Pros:
+ C Style Syntax
+ JDK is Free
+ OS Agnostic
+ Free IDE's available
+ Lots of internet / forum support
+ Opens a door to mobile development with Android
Cons:
+ "Slow"
Now, compared to Visual Basic, which is slow, requires Windows, not to mention Visual Studio, which even for Student versions is expensive compared to a free download of Oracle's JDK or OpenJDK and Eclipse / NetBeans / Android Studio.
C# would be a better choice than Visual Basic, but for students -- having a dev environment that's obtainable for a very low cost (free) and even runs on free Operating Systems is very compelling -- especially for the underprivileged kids.
The $35 Raspberry Pi doesn't come with a power supply
Not hard to build a rechargable battery pack capable of also powering servo motors
or a case
Look up "Embedded"
, or any storage
SD Cards are cheap. You don't just have a few laying around?
. That stuff adds up... display, peripherals, HDMI cable...
Ever hear of SSH? Headless?
Most little projects I could think of doing as a Pi project would be better served with an old (or even a cheap new) android phone/tablet, which would also include a touchscreen, wifi, bluetooth, audio, camera, power supply for not much more.
Thanks for wasting everyone's time with moldy, stale "news" that is nothing more than clickbait for Dice.
I'd say sell the site back to CmdrTaco but it was shit then and it's shit now.
Actually, the person who deserves the beanie is the slashdot coder who implements a true account deletion, a way to delete an account and all comments. That is what slashdot truly needs.
"Oh, but slashdot has never deleted comments" -- OH YES THEY HAVE. Ask the Scientologists about that one.
... not complaining, as I am a Linux user, but Steam OS is going to be the game changer, and the back catalog working on Steam is arguably more important than two AAA titles.
The Seismic Event would be Newell confirming Half-Life 3... and saying it's coming to Steam OS (Linux) first.
Great. Wonder what you guys will break for that. Half the fun of visiting slashdot is to see "What did they completely fuck up today?"
Of courrse, half as fun is reading the comments to see who's dick the slashbot collective is sucking.
You know, I've been here a while..and it's time for a coup de gras.
Go Fuck Yourself, San Diego. You too, Slashbots!
Some fun fact for slashbots:
Barack Obama is a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure. Natalie Portman isn't that attractive, she has no tits and the body of a 10 year old boy. Oh, wait, that's why you like her. Got it.
Cowboy Neal has his own zip code. When he sits around his house, he really sits around his house. The shoe shiners love him, because they know they don't actually have to shine his shoes, and that he has to take their word for it. Cowboy Neal hasn't seen his own penis without the help of a mirror since 3rd grade.
Samzenpus is a portmanteau of "Sam's a Pussy" which he ironically wishes he had... along with the body of a 10 year old boy so the slashbots would find him attractive.
Good bye, Slashdot. Goodbye, useless virgin slashbots. May all your parent's basements flood so you have to go out into the real world.
Keeping in mind the gravity of that, and accepting the responsibility that comes with that, is something that every gun owner would do well to think about.
Hey dude. Want some Venison? I bagged a nice doe Saturday morning. It's delicious.
Depends on the ammo used, but overall, you're right. FMJ rounds will likely pass right through you, but a.40 or.45 the impact from the kinetic force is just as bad for you as the gunshot wound itself. If we're talking hollowpoints - or even better - Federal Hydrashoks or Hornady Critical Defense rounds - then even a 380 rounds is going to ruin your day.
The most important thing in self-defense with a hand gun: shot placement. A little Ruger LCP 380, if you use a hollowpoint and hit center mass, will be effective.
planet boasts a ring system around 200 times larger than that of Saturn, the only planet in our solar system hosting a ring system of its own.
Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune would like to have a word with you.
Planets with Rings
Media is cheap, more scratch resistant than Blu-Ray, and put it in your gun safe.
If they didn't already have a plan to invade every other country on the planet, they should get started.
Having a plan does not mean that you have to execute it, you're just being prepared for "What If" scenarios.

Not my problem you lack imagination.
$200 is a lot more money than $35 for a Raspberry Pi.
Cost per performance, and especially for embedded stuff, the Pi is all kinds of awesome.
MOD PARENT UP.
This may be the greatest post in slashdot history.

What happened next was a weird trick....
... if it weren't for you meddling kids!!
And how would you know this, belt sander boy?
Liar.
Minecraft is written in Java, why do you need WINE for it?

Shouldn't you wait for Luna Park to be built first?
... but I have positive Karma and am contributing to a discussion, Slashbots!
Slow Down Cowboy!
Slashdot requires you to wait between each successful posting of a comment to allow everyone a fair chance at posting a comment.
It's been 83 minutes since you last successfully posted a comment
And you guys wonder why Digg and Reddit kick sand in your face on a daily basis.
You obviously don't know very many Canadians!!!
Which means just one thing: He's very lucky.
Canaduh sucks.
PGAdmin3 is the Thomas the Tank Engine of Database Management -- it's simple, and ultimately a really useful engine.

To whoever modded the above parent -1, Troll: THAT A WAY, SON!
Maybe someday you'll hit puberty and your balls will descend!
NOW HIT ME AGAIN, BEEYOTCH!
The fact that this comment got an "Overrated" mod - which won't come up for metamod - is proof that slashbots are repressed homosexual cowards.

Keeping in mind the gravity of that, and accepting the responsibility that comes with that, is something that every gun owner would do well to think about.

I use mine mostly as a very expensive hole punch. Your argument is still invalid.
