Hyper V being built into server 2008 is what sold my company on it. We were doing a 2k8 migration already so why not just get the hyper V project knocked out at the same time without having to buy too much more software. (We did purchase the VMM)
The media industry only needs to do one thing to stop a big percentage of piracy. Stop ripping people off! CDs and games are way overpriced and out of reach of what people can actually afford. Just because you can pay for it does not mean your affording it. If CD's were 6 dollars I would start buying them immediately. Games should be no more than 20 dollars. Media production is dirt cheap with the exception of blue ray. The Media industry has a right to make money but wake up people they are trying to squeeze every penny they can out of us and that is not ok. I have not bought a game or CD in years and I will not until they start respecting me. If they choose not to then I have no moral issues with my current options.
The work you have to do I would say is relevant to the OS and software that you are running. The ammount of severs is just 1 factor. And the fact that they are blades really does not matter either, you could have 5 virtual servers on each blade and your work load just went way up. Your comment seems directed at your personal experience with another data center not what Blizzard is running.
No, you could not run this from your home. 9 Million + people have active subscriptions to WoW. Do you have any idea what the network traffic is for an app like WoW? No. You dont. Also they do support full downloads for the game as well as updates and thats gigs of content.
The last thing I want to do is give my iPhone more access to my PC. The only reason I have one is because the executives at my company absolutley had to have one and I am stuck supporting them. They have so many issues with Active Sync and Exchange. You cant even use the push feature unless your ok with 2 hour battery time. The day I use the iPhone for a controller for my PC is the day I replace IE with Safari. However I am very open to using a Wiimote. I have seen a few cool demos on PC.
I have no issues with IBM. I run about 20 IBM servers and have never had an issue with finding drivers or documentation. It may be a daunting task to find exactly what you need but thats only due to each server having a million different load outs you can select at the time of purchase. A small price to pay if you want to run the best hardware.
I was thinking the same. Does Apple even have the equivilent of Technet or MSDN? Microsoft has a ton of stuff for IT professionals to pull resources. I have only gone to Apples website for iTunes....
If you want to be a nuclear engineer join the Navy. If you want to be a brain surgeon go to college. I may have not picked the best title for my post but my point was that formal education is not necessary to make good money and own a house.
As far as the engineer who designs network protocols....Im willing to be he does not know much else. I did some work for AMCC and they guy you speak of sits in a cubicle all day doing nothing but designing circuits yet he lacks a basic understanding of how the rest of a PC / software works. Thoes guys are highly specialized and do not really get paid for it. (Unless they get a patent)
I never finished high school and actualy had a grade point average of 0.00 one semester.
Yet today I am a systems administrator for a well known company and do some consulting on the side.
I did serve as an IT in the Navy to get training and a few lines on my resume but I already knew a lot about computers and networking because It has always been my hobby since I was 13.
I am a people person I dress very well so that alone puts me in another category of IT.
Bottom line if you want success bad enough you can make it happen without traveling the cookie cutter path. I am currently enrolled in school but I only take classes which I have an interest in and will directly benefit my career. I could care less about obtaining a degree.
You obviously have not been in the Military. Boot Camp in the Core is nothing like Air Force Boot Camp. Pilots are not soldiers, sure they may wield 9mm side arms but you will never see them marching on the front lines.
Systems do not need to be powerful in the military. 90% of the time systems have 1 job to do and 1 job only with a handful of technicians supporting that system. However you do need to know how to operate a crapload of these systems and that's where you get your robustness from.
I was an IT in the navy for 6 years and I still encountered high stress. I was on a DDG so the crew was around 300. We had a lot of colatteral duties requiring me to take up arms from a 9mm to.50 cal mounted big ass gun. Also General Quarters requires everyone to be in a critical thinking life or death situation. Its very rare that you will never be put in danger. 9/11 one of the planes that hit the Pentagon hit the one of the offices of a Navy IT dept that was basicly an intel command. Your a target just for being in the military.
Wolfenstein did not have 3D graphics. It was 2D maps that looked 3 dimensional. You could not see the backs or sides of any enemys or objects. Mostly sprites.
I would say your average user has no idea that Vista has flaws. Currently with SP1 Vista has no serious issues that would keep me from reccomending it to a client other than "Dont get Vista because 7 is about to come out."
I see your point however isnt "high-end" more of a relative term? You could have a high end server or a high end business desktop workstation. What exacly determines "high-end"? Granted a gaming PC is not going to have a Raid 10 configuration(some do) and be able to work as a server in an enterpise environment but it surely can do "high-end" gaming.
If Mac's had 90% of the user base such as Microsoft does you would see the same problem with Macs or Linux even. It has nothing to do with system security it's simply that PC's are who virus programmers target.
So much hatred towards Microsoft here. My experiences with Server 2008 and Windows 7 have been nothing short of stellar. Terminal services are rediculously easy to setup through IIS (which happens to be more secure than Apache currently) and Windows7 benchmarks are better than XP. What else do you guys want from Microsoft?
I am not aware of any OS's that can handle profile management better than Windows. Group policy installs have made my daily life much better. I have dealt with a few corrupt profiles but nothing that required more than 30 minutes that the most to fix.

Maybe you should look into a VW TDI. Diesel is very capable of being a fuel used in sports cars.

That or get with the times and learn how to capture an image of your PC.

So a graphics card pushing more polygons per second than anything else on the market is not high end?
Did you not read about the Apache security flaw that was posted on Slashdot just this week?

I pay to see a lot of movies. They are still crap.

This is more dependant on the network hardware your VPN is tunneling through.
