  2. My low-tech solution... on What To Do With All of My Gadget Chargers? · · Score: 1

I have a similar problem. I keep it under control by keeping the cords bundled up and secured with twist ties--often the original ties that come with the charger. I only let the cords out enough to be useful. I have a power strip with one or two usable outlets on top of my desk, where I plug in the charger I need to use at the moment. All of the other chargers go into a plastic popcorn tub that sits under my desk. Keeping the cords bundled keeps them from getting tangled up with each other too much.

On the DS, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl both ping the Wi-Fi connection when starting up, to look for a nearby Wii running Pokemon Battle Revolution. There's no way to suppress this that I know about, but it's a pretty brief occurrence anyway.

Keep in mind, the Canadian dollar is also somewhat weaker now than it was at the time the PS3 launched. The difference could be entirely attributable to currency fluctuations.

I guess we'll never know, but I have this perverse feeling that the HGA will finally deploy as Galileo plummets into the denser layers of the Jovian atmosphere. (The spacecraft is being dropped into Jupiter at the end of its mission in order to eliminate the possibility that it might eventually crash into one of the Galilean satellites and contaminate it with terrestrial microorganisms.)

  7. Wild horses couldn't drag me into the clinic on Laser Vision Surgery for Developers? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I've worn glasses for myopia full-time since my ninth birthday. I turn 40 in just a few months. Sure, glasses are a pain sometimes, but they work well for me. I've had the same prescription for over twelve years; it still corrects my vision to 20/15.

I'm a programmer/analyst by trade. There is no bloody way I am going to risk my vision on a wacky, unnatural invasive procedure like LASIK. I don't care how good the surgeon is or how minimal the risk is. With my luck, I'd end up being one of the poor souls whose eyesight has been permanently and irretrievably screwed by this procedure.

No, thanks--I'll keep my glasses and my eyesight. To the daredevils out there, I only have one thing to say:

    Good luck.

  8. Re:"Early" Piers Anthony on Talk To Xanth Creator Piers Anthony · · Score: 1

I'm 39 and haven't picked up a book by Anthony since I finished Bio of a Space Tyrant years ago. I just can't read his stuff anymore, and I've read a lot of it, old and new. Orn/Ox/Omnivore, Tarot, Chthon, Macroscope, Battle Circle... if you ask me, it's been mostly downhill since Macroscope. The Apprentice Adept series was a decent read... when I was 19. Incarnations of Immortality started very well and later seemed to collapse under its own weight. And don't get me started about the Xanth novels... blah!

I guess I grew tired of the cutesy word play, the gratuitous T&A, and last but not least, the rampant overuse of exclamation marks in his writing. Surely Mr. Anthony deserves some kind of Lifetime Achievement Award for Exclamation Mark Use!

What data has the array been populated with? If it's an auto array, I presume that it contains random stack contents. That being the case, how can you say anything about the relative performance of the C and C++ versions, if you can't guarantee that each program even sorts the same data?

  10. Re:Great news for civilization fans? on Loki Porting Alpha Centauri, Sim City 3k and More · · Score: 1
Well, first of all: Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (SMAC) didn't reach retail stores until February, 1999--so it hasn't even been out for a year, yet. I don't know how long the Linux port will take, but I have to think that Loki is getting the process down to a science--and as SMAC doesn't do anything particularly exotic with your hardware, it shouldn't be a complicated port.

By the way, don't hold your breath for Civ 3, on any platform. I wouldn't expect to see the Windows version before spring of 2001 at the earliest.

Last, a delay of a year or more between SMAC's initial release and the appearance of a Linux port will not necessarily translate into a similar delay for a Civ 3 port. There's nothing to say that Loki couldn't reach some agreement to fast-track a Linux port, especially if the SMAC port is successful--but keep in mind that Civ 3 will be published by Hasbro/Microprose, and not Electronic Arts, which published SMAC. Hasbro might have different ideas about Linux products. By their actions in the past, Hasbro has projected the image of a stodgy, traditional, play-it-safe operation. It's possible that there might not be a Linux port of Civ 3 at all.
