MS apps look better on Windows. What happens to the non-MS apps? They look not as good and are inferior. This will make MONO inferior. To counteract MONO could bring in their own special hooks. At that point the advantage of MONO is ZIP and I might as well program in Java!
Has the non-propriatary extensions happened already? Absolutely! Ever heard of Java? Microsoft decided to introduce their own C++ to Java bindings. Ever heard of Dynamic HTML? Microsoft DHTML and correct Dynamic HTML were two totally different things. Ever heard of XML or XSL or Javascript? MS has this habit of introducing the latest and greatest with their twists and depending on customer demands will either adapt or not adapt the object model.
Therefore next time you tell me that I have NO CLUE and indicate to me what I should be reading, please read a bit of history yourself. Maybe then you would know a bit better!!!!
Believe it or not too often...
Seriously I actually fall over because I am usually day dreaming somewhere else and hence clue in a bit late.
Yes my instinct is to right myself. But I fear with this device I will right myself at 17 MPH to the floor instead of the usual 1 or 2 MPH
What you mentioned is extremely scary. Think about it. The device is a computer program. Well now you have a patent exclusivity on a way of programming. THIS IS BEZERK...

I serously doubt it will ever be worth it...
The problem is not just cost, but the follows:
Weight) Ever go to an office, house or whereever with an eighty pound paper weight?
