  1. Need more IAU definitions on What Exactly Is a Galaxy? · · Score: 1

The IAU has some work ahead of it.

Having recently defined, what is a planet, which waited multiple millennia a formal definition; we now need additional IAU definitions. For in addition to what is a galaxy, there's also, what is a star?

For example, is a star restricted to a main sequence star or are degenerate objects like white dwarves and neutrons stars, stars? And if they are stars, then are black hole stars?

We wait with baited breath for further IAU amplification.

  2. Perhaps centuries from now on Teachers Back Away From Evolution In Class · · Score: 1

Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species in 1859. That's 152 years ago, six generations ago. Within less than a decade, the fossil record provided overwhelming proof that his theory of natural selection was correct. Late 20th Century and early 21st Century genetic research has provided additional irrefutable, supporting evidence. Charles Darwin was correct. Scientifically this has been known for well over a century.

And yet Creationism, a.k.a. Intelligent Design, still prevails in many classrooms.

We have historical precedence for this, the Ptolemaic system. It held sway scientifically for over 1400 years. Many regarded the Copernican system as blasphemy many decades after it was scientifically established. It took centuries to overcome this hurdle.

I suspect the same will be true for Evolution versus Creationism. Perhaps in 2111, Evolution will be taught in every American public school classroom ... but then again, perhaps not.

  3. Annoyance factor on Bill Gates Is More Admired Than the Pope · · Score: 1

When you look at the top three most admired people: Barack Obama, George W Bush and Bill Clinton, you can immediately see poll responders were giving USA Today/Gallop extremely predicable responses.

What pollsters don't discuss – and will never discuss – is their poll results annoyance factor. Responders are at home, intruded upon by a complete stranger, who is asking scripted, inane and repetitive questions. Responders are too polite to say, "Hey, you're bothering me. You're boring. Get lost!" So they give quick answers simply to get rid of the pollster.

What's disturbing is how many people take these poll results seriously. Barack Obama, George W Bush and Bill Clinton aren't really the most admired men in the world. Nor, for that matter, are Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin, Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama the most admired women in the world. They're merely unimaginative responses from people who are eager to get rid of an annoying pollster.

Isn't the earth in outer space?

You have an interesting point. By definition, outer space is: "any location outside the Earth's atmosphere." So Earth and its atmosphere aren't part of outer space, yet they do reside in outer space.

The Earth is 6,000 years old, flat, in the center of the Universe and is orbited by the Sun, Moon, planets & stars. Ptolemy is right, Copernicus wrong. Dinosaurs are a lie, fossils are a lie, evolution is a lie, paleoanthropology is a lie, evolutionary genetics is a lie, carbon-14 dating is a lie, continental drift is a lie and geologic deep time is a lie. Young Earth Creationists are right; Charles Darwin, Gregor Mendel and James Hutton wrong. With all that acceptance and suspension of belief, why is it so difficult to believe that Mars is at least 3.5 billion years old? When scientific observation & experiment and deductive reasoning are thrown out the window, anything is possible. An infinite number of angels can dance on a head of a pin.
