Okay usually I don't reply to my post replies because usually they're AC's, but when someone has the respect to not hide behind the AC post I will usually take the time to reply to them.

Eaters of the Dead was a novel which was influenced by Beowulf and by canabilistic tribes of early men which have been documented. Like most of Crichton's works it is science fiction, but not so unbelievable because of the scientific-proof based background presented in the books.

Further there are MANY similarities to the epic and the adaptation, hell Crighton even notes that it's an interpretation in his book. I liked watching the video because it showed one thing that was true in the Epic, the Movie, and the Book. That there can be a time when a man can face fear head on and show no weakness to overcome it. It's a David and Goliath tale where the nobodty becomes a somebody.

What I think is "cool" or "enjoyable" as a movie should truly be up to me. I myself did a college project in which the epic was translated on to film encorperating organized crime (bringing a modern day feel) and light sabers (bringing a joking feel as well). Besides the horrible acting and bad script the soundtrack was quite a hit in the English class.

If you're telling me that art can be appealing to everyone, then you're sorely mistaken. I would say that I would enjoy Heaney's translation as much as you have enjoyed the thirteenth warrior. Technically unless you can read hella old english, all forms of the poem/epic have been translations.

Take my advice, accept that many people enjoy many different thigs and not everyone is going to agree with you, I have.

Obviously Tolkien was very critical of his own works as this one has been kept in a box for so long. The epic Beowulf has been depicted in so many ways in the past that it is actually quite amazing to see it translated the ways it has been. The Thirteenth Warrior was by far the coolest interpretation to date, I don't care if they did leave out nearly half the tale.

It's a timeless tale and Tolkein is a great author, this won't reach the best seller list because of the name of the author, but because I'm sure it will be great. Such a shame that it has been hidden for so long.

  3. Re:Gray hat? on New Phrack · · Score: 5, Informative
I think the one thing that people need to get out of their heads is the common misconception of a "black hat hacker or cracker". The terminology is quite specific as:

    - "sript kiddie" refers to someone with little or no maturity that uses an automated exploit scan program that makes hacks a matter of happenstance if anything else.

    - "cracker" is one step higher from a script kiddie as this is a person who actually has a target in mind, but is not randomly screening. Usually a cracker will gain access by acquring a password (hence cracker). There are many ways to do this, but the more calculated attacks are usually by a cracker that is persistent.

    - "black hat hackers" these are the guys you rarely hear about as they're main goal in life is to be where they shouldn't be and make sure that they're the only ones that know what they are doing. This is the sexiest of illegal hackers as these are the types that actually get into the "unbreakable" systems and really do know their shit. These people work for the government usually (and not just American) and some are even employed without wanting to be (part of a plea bargain). These are the type of people that you want to not be interested in your system as with a certain amount of time they will get into your system.

I'm not implying you don't know this, I was meerly trying to elaborate further on your post. And not everything these "Evil Hackers" do is all that bad. Many "script kiddie" tools are useful in testing your own systems for holes or exploits, if you have the same toys as they do, they can't beat you.

Grey hats are where most all computer type people belong, where we all usually do good, but we do know some tricks of the trade. Like an automechanic who knows how to hotwire a car or jimmy a lock open, does that make him a criminal? Same goes for anyone who is a professional locksmith (make the best theives?), doctors (make the best killers?), and bomb squad officiers (make the best bomb builders?). The joy of being a grey hat is knowing enough to protect yourself because you've been there before.

Well here's what really gets me about the MPAA and RIAA. This is an industry of complete capitalistic control (lets face it entertainment has a whole lotta money), but even more strange is that in this "dog-eat-dog" society that these groups are able to get along.

I think what everyone needs to remember is a rather funny quote "remember even your closest friend will sell you out for the price of a extra value meal". They'll go to battle destroy each other, and the bottom feeders are looking to pick up what pieces fall. Many people are still there to make great albums or movies, but in the wake of Britney Spears and NSync along with "The Hot Chick" and "Analyze That" these aren't things that will "make history" or even be remembered in 3 years, but look at Lord of The Rings or quite a few bands out there today Incubus, Foo Fighters, and many more.

People will get tired of the bullshit, and when that time comes, change will come. The MPAA and RIAA are fueled by lack of alternative entertainment, as is true for even the computer world. A valid cause indeed, just think about it, all the things people are "born with" that they can't control could simply be replaced by a stem cell with a new set of DNA and you don't have to "live" with it anymore. Kidneys not working right (diabetes etc.) grow some new ones, the possibilities of stem cell research are virtually at this time endless. Genetics can be used to heal people, it doesn't have to be used to "clone" people or "play God", if anything stem cell research is there to clean up what God screwed up (if you want to view it that way).
