the cost of employment is only high in some areas of the USA if you would move your base of operations to parts of the country that don't have as high a cost of living then your cost of business will go down.
I think its a beast for us when on the off chance they do break because we need the least amount of down time possible due to the fact that these are radio stations we deal with and time down means money lost. (such is the case with almost anything I know...LOL)
I see Novell daily. Many of the customers we have ( I work in tech support) use Novell servers for their database machines and they are actually very reliable. seems like they just chug away for much longer than a windows server running the same systems. I agree that it is a beast when something breaks on a Novell server and there just dont seem to be many experts on them anymore. (I am so not one, even though I do know some basics). all in all Novell did many things right.
we joke about this.. but it really is amazing that this was possible. can you imagine taking directions for something like that through a text and doing it. to me it would be like someone texting me directions on how to build an engine and me truly making it run
I am not speaking for other techs here but I work in tech support myself, it is a bit different as our support is very specialized for our software and we are the only level really. we do have standard techs and senior techs but that is the only difference really. seniors just get payed more and get special assignments. however I do know that most people look at tech support on a resume and do blow you off. but there are some employers like mine where tech support and troubleshooting skills are what they want. they hired me fresh out of college and trained me
