  1. When good ideas go bad. on Phishing Site Using Valid SSL Certificates · · Score: 1

Thank goodness that GoodLink will save us all!
Let's solve the spam/phishing problem by throwing large amounts of money at a technical problem.
I open and respond to every email that has my name in it.
Back to the shadows I go.

  2. News coverage on Another Plane Down in New York · · Score: 1

This may be a little of topic, but please bear with me. I have been trying to get any news about the crash on all the major news websites. Thank goodness for Slashdot. All the other "news" organizations are swamped. One would think, in this age of the internet and the relatively cheap hardware out there, that the major news sites would be able to handle the traffic of a serious disaster. Remember 9/11? Did they learn nothing from the sudden influx of traffic? People want to know what is going on. These sites claim to be news leaders. Yet anytime there is a serious need or desire for news, the site goes down.

    Sorry I had to vent.

  3. Security and 802.11b on 802.11b Network Scanning In London And Amsterdam · · Score: 1

I recently purchased the SMC Starter bundle for my laptop. It works great. As far as the security, I could be wrong, but I use 128bit encryption and MAC filtering. The encryption makes the data almost unreadable. The MAC filtering only allows specific MAC addresses to access the access point. Am I missing something?

  4. What ever happened to the open internet. on AOL vs. Microsoft in Desktop War? · · Score: 1

I must be missing something here. The last time I checked, no one person or organization owned the internet. Yet here are two huge companies trying desperately to do just that. The internet was meant to be an open standard and a place for people to express and exchange ideas. One does not need proprietary software to connect to the internet. Nor do they need the proprietary software to explore the internet.
These companies should stick with what they well and stay out of the internet.
AOL does have great content and other media. They do not need to have that bloated piece of crap they call an interface for their users to access that content.
Microsoft has always been a thorn in the side of the internet. Granted their browser is one of the better ones on the market. But, do they really need to create this .NET. I have heard great things about .NET and not one is anything that cannot be done openly with XML and other technologies.
Why do these companies continually try to make it difficult for users to enjoy the internet.

  5. Security Concerns on Trellix Licenses Blogger · · Score: 1

I like the idea of blogger. And have found that greymatter a better choice. It is built with perl on your server. ( no server modification needed )
The problem that I have with blogger is that you need to give them your FTP password. That makes me more than a little nervous. What if their site is cracked?

  6. Themes on Agenda Linux PDA Finally Out · · Score: 1

  7. If it's not Debian, it's not true. on Slashdot Moving To FreeBSD · · Score: 1

Anyone that knows Slashdot central, would know that the servers would need to be pried from the cold dead hand of CmdrTaco before they would remove Debian.
Besides this would have serious implications for the conspiracy theorists out there.

  8. oopsy... on SETI Accelerator Hoax Revealed · · Score: 2

Ok, I admit it. I was caught up in the mad rush to see one of these cards. Heck, I even wanted to purchase the "workhorse".
But, it was too good to be true.
Now, how does the collection of interested people's personal information play out with the privacy advocates? The hoaxters state on their page that they have deleted all pertinent information. But, how are we to be sure of that?
I beleive that they did delete the information. However, if I needed to obtain a large number of email address and snail mail addresses for my marketing mailing list, this is how it would be done.

I remember when my trusty 2400 baud serial modem was my hotrod. Now I get my knickers in a bunch when my dsl pipe is running a bit too slow. Looking to the future these types of break neck speeds are going to be a necessity, with ASPs popping up all over the place and more and more companies and individuals wanting to do more on the web than ever before. It would be really nice to save an encrypted backup of my hard drive to some remote server in an instant.

I actually tried to by a workstation and a laptop from Dell a few weeks ago. They would not even talk to me about Linux.

They said that they only sell Linux workstations to companies. So I made up a company name and asked them to email me details on workstations with Linux installed.

I am still waiting for that email.

I am going to try again. Hopefully, I can my open source workstation and laptop configured with care.

  18. How about wood grain on The Quest For Cool Cases Continues · · Score: 1
About a year ago I was building my dream office at home.(some call it the computer room)

I lined all the walls with oak paneling. Then I made some bookcases and three desks that appeared to come right out of the walls. It looks pretty cool, but it gets kind of dark in here. Anyway, my two beige pentium boxes kind of stood out in the room. I decided to try something new. On the side of each desk I created a box that I used as the case for my pc's.

The boxes were made of the same wood that I used for the desk. I lined them with some aluminum sheeting and just built the pc inside the box. The box itself comes right off the desk if you need to get in there for any reason. I also made it big enough to expand.
