I want my kids to stop downloading porn and get back to playing quake and learning how to shoot people properly, like every red blooded american ought to.
I don't know what exactly it is called, I'm not an accountant either but I was informed that it was new for this year and it specifically applied to Internet purchases.
This year, in my home state of Ohio, the legislation introduced a "Voluntary" tax on Interenet purchases. That is, I can tell them that I purchased X amount of books online and they'll tax me accordingly.
Even though this tax is "Voluntary" I have been informed by my accountant that I have to pay this tax, reguardless. Thereby, my state is taxing purchases that were made "out of state" as it were.
My question is, how do you feel about taxation of the internet, specifically "Voluntary" ones like the State of Ohio has implemented?
After enough planes crashed in the '50s, he points out, investigators stopped blaming it all on pilot error and insisted that designers start making cockpits easier to understand. You'd think we'd learn.
Er... I really thought the reason why less planes crash now was because of technology, not because of "Cockpit ease of use". I mean, they gotta be trained for the cockpit right? And I am not a pilot, but I think the older style airplane controls were simpler. I've seen the cockpit of a modern jet plane and it didn't look simple to me..
You know, back when I had a 386 with a 150 meg hard drive and a 2400 baud modem, I would have thought that mp3 was pretty useless, since it would take hours to download one song, and then you'd have to decompress it ahead of time, and really, who'd want to store all that data for casual use?
Remember, it is not about what is, it's about what will be.

In no way was I trying to justify the actions of the Scientologists, I was merely examining the paths that many religions take to mature. Its like standing back and watching history repeat itself all over again, thats all.:)
And this is exactly my problem with this mess. In my everyday life I have no problem with people's religions. I work in a very multicultural organization, there's so many different religious groups here, I'd have a hard time counting them all.
But I think, as this country was founded on the principles of religious freedom, (ideally) that there is nothing wrong with that. I won't badmouth someone for worshiping whatever they want to worship, even if I think its kinda silly.
And to be fair, a lot of religions are "evil" to someone. And as a matter of fact the things you listed that the scientologists do to their opponents aren't too different from what other religions have done in the past. NOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!!!
Heck, one religion killed the leader of another one by nailing him to a cross. Though some might prefer that to being litigated to death, but I digress.
The point I'm trying to get at is, Scientology is just doing what any other religion has done in the past, its trying to protect itself. But its unpopular, so we get away with saying things like what I said. Which, I must admit, was wrong. I may believe that Scientology is false, but I shouldn't berate them for believing how they want to believe.
This is, after all, the land thats free from religious persecution right? Right. *sigh*
I mean, how can a website like slashdot hope to fight the good fight against a bunch of brainwashed zealots who'se religion is to take as much money as they can from their members.
Stupid scientology.
Oh by the way, until it gets deleted here's a good link to the evils of the Church of Scientology: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Secrets/index.html
Just for the record, NCR isn't National Cash Register anymore. It stopped being that when AT&T bought the company and turned National Cash Register into AT&T GIS. When AT&T let NCR be it's own company again in 1997 it became NCR again, but no where is it called National Cash Register.
I think it would be fun if they changed it to NCR Causes Recursion.
Oh, and for an old-school company that can't keep up, NCR sure employs a lot of people here in Dayton Ohio, my hometown.
Well... I mean its open source as in you can go to the IRS and ask them for the tax code laws and they will give them to you.
But as far as software like turbotax? This is one area where I don't think you'll find an open source equivilant (though I could be wrong). The thing is, tax code is so friggin complicated, a small error in your code could trigger an audit. And as all taxpayers know, thats the last thing you want.
So there's doing it yourself on paper, taking it to an accountant, or using a $20 piece of software.
Personally, I prefer an accountant, because they think of things that even the software misses, and usually they more than pay for themselves in the money they save me. Last year before I took my taxes in, I did them as best I could using turbo tax, then I took the same figures to the accountant. Badda bing, The accountant had me paying almost $200 less than turbo tax would have had me pay. And since it was a national tax service I don't think they are going to get me audited.
Okay, I would like to second the thoughts of having no sports/no smoking in a geek bar. Not so much because I personally detest sports (though I do smoking) but because if you have Sports in there you're likely to turn into another sports bar and get those guys in there and I'll split.
Well, all sports except for maybe Robot Wars or something.:)
Honestly, and this may be old fashioned and too geeky, I'd like to see stuff like chess tournaments going on. Yes I'm *that* kind of a nerd.
That network trivia stuff though is kinda fun, and if you get a good mix of geeks in your bar would likely kill other bars on the network, and that would be really fun.
Hmm, no, I still don't see what it has to do with computers, just Scientology and Copyright stuff. But if you point out the computer stuff I'll admit I'm wrong.
How is CPRM going to keep people from copying stuff?
I mean, I just don't understand it, it's been explained to me several times, but my thought is, if my PC can figure out how to execute the code, I can figure out how to copy it. Its just a thought, so if I'm wrong, enlighten me.:)
A horde of lightning bugs all grab their asses in terror.
You mean the I Kiss You guy wasn't real?
Damn. And I was hoping to go visit him and stay his house.
Well honestly, the high school I went to was fairly poor, we were still using Apple ]['s when I graduated in 1993.
Still didn't stop them from having a multi-million dollar gymnasium built though...

Maybe I missed the point, it's happened before.
The only way I will believe you is if your grandpa told you in a bar, thats the only valid reference for anything, really... ;)
Most video cards have a TV out these days, not so hard to run a cable from the PC to the TV if you want to watch a movie.
Or you could just have them there on your hard drive to queue up in half screen or 1/4th screen mode when you're doing something else...
The possibilities are endless...
Who is the umaine.edu to argue with the unix fortune file? Hmm?

All this talk about mediums and shrinks has confused me... I don't know if I need to see a Psychic or a Psycologist.
RIAA: Here is a list of 150,000 songs that we want you to block. You have 3 days.
*THUD*
Napster Admin: OK.
*2 days later, Napster Admin wakes up from a hangover*
Napster Admin: That was some party, hey? Oh shit. The RIAA thing. Holy Mother of Perl! I don't want to mess with typing or OCRing all that in!

Who wants a paper phone anyway?
Now a shoe phone... thats a useful thing that I've yet to be able to buy.
Please some slashdot user point me to where I can buy a shoe phone, I really want one. Just so I can do this one:

I'm with everyone else...
Who cares?
What the hell has this to do with anything that a geek should care about?
Or are we going to change this site to:
litigatedot
News for Lawyers. Stuff that we can sue.
Posers.
I wrote a poker game with a rudimentary AI (granted it sucked) on a Casio 7700G. Now that was some limited hardware.
