If they don't agree to the music industries terms they can't sell music. How does that help the fight against DRM. Being a hugely popular player/store in the world of online music advocating against DRM plays a more important role than just abandoning the market. steve jobs posting a little thing on apple's website so the all the apple fanboys can look at it and say "see? apple isn't evil." is nothing more than a PR stunt. when steve jobs starts actively campaigning for and pushing the record companies for the end of DRM, then i'll think it's anything more. he's perfectly happy with his itunes/ipod lock-in. his statistics are bunk because most music on ipods was either ripped from a CD or illegally acquired (P2P or other means). itunes is the largest retailer of downloadable music. steve can easily push the record companies to, at the very least, allow him to license fairplay to other devices (which the record companies allow for playsforsure). he can even go one step further and push for them to allow him to sell DRM-free music. again, both of these options affect his lock-in and he's unwilling to allow for that.
posting this little diatribe on his company's website allows him to look all nice and anti-DRM, when, in reality, he's not doing anything active to fight the use of DRM. if he cared, he'd fight it.
you're also forgetting that books suck to read on a computer screen and even on a PDA, it's not that great because it's generally smaller.
and comparing downloading movies for free with reading a book at barnes and noble for free is apples and oranges. your time is limited in BN, while your time is unlimited downloading movies at home.
i've worked around them for a bit... we just talked loudly and turned the radio up. no earplugs. of course we also turned the machines off unless they were in use at that moment in time. never had machines just running. it was also a 2 man shop. so at most, 2 machines running and we weren't usually chatting while they were running. so there was no chance of forgetting that they were on, regardless of light flicker (the shop had fluorescent lights) because if it was on, we were actively cutting wood, drilling, sanding, etc.
you implicated that he's guilty when you said "Ultimately, he did break the law by copying music he didn't have a right to". nothing in there says that you think he's "likely guilty". there's actually a great chance that he is not guilty, and if he is, they have little to no proof of it. the burden of proof is on the accuser and if the RIAA can't prove that he's guilty, he wins and they pay his legal fees.
if he can actually get the courts to agree that the RIAA is wasting their time, it's a win for everyone, which is why he deserves more than a starving FLOSS developer. i equate a FLOSS developer who doesn't have a real job with an artist who refuses to join our capitalist society. our country has been capitalist for over 200 years... that's not going to change, you don't deserve my money if you can't figure that out for yourself. it's called getting a real job and making sure that anything you code on your own time belongs to you. not too difficult.
if i had the money to donate, i'd donate it to this kid. he's taking on a worthy cause (through his lawyers). chances are a "starving" FLOSS developer has the means to get a real job and afford to live, while a 16 year old kid taking on the RIAA probably doesn't.
i am a verizon customer and from what i've experienced customer satisfaction is a top priority. i received a phone in a store at the online price for new customers and without the mail-in rebate because i almost walked out. i've had mistakes made in their favor turn to my favor. and i've had no problems dealing with their sales people and technicians in their stores or over the phone.
i won't even go into how few dropped calls i've had or how great their service is in traditionally low service areas. cingular's "fewest dropped calls" bit is a joke. you can't have dropped calls if you can't get a call to go through in the first place. that's how they ended up with that number.
i think google had blurred (or flattened over) things like the white house roof in the past, but changed that policy. i really doubt google is blurring anything now.
there's another one in the atlanta area. i don't think it's on google maps yet (haven't been able to find it), but i saw it when i flew to atlanta 2 summers ago.
check that site for the rumors, they're fairly accurate and predicted last sunday's massive release. i was at a local target and they had over 50 units and there were only 16 people in line (they gave us tickets so we could wait in our cars in the below freezing weather). by the time i left, they had only given out through 28. there's now a shortage of controllers.
i'm gonna guess you don't have a kid, never been bullied (at school or otherwise), and have never worked in or for a school of any kind.
if bullying is occurring between classmates, it's the school's business because it does have a direct effect on the school and schooling of all involved, no matter when or where the bullying is occurring. your mcdonald's example of cleaning up crap has nothing to do with being popular, the manager would generally assign that task to either the new guy or quite possibly do it himself (i wouldn't have someone whose normal tasks involve handling food clean up crap, you've obviously never worked in food service either). the reason the bullying is occurring in the first place is because those involved are classmates, not because they're just kids who happened to meet but go to different schools (which does happen in parks and playgrounds, but this isn't related to that). also, many times parents don't even know the bullying is happening. the school usually finds out because they can see the effects of it (and are generally more experienced with the effects of it and dealing with it than parents). so while the actions might be happening online from home, the effect is to frighten the victim while in the presence of the bully, which is usually at school. meaning, direct relationship to school.
