  1. Evolution and the changes it could bring. on Windows CE going Open Source? · · Score: 2

I think that if we look at what could happen with this we'd find it would have some major effects through the open source community
Microsoft will have to lure the typically open source developer to even spend the bandwidth to download it, much less develop it.
This is well within their means -- in fact probably would be cheaper for them to bring out a few hunder OSS developers than paying for in house development
The major problem is not from that - but from the media hype that would ensue.
The major argument against 'open source' is that it's not commercially backed -- if Microsoft releases something that they are calling open source, regardless of it's actual license (I'd die of a heart attack if I saw wince under the GPL)
As the media says, "Microsoft is doing Open Source, you should too" the open source craze could get magnified by a thousand times, and Microsoft could shoot themselves in the foot with this. That would rock. :)
Of course it could just be another method to show that Microsoft is better than *nix/open source software/et al. because they have their own open source.
Either way if this actually happens some serious changes will occur in the community -- I'm hoping Microsoft shoots themselves :)

  2. Re:Patents scare me--Wrong reason, but agreed on Trend: More Software Patents · · Score: 2

Currently I am working on for a DNA sequencing company that does similar things
The company's primary focus is sequence a genome, find the function, if it's something 'commercially viable' than patent it and sell it to pharmacutical (I can't spell, i'm a programor) companies to develop cures and what not.
I was initially opposed to this, but after thinking about it for a while I figured that it's employing a lot of people, and saving a lot of people.
In most casees, ifthere is no commercial interest to do something, it will not get done (excluding Linux/OSS of course) -- that's the bottom line. If someone finds the cure for AIDS and patents it and does not grant licenses for the patent they will go under and wont afford the lawyer to enforce the patent rights anyway :)
Biomedical research is quite expensive and typically requires commercial support
Unfortunately as time goes on more and more patents are coming out -- instead of thinking, "hey there isn't an app that does xyz" we're being forced to think, "Hey -- is there a patent for xyz".
Limits should be placed on what you can patent -- patenting the idea for something should not be allowed, patenting the method should be. If you actually come up with something specifically unique than it's yours -- bottom line. But you should never be allowed to patent concepts and general idea's. (Like One click shopping for instance, check the /. archives if you don't know what I'm talking about)
Patents are a great thing and a bad thing -- which seems to mirror the majority of things about our economy.

As time goes on, those who walk around with proud "Linux is the shit" stickers on their laptop they will be identified as hackers. C'Mon.. how many real hackers (including standard code-jockey, mis-interpreted crackers) run windows anyway?
All of this can be analyzed through a bit of comparisons
It is our right to have private conversations
The government is directly violating that right as I type this

It is not illegal to exploit a computer. Assuming that you are authorized to do so.Through decent software and bug-fixes, this should be irrelevant
Instead of attempting to find a way to put the skills of people to good use, they attempt to break them.

We're turning into the witches and warlocks of Salem. The communists of the cold war. As this attitude progresses, as our children get a horrible taste in their mouth when the word "hack" is mentioned, the true nerds will be the targets of unfair persecution
I don't want this to happen. I like my linux box, I like finding security holes for my company -- and they like me doing it. Instead of bashing a particular site bash the entire ideology between the proper etiquete they are pushing, and the reality. We are the software world. We are the strongest force on earth, our software powers everything that matters in our civilization. Now they want to turn us into targets if we even slightly derivate from the choosen path. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I don't want to live in a world without the freedoms I've grown so accustomed to.
If you have children, please inform them that hackers are what push the industry. Hackers find the bugs that should have never been released in the first place. If you are a child -- understand the difference between benefiting society, and harming it. As far as cDc and L0pht go, they did wonderful things, they've proven without a doubt that micrsoft products should have never left Redmond.

  6. Dvorak Ergonomic Keyboards on Keyboards - Dvorak or Qwerty? · · Score: 1

I found Kinesis Ergo somehow a few years back (I don't really remember where or why) has been making probably the most advanced keyboards I've seen in a while. A totally cross platform design with Mac/PC/Sun support that allows switching on the flying between most major keysets, including Dvorak and Qwerty I have been using a qwerty keyboard for about 12 years now, since I was 6 or 7 years old. I naturally adapted to touch typing with it and now I can type a sustained 120wpm on it. I still have yet to try a Dvorak keyboard layout because I haven't had a need -- I type more than fast enough, and typically when I'm programming I don't hit my peak 120wpm just because I'm either thinking while I'm typing or the key combo's are virtually impossible to hit while I'm speeding along. My peak recorded speed has been at 144wpm, without falling below 90% accuracy. The QWERTY Vs. Dvorak debate seems to me to just be a simple case of personal preference -- while the Dvorak is a superior layout design (15% more efficient) it's mostly due to the person controlling it. Thank you, total is $0.02, pay at the first window.

In that time I actually found the most dependable and trust worthy friends I've made in my lifetime. Mostly due to an us-against-them attitude. And for all of the drooling idiots that populated DEF CON, they have a good purpose. To make people realize that there are security problems, and that those drooling idiots can get into their systems. If you want security, don't connect your box to the internet. That is the only security. While this article is talking about how malicious these hackers are, and how they are just a bunch of ruffians who had no parents (ok, I'm improvising) to teach them any better he's missing the point of computer security and DEF CON. As long as there is a reason -- there will be someone doing it. And hackers do have a code of ethics -- the real ones, not in it for the chicks.

I'm not sure if anyone else noticed this -- but he seemed to only quote the experiences he has had with a limited range of companies. While he admits this it still seems like he's caught up on the experiences he's had with only a few companies. Currently, I run a small network off of a 1.5/384 DSL. I pay $60/month and that includes a block of IP's (8,6 usable). The premiere cable service around here is @Home which seems very lacking. I've had people tell me that during peak hours they're bandwidth cuts down to only twice that of a dialup modem, and they pay twice as much as a standard dialup account (~$40-$50). I don't use PBi (Pacific Bell Internet) because they're government regulated and also extremely lacking in the technical department, but I do use their lines. The routing is done through a Southern CA company called Orconet. I have never had any downtime while using Orconet, ever. My latency times are typically 15ms. I have no microfilters on my phone, and I don't ever hear any static on my lines. I'm not saying DSL is better than cable -- but this article seemed slightly lobsided because this guy got stuck with a poor DSL carrier. If anybody is still debating whether to go with cable or DSL -- don't listen to much this article has to say. Most of it is so isolated to the region that unless you are in Boston it's not much good. $0.02 deposited.
