you shouldn't need to have a process always running to make an application start up faster. openoffice is one low piece of software when it starts, but i didn't see a reason to have an extra process running all the time when i wasn't using the software all the time... i'm back to MS office now and it's a whole lot better...
there are a few different types of "lojack" for computers. the software is hidden, although those in the know can find it and remove it (supposedly it sits there through reformats). hwoever, it requires that the machine end up on the internet at some point. that's how they track it.
back in the day, album releases were about more than just the music. the album art was a big thing. look at albums by pink floyd and the beatles (sgt pepper). the liner notes were also big and on occasion contained extras (think beatles white ablum). of course this was when they were vinyl. however, they can do the same thing with cd's.
that's part of the reason i buy cd's. the other part is because if they're DRM free, they're probably the most open and highest quality format to get music in these days (dvd-a isn't widely available enough for me).
slander away... israel is full of as many terrorists as palestine and iraq... they just happen to be our allies so we won't admit to it. and because jews hold so many high places in our country (like all of hollywood), we won't go against what israel is doing either... we'll just watch them continue in their terrorist ways and fund it too.
i'm not anti-semitic or anything, in fact, i have jewish relatives. i just disagree with israeli politics. i'll even sign my name to this one...
aol works for some people. they just don't care how much it costs and they don't see why something else is better.
you can't use the "gmail is for true geeks" mentality anymore since it's now free to use for anyone with a cell phone (which means EVERY dumb college student) and hardly makes you special. there are some people with aol addresses who are actually quite savvy, but that's what their parents pay for.
it comes down to this... there's absolutely no reason aol should be charging to be added to their whitelist and blocking any domains that don't pay.
monopoly over something that's free to use and make changes to? i think you need to explain a bit more...
at least in the linux world, there could be something new and better, and those linux users who don't like what google's doing can just use some other distro. those that do can stick with google. and those who don't know much about anything, it probably doesn't really matter. google has been pretty good at staying on top of the new cool stuff. i'd be all over that.
aren't google's servers all running linux? aren't they all heavily modified customized? does google ever go down? sounds like they've got some good software and hardware engineers working for them... i think they know what they're doing.
it's not a lie if there was a benchmark that showed their product twice as fast. it's hard for microsoft to say "twice as fast" when microsoft is not a hardware company.
i'm not saying apple's a wonderful company, hell, i use ms products almost exclusively, and i don't even own an ipod (or any mp3 player). but i have seen other companies in the past promote their products as [insert multiplier here] fast, efficient, etc. and it's not exclusive to tech companies. automakers, appliance makers, etc... they've all done it. but it's not a lie because it is true, but only if you take one test into consideration. it's not completely open and honest about their product, but they don't have to be. there's a reason people read magazines like consumer reports before making a major purchase.
Believe it or not, MS antispyware will pick up stuff that adaware, spybot, and webroot leave behind. Even if you don't want to use it, you can't do wrong by installing, updating, scanning, then uninstalling when done. MooSoft's The Cleaner and Bazooka can also help you remove persistent trojans.
you may also like to know that those other programs also find stuff that MS antispyware leaves behind. it's a good assumption that each anti-spyware program finds something that the others do not with a lot of overlapping.
normally i wouldn't respond to a post that used no thought, but that advice is some of the best advice you can give most recent grads.
think about it... most parents love their kids. if they know their kids are in a position of unhappiness, they'll help them out. this guy is obviously unhappy and needs money desperately. if he moves in with his parents, they'll probably allow him to stay for a while without paying any sort of rent and they'll feed him. in exchange, he just has to help out around the house (i've been there). he won't have to worry as much about working long hours to make ends meet and he'll be able to take time to update his resume, post it to job sites and setup interviews.
i speak from personal experience. i've been there. living at home after graduating while i did my real job search and worked shitty jobs was the best thing i could have done for myself. now i have an apartment of my own in a great city with an awesome job.
