    The actual phrase is "par for the course", like in golf.

    The vast majority of "kids" I deal with these days have a crippling sense of entitlement. Interviewing people is downright painful. The attitude seems to be "I've show up to claim my job" instead of "let me prove to you that I'll be a good investment"

    That may not actually be a sense of entitlement. In college, when nearing graduation, we were given interview advice. The important parts to remember were "be confident" and "they're not just interviewing you, you're also interviewing them". I can easily see people overdoing it and looking like they have a crippling sense of entitlement.

    As someone who was once just as annoyed by this nonsensical statement, let me give you some advice: Let it go.

    People are able to grasp the meaning of the statement, and it's in use by so many people now that I've stopped trying to fight it. After trying to explain so many times why "X times less" is wrong, I've given up. I suggest you do, too.

    "Enthused" still annoys me, though.
    And "I could care less" pisses me off to no end.

    Since he seems to have been convicted under the EAR, which is a set of regulations having to do with rendering technical aid to foreigners, and not the ITAR, which is a set of regulations about exporting actual objects (such as munitions or rocket-control thingies),

    Are you sure you have that correct? I know nothing about EAR, but I've seen plenty of source code with ITAR restrictions (and no, the code wasn't related to rocket controls or anything). I can't imagine that source code would fall under "actual objects" rather than "technical aid".

His site, he claims, will have a very reasonable monthly access fee and discreet billing. And Justice Thomas gets in free.

    Get out of the 90's? Where cave were you living in when Vista was released? It had plenty of security problems, and while it didn't have much in the way of crashes it compensated by being the very definition of bloat.

    If we ever hit the magical Year of the Linux Desktop, where ordinary users suddenly switch to Linux in droves, it'll be due to Linux's strengths, not Microsoft's mistakes. Proclaiming that the Linux Revolution is upon us every time Microsoft slips up will only make you look silly.

    On a side note, the year of the Linux desktop was about 3 years ago for me.

    In proud /. tradition I haven't actually read the article, but at any point does it mention that you're probably getting a better return on your money when buying a game?
    What I mean is: say you have $30. You can either buy a couple music CDs with that, or you could buy a DVD movie (maybe two, if they aren't new releases), or you could buy a game like Team Fortress 2, Bioshock, Supreme Commander, etc... Which option is going to entertain you more, and for longer?

    In my view, buying the music CDs would be the least effective use of your money.

    One other thing to remember is that the BOFH is willing to resort to murder to deal with "problem" users, and is able to do so without getting caught. That's not something that easily translates to real life.

    Somehow, when people learn that their machine is being used to host images of 8-year-olds being sexually abused, they suddenly take the concept of computer security a lot more seriously.

    Not that I'm advocating anybody should tell a devious lie to a friend in order to make him/her smarten the hell up ... I'm just saying is all.

    There's absolutely no reason to lie to your friend in the name of security.
    Just compromise his machine and put some kiddie porn on it. For bonus points, notify the FBI and wait near his house with a folding chair, some soda, and a bag of popcorn.

    ...or was that what you do to enemies? Crap, I have some apologizing to do.
