I can tell you that I've never heard of this credit/plan/thingy before. And while I suppose the situation isn't *too* bad (I live in a town of about 5K, and afaik, everyone who wants it can get cable), I wouldn't say that we are the model of the modern major um, connected place:-) I guess I'm just bitter that after moving from Boise to Kuna (no, I didn't make that name up!), I had to downgrade from DSL to Crappy Cable. I'm serious, for the exact same amount a month, I get 1/3rd the upload speed, 3/4ths the download speed, and ten times the downtime... I never thought I'd prefer Qwest over *anything*, but at least my DSL line didn't drop out twice a week.
Oh, well. I'm probably going to get 20 responses from people living in Bliss and Sugar City (also names I didn't make up!), telling me I should praise the gods that I can even get cable. To them I say: "Move the hell out! I did!"
Well, seeing as this isn't FreeSWAN, maybe you want to restate your objections? I mean, complaining about FreeSWAN when talking about putting ipsec in the kernel, doesn't make much sense if it isn't FreeSWAN that they are using...
But on the other hand, who wants to read the article when you can, instead, spout off and look like an idiot?
Don't use multiple terms, use screen. Don't use IE, use chimera or omniweb (not that omniweb is *faster*, just much "lighter" when opening multiple windows, IME). Make sure that you are not running anything in the background that you don't need to (apache is a ram killer). Um, I don't think I'm running any sort of performance tweaks or anything (anymore). *shrug* Maybe add a dab of patience B-) And after all that, realize that we quite probably just have differing levels of tolerance for application responsivness... Hence my original post *grin*
I think this is a great time to point out that people should be very careful about blindly trusting what other people say when it comes to performance issues and what is "creeper slow" vs. "works for me!". Case in point: my laptop is the original toilet-bowl iBook. That is, g3-300, bumped to 160Megs of RAM, 6 gig harddrive, ati rage video. For a long time, I didn't install OSX because of people saying that it was unusable with anything less than a G4. Then, 10.1 rolled out, and I tried it, and it was slow, but usable (I would develop on it, if I wasn't at home or work).
Since 10.2, I actually prefer using my laptop w/OSX to my desktop athlon 750 w/512 Megs, G450, and KDE 3.0.4. I can run terminal (w/screen), omniweb (3 windows), Project Builder, ssh-agent, java-browse (that's not the right name, whatever tool is used to browse java class docs), and iTunes, "fast enough". That is, I can switch back and forth between apps without delay, scrolling is normal, and iTunes doesn't skip. I don't really know what else to ask for... Oh, and divx movies play full-screen just fine using quicktime, but java compiles could definitely do with a speedup. And I don't play games (Jewel Toy doesn't count).
Having said all that, I'm not discounting Boomer's experience. I have no doubt that his G3 was not fast enough for his needs under OSX. But if he had different needs (or expectations!) it would have worked just fine. So if someone out there is waffling between going with OSX or not, depending entirely on the reputation that it has for being slow, I can only suggest tring it for yourself (edonkey2k is great!) and if it is worth it, buy it. It almost goes without saying that if it isn't worth it, you should delete it...
You've garunteed that someone reading this story next week will not be able to find it! *Please* provide an actual link to the story. Surely I'm not the only one that reads slashdot in batches weekly, instead of rabidly refreshing the front page every hour? I'm lucky to have caught this one early....
Actually, they were almost completely implemented by somebody that is not a "hardcore" konq/khtml developer. I.e., somebody decided they really wanted them, wrote them up, and then several other people helped with the debugging and configuration. I really wish I remembered the guy's name, but it's actually been a few months, and my memory is poor:-P But here, like in all other open source projects, the stuff gets done that people want. If the vocal minority includes somebody with the talent to implement tabs, then, guess what, here you go:-) And enough different people have piped up about loving tabs, that I think it is more than just a matter of "not knowing how to use their window manager".
All that said, I dislike tabs, tried them, and haven't used them since B-)
I knew as soon as I hit submit that I used the wrong gift as an example:-P I should have mentioned the little thingy to soak your feet in (that I've used *once*), or maybe the shirts...
