  1. Drupal or WordPress on CMS Recommendations for Static Site Migration? · · Score: 2, Informative

Personally, I'd say go with drupal if you need a really flexible system than can do just about anything. That said, it can be a bit daunting. For a smaller site, I'd go with WordPress (there are rumblings that they'll end up compatible at some point down the road). One nice aspect to WordPress is that the administration console is separate from the site, so it offers a separation of paradigms for users, although they drupal is heading in that direction I believe. There's also an active community of developers behind WordPress, although that can probably be said for most of them.

  2. You're best bet on Where Is Spam When You Want It? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think your best bet for simulating spam would be to give the account to a 14-16 year old kid for a week or two. One of the types that plays stupid games and talks to their friends on messaging programs all the time. They drop their email addresses all the time without really thinking about it.

  3. I used this one too on Discrete Math Textbook Recommendations? · · Score: 1

I didn't go to class much, so I had to learn out of the textbook. I still ended up with decent marks. This book was a lot easier to handle than the professors.

  4. You Have Everything You Need on Scanning Large Amounts of Pictures? · · Score: 3, Informative

Photoshop should be just fine for what you want to do.

There should be a pallete around that lets you create actions. You basically hit the record button and go through the steps you want to do. Map that to a keystroke and voila.

When selecting the picture, you could even used a fixed width box, so all of the pictures will have the same dimensions. For the action, you could have it copy what you've selected, create a new image and paste the selection into it. Then have it merge layers and auto-adjust the levels/contrast and then have it bring up the save dialog box.

All you're really left doing is scanning the set of pictures, clicking the mouse once (for the fixed width box), hitting the keystroke and then typing in the name of the file.

  6. Not So Likely on P2P Streaming Radio · · Score: 2, Interesting

Just like any sort of encryption scheme or digital rights system, there's always a vulnerability, the human factor.

Somehow, someone will figure out some sort of system or program to trace the stream to it's origin. They'd like to think it's secure/untraceable, but someone will find a way around it.

  7. Written Exams on Are Written Computer Science Exams a Fair Measure? · · Score: 2, Interesting

All the exams I've taken at the University level have been written. I found that beyond some of the initial pop quizzes where they're teaching you a language, it becomes more concept oriented. My final exam for a data structures course allowed us to use Java (or C++, etc), pseudo-code or witten english, as long as got your algorithm concept accross.

On the other hand, for my functional programming course (Haskell and Prolog, especially the Haskell) if you had things slightly off, it could totally change the way the program works.

I find the professors also tend to come up with creative weighting for the courses. Between exams, tests and assignments, I have a lot of leeway with my marks. I can fail (or skip) two midterms and make my final exam worth 90 instead of 50 and so on. If you do better on the exam, it can be weighted higher.

I think the main reason they use the written exams for the highest percentage of the mark is the ability to control cheating. It's much easier to cheat electonically. At some point, computer science departments will gain faith in their security systems and ability to prevent cheating.

Millions upon millions of people have downloaded WinAmp and it's default interface is ugly as sin. It's the simplicity and ability to customize it that bring people back. I see the same thing happening with mozilla, it's not easy to skin IE without using a third party application (even those don't always work right). It has a future.

I deleted all the default bookmarks long ago because i don't go to any of the sites. Now is it the browser that redirects you through another site or is it the website itself. We've heard about Microsoft redirecting hotmail logins through a passport site first. So as far as those default bookmarks go, is it the browser that has to be looked at or the websites themselves?

  12. i ain't done anything illegal before on Dr. Dre Might Sue Napster Users? · · Score: 1

Poor guy, i'm sure he needs more money. Seems to me that's what he's in it for. All of the artists, they keep bringing up the fact that downloading copyrighted material is illegal and that they lose money. If that's the only illegal thing kids are doing these days, it's probably not all that bad. My guess is that a guy like Dre and the members of Metallica are perfect angels and have never done anything illegal in their lifetimes. Dre raps about smoking blunts, pimpin and shooting people, good thing he stands against crimes like downloading mp3s. There are people out there who would never have gone out and bought a Dre album or a Metallica album if it had not been for mp3s. They search around and say, hmm Metallica sure why not? They listen to a few tracks and go man i really like this, I'll support em and go out and by the album. Maybe if artists didnt curn out so much crap. Go beyond the two or three good songs on a cd and make the entire thing worth going out and buying. Maybe include some other incentive on the cd that makes us want to buy it.
