I just took the quiz and it said I could take 15 five year olds in a fight. However, I do have some experience with this.
I was in Cambodia a few years ago visiting the ruins of a temple (the one where part of "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" was filmed) and as I was leaving I was approached by a little boy about five years old who was selling t-shirts. I offered to buy a few and I was immediately swarmed by about 10 - 15 kids wanting to sell me t-shirts, bottled water, tour books, etc.
If they had wanted to I'm sure they could have knocked me down and kicked my ass. Luckily my guide saw what was happening and ran them off. My guide told me they aren't afraid of tourists because we're reluctant to hurt children. That's not necessarily the case with the locals.
In fedora 14, whatever was slowing down Gnome with NVidia graphics has been resolved over several updates and I am not even sure which updates corrected the problem.
I believe they backed out a change in the Cairo 2D libraries that was causing the problem.
You take a snapshot of quotes around 1776 and you think that proves your point? Don't you think things might have changed a teensy bit since 1776?
In the almost 235 years since the U.S. was founded the only "army" that has attacked anyone inside the U.S. was the Confederate MILITIA! It's a good thing the ARMY was there to stop them.
And if you think you still need a "militia" to protect yourself from the evil U.S. army you should take a look at how much violence has been committed on American soil by the U.S. Army vs how much has been perpetrated by Confederate and individual militia groups in the name of "freedom".
After 235 years it seems the militias are the greater threat. You really need to go back and re-read your history. The history books are full of this stuff.
Some of the deficiencies you point out are no longer the case. COBOL has evolved a lot in the last 25 years including getting rid of the punch card format.
Don't get me wrong, I'd rather not program in it but it's no where near the horror it used to be. I agree it's unlikely anyone would create a new application in COBOL but there is a lot of business rules and knowledge coded in the millions of COBOL applications out there and there's no reason and no cost justification for throwing it all away.
I hate it when people jump in the end of a train of posts and don't bother to find out what their commenting on. But then again, since not reading the article is a badge of honour around here I guess it's not surprising.
Do you walk in on a conversation in a bar and start spouting off about how wrong people are before you find out you have no idea what you're talking about? If so, you must get your ass kicked a lot.
If you bothered to go back to the beginning of the conversation you would have found out that the "redaction" you're commenting on is not the removal of a book (which is not a redaction) but Amazon's retroactive editing of their statement for the "accidental" removal of George Orwell's 1984 from customer's Kindles (which is most definitely a redaction).
Did you know 70% of all rapes go unreported? Could just be the first time someone spoke up.
Since unreported rapes are UNREPORTED there is no scientific way to know what the actual percentage is so I'll say it's 10%. Just as valid as your 70%.
I also hear 50 of all murders, 80% of all thefts and 99% of all Justin Bieber bashing go unreported.
FYI, he is charged with "consensual, unprotected sex", he allegedly refused to wear a condom, which may be illegal in Sweden which has the strictest sexual assault laws but wouldn't even get past the sniff test in most other countries let alone justify an INTERPOL man hunt. Roman Polanski admitted to drugging and sodomizing an underage girl and even he didn't get this kind of attention.
Lets see how the case turns out before we string him up.
Sorry, in my attempt to be clever I was unintentionally vague. That'll teach me.
I was responding to the AC, who seemed to imply that code editors that eliminated the need to pay attention to the minutia of syntax created bad or lazy coders.
My point was that automating the details of the coding allows more focus on the work and speeds up the "edit/save/compile/curse syntax error" development cycle of ye olde days. Or even worse, the "punch program on cards/wait for available card reader/scan cards/curse card out of order" development cycle of ye really olde days (I still have nightmares).
Doesn't anyone research prior art anymore? They hardly invented or discovered a new idea.
Try the IBM 7090 desk console.
That's as close to being prior art as the first caveman who realized that when he got to the corner of the cave he could keep painting on the next wall. Rotate 90 degrees and there is your prior art...literally.
If Ballmer is soon to get dumped from the top spot at Microsoft it is bad news for Linux and Apple whoever replaces him can't possibly do any worse than Ballmer's disastrous decade at the helm.
I wouldn't bet on that. I hear Darl McBride is looking for a job.
If Mozilla is bored, they can try making less bloated Firefox.
Of course the irony is that Firefox (formerly Phoenix) was created as a response to the bloated Mozilla suite.
Creeping featurism is a common problem which contributes to the bloat of any sufficiently successful piece of software. Whether it's to justify/extort upgrade fees or, in the case of open source, to maintain their success, it's the natural course of most large, complex software projects.
Not really. Advertising boosts sales, which means the manufacturing cost per item drops, so the net result is an increase in profit.
There, fixed that for you.
I agree that in theory that's how it's supposed to work. At least, that's what I learned in 1st year Economics.
In the real world businesses keep prices the same unless there is enough competition to force them to reduce prices. And that is, only if the competition isn't also greedy. You only have to look as far as the drug, cable and cell phone companies for typical examples.
What do you think you're doing bringing a rational, informed statement into a Slashdot discussion. You didn't even bother to make a overly simplistic car analogy.
If we can't make fun of/rail against wildly inaccurate article summaries then what's the point of it all.

No. It makes the electorate insane.
You get the government you want.
The electorate doesn't matter. Regardless of who we vote for we get the government the corporations and lobbyists want.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.
Mhm... we have this new thing called databases, you know?
Its revolutionary....
Databases have been on mainframes since the 60's, you know?
It's not revolutionary...

My comment should be taken in the context of the post I was responding to.
To clarify my statement read my response to Carrot007 above.

I think we'd have to agree we all have a bit of hero and a bit of villain in us.
And apparently when visiting Sweden it's best to keep your villain in your pants.
Actually, auto-casing teaches that syntax is not as important as accomplishing the task at hand quickly and efficiently.

I just hope the camera doesn't have the dreaded 'Apple Battery Replacement Plan' that requires you to send it in to get the battery replaced.
Or worse...I hope he didn't use a Sony laptop battery. He could wind up with a lot more than a headache.
Satan has a twin sister?
...and she's HOT!
She's a good sheila and not at all stuck up.

It's not just the TSA. I had the same experience during a Tokyo stopover on an Air Canada flight from Hong Kong to Toronto.
I just read 2 articles. I invite them to hire a Canadian lawyer to come after me.

He could call it The Flintstone Flyer.
It doesn't matter that it's 25% paid for by the ISP and 75% by the content owners it will eventually be 100% passed on to the consumer.
