  1. Yet Another Reason No One Takes Linux Seriously on Sun Security Patch Introduces Security Hole · · Score: 5, Funny
    Well take a look people...

MS: doesn't release bug fixes because their are no bugs. Only security updates and service packs to appease people.

Sun: releases a bug fix with an even bigger bug.

    Linux: released bug fixes quickly.

And that's it, linux will forever be in last because of the fact they can't follow simple rules. You would think that everyone had a copy of Linux's source the way bugs are spotted and fixed so quick .. sheesh. Perhaps we should try and sell the source of linux to India?

PS - that was sarcasm ...

So because it's in a FAQ, that means it must be followed and /. can't be held responsible? Think about what you are saying here. That because the editors of slashdot have placed the information about my post in a FAQ that they are unable to resolve the problem and will of course not be liable for anything they do socially, morally, or legally?

okay ... here's a FAQ question to add.

Q: Why do you insist on selling crack to children?

A: Simple, children are more likely to get hooked at a younger age and will be less likely to turn us in to the cops.

does this make it inherintly right because it's written in a FAQ?? well ... does it???

If slashdot wants to continue this, they really need to find a cache system, this isn't responsible or fair, especially for a weekend.

Pi is represented usually by a fraction or relatively simple equation, it's just the division that makes the number go on for ever. I don't understand why we must break pi down into a decimal when it can already be represented by a simple fraction. Figuring pi beyond the ten thousandth spot is overkill.

However, it has always been a bragging right for many a geek to find as many places in pi as possible, and now that has been accomplished. I also have created a new world record. Taking the equation two divided by three I have found the 100000 trillionth digit ... it's "3" ...

  13. Have you actually read the books? on Prey · · Score: 2
MC makes books with semi-resolved endings to make them believeable. If only a certain amount of people are involved and most of them die, then it gives a feeling of "what if this really did happen". If you want to know about the what-if's use your imagination. I don't understand why books just can't end anymore, not everything was designed to be a freekin series.

I personally love every one of MC's books and own them all. He spices a touch of science fiction, but uses the same idea as Sixth Day with "the not so distant future". He takes new technologies that are more than likely going to become standard ... and puts them in his books. Some people really need to understand that there's a reason there are so many books, obviously no one is going to like them all.

Xeran is what I use. They are a linux shop that have killer bandwidth, and don't have a limit. I get 300 megs storage, unlimited pop accounts, someone who I can actually call on the phone, prompt service etc.

They don't offer telnet/ssh access with their accounts, but it's not neccessary as anything you want/need installed they do for you. You are basically free to do what you want with your service and I have yet to have a problem with them on anything. I wanted PHP4 and they installed it when they got my email and I was setup the same day I emailed them. There's other features from xeran, here's a few quick links:

    Hosting plans

Reseller accounts (Basically you can host webpages through them)

They also offer co-location and dedicated server, but I don't see why you'd need that. What most everyone does with me is register a domain then they use dns from MyDomain and do a blind redirect to a subdirectory of my site. So they have their own .com and they don't pay a cent for it. If you can find somewhere that will host a free page for you, MyDomain might be all you need, they are free and do really cool things.

    For Example:

    Main Site (dugnet.com)

    monkeypirates.org

    www.dugnet.com/monkeypirates/

There is no "perfect" consumer. 90% of the crap people buy is impulse anyways because it sure as hell isn't a neccessity to read a magazine, buy a movie, etc. For not-impulse purchases it's a bragging factor, 9 times out of 10 the average script kiddie can't tell the difference of quake 3 on a geforce 2 mx than a geforce 4 ti 4200, but they'll shell out the $500 for the geforce 4 simply to say "I've got a geforce 4", and it doesn't go away with age either, just talk to anyone who sells imported cars (no, not volkswagons).

You want a product that sells?? Give it a flashy package and get some famous people to say it's "cool". Look at the mini-rc cars "whoa shaq plays with them, they must be cool", or look at a Buick ... okay wait, step back let's leave the buick's ...

Needless to say this article is completely silly to "us" slashdot types as it does not deal with issues we're familiar with. We aren't constantly trying to figure out how to use applications, we just do. We aren't constantly boggled by the inner workings of a computer, we just know. The one thing that is tough to grasp is that 98% of the people who comment on slashdot know more than 98% of the people who use computers. And that's why running an IT department is so expensive, "WE" screw them out of as much money as possible.
