This is nice, but here we see a machine with 256Mb, DVD, intergrated wireless and a real AMD processer. Seems that the argument that Windows makes a machine more expensive doesn't play through. I'd love to see these features on a Linux notebook even for the same price!

  9. Re:Weather related problems.. (in Michigan) on Experiences with DirecWay Satellite Internet · · Score: 1

I live in Northern Michigan (Roscommon), and I have several clients that have/had DirecWay and snow *is* an issue. I have been called out just for the purpose of climbing on the roof and sweeping off the dish.
Also, lag is a problem for more then just interactive programs. One insurance office used it to connect to the internet which is how they managed their customers on the home office's web page which was mostly text with small graphics for logos and such (like Slashdot...) It was sloooow. Think 3 sec DNS request, etc. I replaced it with a single 56k 3COM LanModem for a 5 person office and it was faster (for that situation)
On the other hand, I have a real estate office that uses it to download photos of properties and they love it. (And they just came out with a device to allow you to connect without the need of a windows PC, just ethernet!)
If you are still in Michigan, I would look at Wireless ISPs. They have their problems, I help manage one so I know, but they can get places where no one else can.

I also read the books at around the 5th grade. (I had the books read to me in the 3rd grade.) And I *did* go to church every Sunday as well as as Wednesday night. Since that was where I also went to school, you could say I had a "religious" upbringing. I also did not see the christian allegory until it was pointed out to me after the fact. Then, of course, it smacked me in the face.

I just found my old books and am currently reading them to my own kids and was, just today, wondering if I would point out the Aslan = Jesus thing. I think now that I will let it be just a good story.

They don't want something new, unless the change is going to be invisible to them. I don't mean to nit pick, but Office does this from one version to another. I had one engineer that lost years of little tweeks he had in an excel file that calculated the air velocity required to keep a dust partical suspended blah..blah..blah when the company moved from office 95 to office 97. I'll admit that they seemed to have learned their lesson with the file format, but every version seems to have interseting GUI tricks (Dan! All of my Tools menu is missing!)

  14. Dell vs. HP on Tech Support Getting Even Worse · · Score: 1

In the last month, I have had two experiences with tech support. The first was with HP in which I hosed up my Pavilion notebook's bios. One call to tech support and I had a RMA in less then 5 minutes. The best part though was that I sent it out on a Friday and had it back, fixed, on a Wednesday. All covered under warranty I might add.
The second was when I was giving a friend, whom I had recommended buy a Dell, a hand. (I always recommend a major manufacture to my non-techie friends) He had trouble with the packaged software and called Dell for help since he's still under warranty. The tech of course told him to reinstall the software and when he inserted the CD, it was unreadable. So the tech told him to expect a replacement CD in the mail. About a week later the CD comes and then a few days after that, he gets a bill for 19.95 for the CD. So I call tech support for him this time and the tech was a total jerk, he wouldn't give me his employee number (I always ask for my own records and I tell them that) he yelled at me like it was my fault I got the bill... Well in the end, he tells me that accounting always sends out a bill and I should just ignore it because it's under warranty. After I hang up, I wonder how many people would just have sent Dell the money and what Dell would do with the money if I did send it in.
In the last 6 months, I know 4 people that have bought Dell PC's or notebooks on my recommendation, but that's the last one.

They mentioned use with the elderly just a little too much. "Well, here's your IntelliMate Rover 2000 (tm) Grandma. I'll pop in again is six or seven years, just so we can chat..."
