I never seriously used Debian but, according to net gossip, they are one of the best distros out there. I am wondering what would be the reason for producing commercial version of Debian? POssibly Debian people want to cash on recent Linux frenzy.. which is fine with me. If VA can make so much money, surely Debian people deserve even more.
It would be nice but.... Linux greatest chance is not in desktop , MS will win there every time, it is the server side of the business that counts. So it is not WWW browsers or desktop apps that Linux needs most, it is infrastructure like ODBC that will make or breake Linux.
Nope. They did not. Where can I get source of Oracle or DB2 ?
I can't. IBM and Oracle are smart enough to realize to this whole bullshit is not workable, they do pay attention to Linux only because it slowly becomes viable business platform ( and it is considered "cool") - it has nothing to do witht his GPL madness.
Yeah.. I have used motif and I simply cannot imagine why people are still using it. Qt , for example, is so much more developer friendly and certainly not less capable than Motif.
Tons of people use J++. Of course, if you are using vi as your development tool then chances are you are not going to switch to J++ just to use MS Java.
That means OpenGL is pretty much dead as far games are concerned. No company ( with single exception of ID Software) bothers to use GL and since there will be no demand for this, I doubt hardware verndors will release GL version of their drivers and.. deadly circle is closed.
Actually, there were quite good dev tools available for Amiga. in 1987-89 the only way to get decent speed out of amiga ( specially for games ) was using ASM. There were C compilers (SAS) but most of the software (again, games) was was written using ASM and here the king was DevSoft assembler. It was quite wonderfull tool ( specially compared to assemblers available for C-64)
GTK is far simpler ?? How is that ? Last time I looked GTk is full of casts , workarounds to make C look like OO language... If you wanna talk simple , Qt is way to go ( of course, assuming one knows C++)
I was under impression that MS went out of its way to test this stuff ( I have read somewhere that they spend tons of many on usability testing and things like that.) If anyone can afford this kind of extended study I would guess it would be them.
On more practical note, I really like most of the stuff they came up with ( exception: nonresizeable dialogs, animated menus ( what a crap!!) and couple other minor thigs)
Depending what is your goal. If you do not care about Linux being viable desktop platform for "the people" then sure, KDE means nothing to you, on the other hand, KDE is just another option and being Unix guy you surely shoudn't have any problems replacing it with something that suits you better ( even if eventually all the major distribution come with KDE as default desktop.)
Anybody noticed that anytime company is in trouble and specially as a result of direct competition with MS, they think that embracing OS will somehow help them... I don't think so... They are commercial company and have to play by commercial rules. We are yet to see OS company make the kind of money to become significant player in the computer industry...
hehe.. you are right.
But who cares, if KDE is superior it will at the end of the day no matter how mych FUD MDI spreads around.

So you have something against white males ??
It is fucking fashionable to be proud of this these days, isn't ?

OK. Watch VMWare GPL their software, and right after that, watch them go out of business.
Please explain, how in the world VMware would make money out of GPLed version of their product ?
Briliant. It was probably the best name ever created for a computer.
Where the heck did you get this info about IIS being partialy implemented in NT kernel ?
That's complete bullcrap .
Heheeh .. ... ...
Grits boys are getting more and more sophisticated
I like em

"The truth is that the part of The Open Group that was responsible for X (and Motif, and OSF/1, and DCE) is gone and buried.
.. nobody ?/
"
Now.. that's reasurring .
So whos's developing this stuff now ?? Everybory and

Where did you get that "insider" information ?

Dude, how about "giving away books does not mean that the publisher will shirvel up and die " ?
At least you could have provided some example how the heck giving away product is supposed to enhance SGIs bottom line ?

I used it a lot.

Linux is not superior to anything with exception of Windows 95/98. It is _different_ then NT and not as robust as Solaris or other commercial Unices.
... I much more prefere VSlickEdit.
Gimp is very fine for OS app but it still has ways to go before can be considered _complete_ replacement for Photoshop.
Emacs ?? Matter of opinion

There would be a problem if future KDe apps required Konqueror to be installed the way MS tools require IE. ...
I guess, will just have to wait and see

Well, in Europe you guys don't have guns - instead , every 50 years you simply decide to make it up in one big "event".
Sorry.
You are right about my poor choice of words.

"Linux Myths" is actully true for the most part.
YOu would be hard pressed to contradict any of the points MS is making in that paper.
