The thing is, if you have a choice for a backend server, PostgreSQL really delivers all the same functionality as Firebird, but a whole lot more. Some of the gaps with Firebird are: No inherent replication solution, no GIS support (like PostGIS), more limited range of SQL functions, less language extensibility options (functions in Firebird can be added, but only through writing platform-dependent DLLs), no XML support (dunno if PostgreSQL is much better on XML).