I have a problem where my wife asks what I want, forcing me to give her a list, et. al, I give her *very* specific items (much like yours, but I've already done the research and just hand her the part number, price, and store), and then she goes out and gets me something completely different. I.e., a vibrating back cushion. I mean, wth? Her excuse is that if she got what is on my list, it wouldn't be a suprise! I will never understand women...
It's a two-parter. Take this sentence (that you quoted):
"Computers, including many running Windows operating systems, are used throughout the United States Department of Defense and by the armed forces of the United States in Afghanistan and elsewhere."
and add in this one:
"The protocol, which is part of Message Queuing, contains a coding mistake that would threaten the security of enterprise systems using it if it were disclosed, Allchin said."
Combined together, you get "Computers used by the US DoD and Armed Forces are running a protocol that, if exposed, would have it's security 'threatened' (i.e., compromised)."
There, not out of context, directly from the article. Have a nice day:-)
The menu bar, at the top. I.e., click on any of them (message, mailbox, format, etc), and it take 30-45 seconds before the menu "dropdown" appears. Sorry about that, I guess I should have been more clear:-)
On a slightly OT note, I'm running OSX on an original (blueberry) ibook, upgraded to 160Megs of RAM (that's a G3 300mhz) and haven't seen the perfomance issues that other people do. In fact, the Mail.app menu problem is the only speed-related thing I have to complain about, and I doubt that it is related to my processor at all (i.e., it's a config thing, or something). I'm *very* impressed! My wife's Quicken and my shell, co-existing *natively* on the same machine! w00t;-)
and I really don't know where the "correct" place is to ask for help, so I'll do it here:-) It's not like there is a plethora of posts crowding this out...
Very simply: why does Mail.app take so freaking long to bring up the menu? I'm talking 30-45 seconds, from when I click on it and when I get the menu up. After the first time, it (usually) goes much quicker. No other app has this problem. They all take "normal" (sub-1sec) times. I'm using IMAP, if that matters. Please help, as it's rendering Mail almost useless to me, and I'm about to revert to just mutt (which kinda defeats the purpose of using the Lickable UI(tm)).
Re-read what he said. I took it to mean that research on embryonic cells is creepy, not that disliking such research is creepy. I think you've gone into "Auto-defensive" mode:-)
"Fourth: Get a good C++ and STL implementation. If you don't, you could wind up with compile errors that will drive you insane. "
Okay, now define "good c++ and stl implemtation":-) In a scary form of kismet, I work for a small software devel team that is porting away from roguewave, and we are heavily considering the stl (two reason: tools.h++ is EOL'ed, and we want *good* linux support, which RW isn't providing). Which version of g++ should we be using? What version of the stl? You need to 'splain B-)
Doh! That's what I get for just rushing through the process.... My only excuse is that I was in a hurry, and buying the book to read on a trip:-P Luckily I also brought The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents... Now *that* was a good book (and provided great contrast to TPS:-).
he sucks:-) I say that as someone that bought "The Philosophical Strangler" in e-book form just last week, and didn't make it past the first few chapters. It read like he had once heard about Pratchet, in passing, and was baseing his writing style on that. Really weak jokes, stuff that is supposed to be funny (Look! A guy kills people, and has intelligent conversations at the same time! har har), and a horrible "first-person" telling (Then, I walked past the place where John was concieved, but I'm thirsty, so I won't tell you about the rest of it.). It was exceedingly lame...
Anyways, this is slightly OT, as TPS is not available for free (or I would have previewed and saved myself $4) but I don't begrudge the money, as this is a sweet idea, and I am hoping it takes off. Whew, speaking of bad writing, checkout *that* run-on...

Well, maybe I'll give it a shot. Everytime I've asked previously on mac boards, I've been told that I'd need something more like 512Meg, just to get it to the "acceptable" level. Thanks to those that replied with their experiences, rather than assuming I'm some sort of troll....

And I use MacPerl, because I can hack around with it on road trips and write nifty stuff like "count the license plates" to keep my kids entertained. Sheesh, you'd think that there was no such thing as an old macintosh out there....
But I'm not in california, I used the "never get this again" link after the first one, and subsequently got 3 more, and it was freaking html! Does California still have the death penalty??
