i think Turbine DDO and frogster Rom are pretty decent examples of what works, you dont get any epic gear for cash, but you don't have to grind for standard items, and you can get faster lvling potions, containers and improved running speed (mounts etc) for real cash ... to me it's pretty well balanced. they both can use a lot more content tho, but then, can't we all :) I've been playing DDO (casually) for about a year now and so far i paid 150 euros (about) on content and extra character classes. That's about the same as a subscription i guess, diff. being, i almost have all content xept a few high level packs and they don't whip out new zones every month so after 2 years it gets cheaper(ish?) i like the game very much anyway, on a personal note

The player uses the original client (the client contains all the graphics, character and mob models, sfx and so on) The private server software (as far as i know) is developed by few hakzor teams who know their bits and bytes pretty well. Thus : the player is actually the one who gets to decide wether he/she infringes copyright or not. You can download any wow-iso anywhere, just like you can download anything else anywhere. You just install wow from your cds/dvds like you would when you pay blizz and connect to their servers but before you start it up you edit one (maybe two) configuration files so the program connects to a different ip. The software used for the server however is (that's what they claim) not a copy of what blizzard is running on their wowhardwarefarm so, i guess it's a bit of a twilight zone. People charging money for warez however ... i can see how that is bound to go wrong. I don't know how i know all this, perhaps i used to spend too much time on shady irc channels

I'm not going hippiecrite here but i would also like to question the legality of some copyright claims and repeat the fact that whoever gets downloaded the most probably also sells the most copies of his or her POPular product. I feel really sorry for Lars if he has to wait another month for his new swimming pool, but hypothetically speaking, if i would know where to find these criminals, i'd be happy to use their services because i'm a huge fan of that band Try before you Buy. 90% of games is crap, 90% of movies is crap. Are there any statistics on how many lady Gaga songs were downloaded over the last year? Does she look hungry to you? No, she's not even skinny. Do Hollywood movie companies make losses because of piracy or because of their own constructs to evade taxes ? Did Turbine go bankrupt since their flagship went free to play? Will Lotro stick to the old business model and sue its customer base instead of adapting? On moral grounds i say the big companies are the wrong doers here, on legal grounds ofcourse, he who writes the law is always right, right? I hope the day comes sooner when these hogs see that all the money spent on lawsuits is in fact money wasted, money that could have been used to develop new ways of making money or adapting their old companies to compete with the new ones who are customer-friendly (giving out a product and then letting people decide if they WANT to pay for it, i say that's pretty customer friendly) Then again, like someone above here said, who cares? from a very interesting explanation by mister Brian Cox is that just mapping what's out there is not enough by far. We get saved from a lot of deepspace attacks (we all know the giant bugs are responsible ofcourse) by our huge nephews Saturn and Jupiter, who sit quietly closer to the outskirts of our solar system, attracting a lot of 'space debris' into the rings, or into orbit. BUT, they are also responsible for changing the trajectory of objects that happen to be fast and/or massive enough to escape their gravitational pull. I'm no supercomputer, and i dont think we have enough observatories to even try and calculate probability on risks like that but it does seem very possible that one of those pre-pre-pre-historic spacboulders could just get launched towards our blue planet. If it's big enough to survive the friction fight with our atmosphere, it could be big enough to cause some major damage. Big, what is big? Well if our earth fits into the red spot on Jupiter, which is (supposedly just a storm) then i suppose something REALLY big could get into the slingshot and if our cousin feels nasty, we might end up with more than just broken glass ...