but it would be a lot better if it was a link to the webpage rather than an html email. there's never a reason for one in my opinion. if you want to send one, it should be a link to the newsletter on the website with some various things highlighted in the email.
i honestly have not seen any research that says we are accelerating it 100-fold. if you would like to share it with me, i'll be happy to take a look at it. that's the part of the global warming debate that is still debated in the scientific community.
again, i'll repeat myself. humans are assisting the natural warming process. it is scientifically accepted that the earth is currently in a warming phase and would be without the help of humans.
I theorize De-forestation, Amazon and Asia Logging is the culprit. that's probably a bigger cause than increased emissions. also, what a lot of people who are all about global warming seem to forget is the natural cycles of the earth. we are currently in a warming cycle to begin with. while humans are accelerating the warming, the warming would still be occurring regardless of what we do.
oh, and before i get labeled a right wing, conservative, neo-con, bible thumper, whatever, i'm not. i just don't think that extremism is good for the country and getting people to change their ways. emissions need to be reduced, forests need to stop being destroyed, and energy consumption needs to change. but the change is not going to happen overnight and people are not going to just up and change their ways. oh, and i support nuclear energy. it's currently the cleanest, most efficient form of energy we have that is not assisting the earth's natural warming process.
you conveniently leave out the fact that several people posted comments to your blog and to the universal hub blog saying that they're using the same version of opera as you and they did not have any problems with the re-designed MBTA site. by using simple deductive logic, the problem, therefore, lies with you or your computer, NOT with the MBTA's site.
and saying that you didn't need the comments and your "admin" (which happens to be a HUGE major blog hosting site) doesn't need the bandwidth and protecting your blog. you sound like you just wanted to stir up some crap and that you actually did want to start this little war. congrats, mission accomplished.
this is still unacceptable. it's a media player. there is absolutely no reason that it should be starting up at startup. same goes for adobe reader. that has an option to startup at startup. why? more and more programs say "it runs faster" if you do it that way... but you know what? the more programs that do it, the longer it takes the computer to start up. ugh.
as a resident of RI (a new england state, the guy with the question didn't mention what state), i know that when there's no lease, the landlord can give 30 days notice and the tenant must vacate (which the landlord can do 30 days from the end of the lease). of course, i'm not a landlord, so i don't know what happens if the tenant decides to squat. i imagine the court and police get involved, but i have no idea how long it takes before something happens and they are forced out.
that's what leases are for. the lease should cover a certain period of time and there should be a clause in the lease that says that the tenant agrees to vacate at the end of the lease. there will be no extensions.
people rent out houses all the time for winter or summer use in new england (depending on where the house is located). and they have to cover themselves for when they know they'll be returning.
if you originally used dreamweaver to do all the web pages, you can change all the filenames within dreamweaver, assuming you're using dreamweaver the way it's meant to be used, it'll automatically adjust all the links for you. it's pretty sweet and has saved me a ton of work (although i still generally check most of the links afterwards just as a precaution).
i've worked on a lamp that i had forgotten to unplug. i managed to strip the insulation off the power cable and hit it with my leatherman. along with the leatherman flying, sparks flew. the tip of the leatherman melted a little bit. my arm was in quite a bit of pain for the remainder of the day and i could barely move it. this was only a split second of hitting because the minute i felt it i threw the leatherman. i can't imagine what a couple second of a taser feels like going through your whole body...
i think you're a bit confused. according to every account of this incident that i've read, he was in the process of leaving when the police arrived. it sounded like the library people did not really ask him to leave only asked for his ID and when he didn't show it, they called the police, even if he started packing up his things. when the police came, they tried to handcuff him and he said that he was leaving (is it a crime to leave a building that he's allowed to use?).
they taser him, he falls, yells "i have a medical condition" and they start yelling at him to get up and go with them. meanwhile, they threaten other people who are watching that they will also be tasered. the kid yells something about the patriot act and abuse of power (which it was). he still is having a hard time getting up (although he's not fighting the police, just laying there, hardly resisting). they taser him again. he falls and screams and calls the cops "mother fuckers" (which they probably are). they yell at him to get up right after they stop (meanwhile this kid is in a TON of pain, and if he does, in fact, have a medical condition, he's probably not feeling so hot). they drag him a little more and taser him a third time because he's not getting up.
now for the icing on the cake, the chancellor of the university basically said that the cops did what they were supposed to, protecting the workers of the library from people who don't carry their student ID on them.

there's also a browser called swiftfox, which is based off firefox, but loads faster and had (i believe) a smaller memory footprint.

there's sword fighting in warioware: smooth moves.

nope, it's not google... the millstone nuclear power plant in CT is not pixelated.

no, but they seem to ignore that when they bring up global warming because they want others to believe that humans are the sole cause of it.
