  1. Like the Amiga...? on Would Linux Survive if Solaris Was Free? · · Score: 2

If you take the Amiga as an example: It had a huge following, and still does even though it is no longer being produced (Ok, it is, albeit in very small quantities by clone manufacturers). If Solaris was to suddenly be made free, I think something similar would happen - people would still flock around Linux because of it's almost cultish following. And the advantage here over the Amiga is that Linux would still be produced, and would be updated.

Linux is a very very strong contender in the Unix marketplace, and I really don't see it slipping if Solaris was free.

    Just my 2p.

  2. Reverse engineering and Commodore on Reverse Engineering? · · Score: 2

We all remember Commodore - makers of that much adored Amiga (of which 3 still reside in my bedroom - 1 of which I still use). Well, I remember hearing that Commodore lost the design of the Custom Chips and had to reverse engineer them. Not quite a Competitor reverse engineering someone elses software/hardware, but I thought it was interesting.

And some people wonder why Commodore went down the tubes...

  3. Film on AOL Sues Over "You've Got Male" · · Score: 1

Isn't there a film called "You've Got Mail" - why aren't AOL suing over that?
(This film is also known in the US as "You Have Mail".)

Maybe she was referring to the film, not AOL's coined phrase...?

  4. Perspective on Ask Slashdot: Building a Large Email Service · · Score: 1

To put greg's comment into perspective, we have 1200 users on site here, and we have 3 Exchange servers. 2 servers couldn't handle it. Each server is a Compaq Presario (2xP6 @ 350MHz, I think), with 512Mb RAM and several GB HD space.

I'd seriously look at all other solutions, wether commercial or OpenSource.

  6. Re:As long as.. on The Matrix to have two sequels · · Score: 1

Unfair. Not being a Keanu Reeves fan myself (although I did like him in the Bill and Ted adventures!), I thought he was quite good in this. One of his better films, IMHO. He suited his character well.

OK, the Kung Fu stuff was a little much sometimes, I'll give you that.

Can't wait for the new films though - The Matrix is one of those films that I just couldn't get out of my head for weeks. Can't wait for the DVD...

Seemingly it will not be realised on VHS - is this true? Can someone confirm?

Isn't /. just great. I had the same problem, so I just kept reading 'cos I knew the answer would be here. And it is.

Well done fella. I think /. should be officially listed as a 24/7 Linux support site! :)

Most, if not all, of the Amiga WEB browsers have supported PNG for quite some time now. It's about time people switched.

However, lets see what WI is like - maybe we'll be slating PNG next year...

  10. Split Keyboards on Ask Slashdot:Ergo Keyboards · · Score: 1

I remember some time ago looking for a nice split keyboard. The ideal one I was looking for would split into 2 seperate halfs so I could position them on my desk the way I wanted. After some searching I found one.

If you have a look here, there are a list of split keyboards (the Kinetik isn't here, as it isn't a split keyboard - either is the MS one). The keyboard I really like is the one at the end of the page... They also sell a really nice chair that has the 2 parts of the keyboard attached to the arms, and they can be adjusted around to axes.

However, I might buy a Kinetik one - they look nice. Asked my boss to buy me one in work and she laughed... :(

Oh, on of the pages somewhere around that link also lists other types of keyboards, including the Kinetik and the MS ones, as well as some other ergo keyboards.

  12. Typical... on Linux 2.2.0pre9 · · Score: 1

I'm a few days behind. I decided to catch up and patch up my 2.2.0-pre6 to 7, and then 8. I recompiled/installed over lunch. I haven't even rebooted the machine yet and pre9 comes out (it's wasn't out when I started, 'cos I checked).

Ah well, my linux machine likes compiling. It must, 'cos it does it so well.

Keep going lads. 2.2.0 here we come.

  13. Ugh. The Microsoft User Interface on Further aMozilla Developments · · Score: 1

I have to agree - MUI is terrible. The idea behind it is quite good, but there are a few points that I really really don't like... 1) It is very Microsoft (slow, big, bloated, etc). 2) You have to pay for it - programmers have to pay for the dev. kits, and the users have to pay in order to be able to use things like Themes. The unregistered very just barely works. 3) There are other things, like Triton and ClassAct, which are much fasters. They may not be as configurable, but they are smaller, faster, and produce results as good as unregistered MUI will allow (and they are free!) If you have a look at the Amiga browser AWEB you will see a browser made with ClassAct. You will see that it is still very Amiga like (which I personally still like!), and it works.

  14. OSS on Creative Labs Seeking Linux Coder · · Score: 1

From the article, it certainly looks to me that the team will be OSS, or will have some input into the OSS community. The drivers look like they will also be integrated into the Kernel.

It would be a laugh is Linus/Alan decided that the code wasn't good enough for the Kernel. I think I'd split my sides!

Anyway, well done Creative. Another step for Linux, and yet another reason to buy Creative products.
