BTW, I think they averaged about 80 some holes per tile. (yes, i was that kid who actually had a reasonable guess as to the number of holes in the celing)

yes, but the secretary's workstation has an almost zero ROI. getting a new pc to let the secretary surf the interweb and play solitaire is usually not top priority for managers. having servers that stay up all the time usually is. esp. if your servers ARE the business.

like we have a product that customers run on our servers via a citrix client. If those servers go down, that's money down the drain. But if they stay up, that's money in the bank. Which is why getting a PHB to sign for a new server is much easier than getting them to sign for a new development machine for me.

    ROI is everything.

even if MS's linux myths page was correct about linux having a greater TCO, business types don't care that much about the initial cost. That's why RH can get away with charging 10K for a multiprocessor licence. Businesses will buy it if it will earn them money in the long run. Of course it really helps if there is a low TCO because that will make your ROI go up.

the linux myths page focuses solely on TCO. Someone should set up a high profile windows myths page that focuses on ROI. It'd be funny if it were full of FUD about windows, but better if it were actually truthfull. Get the PHB's out there to tell the IT guy, "i want one of those lunix boxes on my computers"

i wish my student email account was spam-free. I used to receive very little spam, until the university GAVE away it's email lists. Not sold. Gave. Apparently they were tired of credit card companies asking if so-and-so was a student, and having to say yes or no. (A lot of student groups do fundraising by getting people to fill out credit card apps) So they just gave out the email list and said "if they aren't on here, they aren't a student" These lists were then sold to lord knows how many spammers. Now, my account is full of spam. :(

What really burns me is that the university didn't make any money in the deal because they gave away the lists. Not a cent. Not like it would have been better if they did, but at least it wouldn't seem so futile.

because PHP tends mixes content / presentation and control. and that mix does not scale well. and is a real pain fixing.

If you have good design, you keep your presentation and control separate. The problem is that most people find it easier to just write the same 6 or 7 lines over again rather than create a function that will only get called 2 or 3 times. I know I've been guilty of that more than once. But if it takes you 10 min to just write it out 3 times or 5 min to write it once, 5 min to think about the design of the function, and 5 min to make sure that it works every time you call it; you haven't really saved any time, and your productivity has gone down.

Of course, those numbers assume that you are a crappy typist, horrible at remembering specific syntax, and know how to use copy/paste, or basically... me.

It may be more secure by being obscure, but how am I assured of that security? I'm not. By using an open system (or at least a commercial product), I know what I purchased, how much i paid for it, what kind of security features it has, and if it is an open system, where bugs in the system may exist.

Basically, with commercial software or open software, I know what they are doing and getting themselves into(to an extent), but with a specialized "govt. use only" system, I don't. Not knowing what my government is doing(again, to a certain extent) frightens me.
