ok, this was probably the most confused and useless post I ever made here. Time for a day off. Just dont even try to get my point, it could cause serious braindamage.;-)
Actually my sig is kinda outdated. What I do now is provide them with Firefox, OO.org, and Thunderbird (or even Audacity, Gimp and Gaim). Most are actually delighted to get rid of crappy shareware and broken "warez". Firefox is a real dooropener to opensource. I just blows IE away and people get addicted to banning ads with a rightclick or tabbrowsing. It gives them a good feeling too since most of my friends KNOW about opensource but haven't been techsavvy enough to administrate their own Linuxbox (yes, I sometimes turn my cellphone off). When they finally make the switch all their favourite apps are already waiting for them on their Linux Desktop!
Next stop Dropline Gnome but no need to rush things, here!;-)
About a year ago I wrote a petition to the bavarian primeminister because I wanted to learn about his position about software patents since I was planning on voting him and didn't like the idea of beeing in the dark about a vital aspect for my business. Believe it or not, after three days I got a response from an actual person (!). Sadly the response told me that their party didn't favour any particular Operating System (Linux or Windows) since they believed in the forces of a free market. OK! He must have gotten confused about the ongoing campaign about Linux in my hometown munich or something but I hadn't asked him that. It was totally obvious that he had absolutely no idea about software patents and simply assumed it had to be related to that linuxthingy he heard about.
I wrote another response to clear up the misunderstanding but never got an answer. I still voted him since the other party offered an even worse outlook. Well, here we go! Sometimes it's just not funny to live in a democracy.
As a german citizen I am really angry that this happend although there was an intelligent debate. Seems like the big cash won over the judges. I am deeply concerned about what this means for the german software industry.
The sad part is that I believe that most of the propatent folks really believed that they are doing the software firms a favour and helping local developers up on their feet again. The Irony! The only thing that will probably happen is that the bigshots (i.e. Microsoft and the like) will further dominate the market instead of, growing, newcomers that could produce the next big thing and create jobs instead of outsorcing.;-/
You are seriously right. I used to take flying lessons and when I was on my ride home from the airport I was really amazed how two dimensional driving is. It's actually kinda weird to lack a third dimension when you got used to it.
Fromt he article: "You know, the computer that is now taking over the planet thanks to the iPod"
Ok, come on, maybe the iPod is a pretty successful device but apple has never been further away from world market share in terms of desktop computers than it is now. With cheapo Windows machines and Linux on the other side they had to come up with a success. The iPod might have saved their lives but world domination is waaaay out of reach.
I work for the company that worked as the technologypartner for Lufthansa (Burda Digital) and it's great to see that this is literally taking off finally. I wasn't directly affected to it but still it makes me proud that this story made it to Slashdot.;-)

Actually I think about the poor quality as a new form of art. The pics from my Nokia7250 may not be great from a photographers perspective but they give me the ability to spice up stuff on my homepage. Personally I like the weird colors and built in blur that the pics show off.;-)
Btw: Here's my "moblog", more pics here. Please feel free to ignore the mistakes in the lyrics. I am german and not a native speaker!;-)
All would be well if Nvidia was playing nice and opensource it's drivers. It is not the kernels fault in this issue. It's a shame that Nvidia doesn't get it...
You may be right but there are a lot of things that the rover wants to inspect beforehand, the heatshield for example that touched down just a few hundred meters away. They will go down eventually even if the rover might get stuck but not before they visited some targets ontop of the crater.
Well, this in a very early state. I can remember that EADS has been planning on a reentry vehicle for years so this will turn into a shuttle sometime, it's a really big company and the project is funded by european governments. This test might not look too spectacular in itself but it shows that they are finally making reallife tests of their concept and probably they were just testing a small part of the shuttles tech. Most of the stuff you need for a shuttle can be tried and approved on the ground I assume. But the landing system should need some testflights and this is what you were seeing.
This is news? Well, there are many ways to run Microsoft Office on Linux. Wine is great. It works. Sometimes. Everyone has seen it before. It's all just mediahype and no meat.
This is the same lame attempt that Lindows (or what's it called today) tried and failed miserably.
yeah cool! huh? ;-)

If they keep buying those huge sums of harddisks for their racks they might as well be a way to get cheaper harddisks. ;-)
If you are running Slackware you can find a codecpack for xine here.

Yeah, I had the same experience after a 2day bender when I got home in the morning. Couldn't stand daylight without glasses...
You have to be root though. ;-)
Make sure you are root:
Wait until you hear my music! ;-P

To be picky, even the source of solar energy is limited. But this shouldn't worry us I guess! ;-)
