I was thinking the exact same thing. Right now as I am typing it wouldn't really matter if I use my beige PC or my 1Ghz cellphone. With WiFi, Bluetooth, Wireless USB and all this stuff it should be easy to build something like that. Heck, the phone could just be another part of it. You could build a central server in your flat (maybe another smaller one in your car) that holds all your huge files and liferecords (the next big thing, if I understand future right) and the cellphone just sucks down what you want to have on the go, mp3s, documents, mails, pics, whatever). This way you could really integrate this stuff and not have to deal with the performance and interface shortcomings. Security WILL be an issue and standards will be another. That's why I think open standards are that important.

  7. Age and Evolution on Engineering An End to Aging · · Score: 2, Interesting

As pointed out by Richard Dawkins in his brilliant book The selfish gene death of age is nothing more than just a spinoff of evolution. The bar of age just seems to be there because people were able to reproduce already and that fact alone makes genes successful that might proof fatal inside older bodies.

If we would reproduce beyond the age of 80 then evolution would HAVE to select the genes that are vital for longevity (is this the word? german here.). He also claims that it would be theoretically possible to raise the bar by passing a law that would forbid reproduction before the age of 40, then 50 and so on. Of course this is utopical but if you look at it it makes pretty much sense...

Personally I am a devoted Slackware user but right now I am migrating my mom to Fedora Core2.
It's a nice system with not much overhead in the default install. You have to tweak it a bit but you can have a solid platform wich is easy to use for all daily office tasks such as browsing, printing letters and so on.

RedHats Bluecurve theme doesn't match my taste but it works great for mom and dad since it's clean and descriptive. It's also an up to date system with Kernel 2.6.5 and Gnome 2.6.
Like it or not but spatial filenavigation is the ONLY way my mom is able to keep her stuff together. She was totally lost with Windows Explorer.

One has to keep in mind that Fedora is a pretty young project, too and that there was apparently some trouble in the community communication with RedHat. The booting issue is a real pita but let's not forget that it is actually a WinXP problem. This won't make anyone more happy if he lost his Windows partition, I know but it's still the truth. So let's not be too harsh with Fedora!

Sorry to hear this. I would advise you to install Slackware 9.1, upgrade to Slackware current with a tool such as swaret or slaptget and then install Dropline gnome. (www.dropline.net, sorry I am using a Sony Playstation keyboard that is having a hard time providing keys one needs to type html so no link here. ;-))

Actually if you don't have any real reasons to use Slack current you can just use a stock Slack9.1 installation but I highly encourage you to try Dropline Gnome since it's really fun and the best Linux Desktop I came across so far. The next Slackware release should be just around the corner so if you don't mind to wait a month or so you might just get what you need in a nice ready to go package.

    Good luck,

  22. IF it boots at all! on Fedora Core Doesn't Like to Dual Boot? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Hah! It doesn't even boot at all on quite a few machines. I was trying to install it on my Via Epia M board and all I got "Uncompressing kernel Image....OK" and an instant rebbot. I searched around a bit and it seems that I am not the only one with this issue. On my other box it booted into the textmode installer but didn't detect the Installation-CD wich seemed to be ok.

There are known incompatibilities with some ASUS boards but it seems there are more boards affected. I am really disappointed since I wanted to review Core2 for a german Linux magazine and I am in trouble now. It looks like I will have to test it on another box but I will also have to tell my audience about the installation trouble.

Very sad since Core1 looked pretty promising and I had high hopes for Core2.