after reading it a second time i came to the conclusion that maybe he just doesn't really want a new job. he needs weekends for down time and cooling off... but if you really want the other job, you put in the effort.
he mentions how he's doing 2 different jobs without any sort of extra compensation but the overtime. maybe he should take it up with teh boss. maybe it would be cheaper for the boss to hire someone else at a lower pay rate than to be paying him all the overtime.
he says he's a recent grad... find a roommate, move into a cheaper apartment, don't go out drinking, don't spend money to have fun. if that's what your friends do, let them. if you can, move back in with your parents. i doubt you're tied down with family stuff being a recent grad. spread your chores out over the course of the evenings. laundry, dishes, cleaning, etc can all be done over time. hell, i haven't cleaned my apartment really well in months, but i pick up and vacuum every now and then. and i have lots of free time.
if you really want the job, you'll put in the extra effort and give up some of the quality of life crap and just deal with it until you find a new job. otherwise, you will have to learn to suck it up and deal with teh status quo. the words are harsh, but that's really what it comes down to.
are you saying that raid has a bigger chance of failing on a SATA drive than SCSI?
i'm confused...
also, the guy with the question mentioned that at most, there will be 50 concurrent connections, and the place only has 100 employees. i've run labs and had well over 50 machines connecting to a single symantec ghost server... no raid, standard ATA. no trouble (yes, i realize they don't connect and transfer large amounts of data all the time like a fileserver). if he was really worried about speed, i'm sure SCSI would be the answer. SCSI is pretty old technology... modern hard drives are pretty robust (i'd put the best ATA or SATA drive up against the best SCSI drive, i bet they'd both last just as long). the only real difference is speed, and i bet his users won't notice much difference with SATA. and if, per chance, a drive fails, it's a cheaper to replace that SATA drive than a SCSI drive. and don't tell me SCSI drives don't fail.
actually, you can get some pretty good prices from some of the electronics stores in NYC... and they're reputable as well. so don't go knocking all the NYC area electronics dealers...
funny, i've seen team america unrated, american pie unrated, that new jet li movie unrated, and many others taht said "unrated" on the shelves of my local hollywood video (i believe i saw them when i was at blockbuster recently as well). now the unrated american pie isn't bad (boobies, whoop dee doo), but the team america with the extended sex scene featuring "watersports" and poop was pretty bad... i don't know about the jet li movie, i'm not a fan of that type of movie.
and what about all those blatantly sexual movies that you see mixed in with the new releases? the ones with the cheesey titles...
why woudl a company run a credit check on an applicant? i believe that's an invasion of privacy. what does my financial situation have to do with my job performace for the company? asking about previous salaries is one thing, but running a credit check? that's bull as is drug screening, especially since you can detect THC long after a person has used it. and so what if they smoke pot? does what they do in their own time affect their work ethic? no way.
so they're not really protecting anything and probably firing some of the best employees simply because they failed a drug test or had poor credit.
microsoft's antispyware is also one of the best free products i use... since i do this a lot, i use adaware, spybot, and ms antispyware. they all find something the others don't. couple that with hijackthis and the machine is 98% clean when i'm done, unless there's something that still runs in safemode, which i generally just remove using bartpe.
someone's always selling bootlegs. walk into almost any independent record store. they sell them. they look like actual albums, but don't have the record label on them and usually have the date of the show on them.
the way to combat this is to go after the record store (which sucks because some of these are the best record stores).
i'm curious too... although barlow did say that he had a heated discussion with bobble over the issue. i'm willing to be that he wanted the music taken down.

what software/hardware company has not made misleading comments based on one benchmark to make it sound like their newer product is so much better?
oh wait, this is slashdot, where companies are evil and we should all be using linux because it's much better in every situation.
i am an IT worker. before my promotion, i was paid hourly and made time and a half for overtime.

i think more people need to take turtle shells and squids to the go-karts, it'd break up the monotony a bit.

you must've missed that part of my post... that practice stopped eventually.
but yes, that's where those sbd copies came from, however, those aren't even the quality that an official sbd is.
bobby grew up loaded... it was only a matter of time before he started seeing $$$ again.
