Redhat's success is what has gained it enemies. If redhat was #5, it would not be a target.
Slashdot has been incredibly irresponsible in posting many misleading and incorrect redhat stories lately, and it's a good sign that the site isn't in good shape anymore.
Hey Redhat people: How about a site listing some of the things redhat has done for the linux community? I know redhat has been involved with bringing a lot of third-pary companies more into the linux world, but the response on slashdot is always "Why Redhat? My mom says distro X is better" without realizing the work that is involved, and it's not a random event.
Redhat has done more to help Linux than all the other distros combined. You see companies starting to support Linux, or release software or drivers for Linux, and there is a good chance that Redhat had something to do with it.
I don't know how they do it, I'd have said "fuck yall" a long time ago.
is a fish pickup sound. I can't tell if I picked up the fish or missed it.
(I'm hoping the author sees this)
Other than that, A real solid game. I was unable to compile it on my linux box, which doesn't have OpenGL, but I played on windows at work, and it was a quality, fun game. Much improved since I first saw it months ago.
have yourself a kid, then when the kid is a few years old, harvest some of his organs. a kidney here, part of a liver, maybe a couple other odds and ends.
Scary thing is, it's going to happen. It's all a question of when, and what ethics need to be, or can be, enforced.
"Maybe the community needs to find a new place to hang."
I'd say that has much more truth to it than you may realize.
/. doesn't represent the linux community anymore. Not at all. Lack of any attempts at journalism, lame excuses as to why they won't bother to try to mirror sites before posting stories about them, then bringing the poor sites to their knees, or costing the poor sap who's site it is hundreds of dollars in extra bandwidth charges, while slashdot reaps thousands in banner fees for posting the story. Posting the same story several times, proving the staff doesn't even browse the stories on their own site, they simply cut and paste work sent in by others, usually without even checking the links (how do they decide the story is worth posting if they didn't follow the link in the first place?)
Since I'm not able to tell if that's sarcasm (sorry) It would have been a courtesy to Redhat to allow them a chance to respond before posting the story on the largest linux site on the planet.
the survivor TV show had huge ratings, and the mere million they gave the winner is a tiny, tiny portion of ad revenues for that #1 rated show.
a mir space survivor TV show, where you get to know the cosmonauts, and watch them take space challenges like drinking tang as it flies around the room in zero g, or spacewalk first around the station, then finally as they are ejected into space after being voted off, would be huge.:)
On the evil side, microsoft's control of a large percentage of stock gives them some real leverage over Corel. Sure, they can't vote, but at the drop of a hat, they could dump all their stock and cause Corel to become literally worthless.
On the good side, Corel was practically worthless to begin with. It was looking fairly likely that they could go under at any time. This investment seems to at least keep Corel, as one of the largest contributing companies to Linux, afloat for a while longer, whatever the actual motivation for it may be, that is the immediate result.
Good or bad? Maybe some of both. It's definitely puzzling though, and the final result is just a little uncomfortable.
no demand be "a major blow to the linux community"?
Do you ever notice how everyone thinks their own needs are the most important?
Redhat is obviously not making any money from their sparc version, and is making the smart decision to drop it. If people were buying it, they would certainly keep producing it, it's a business decision, and a good one.
My question to the person submitting this article is, did you buy the sparc version, or did you download it?
First off, I think it's great. Right now, the only people using Linux are programmers who've had more computers than girlfriends, so something like this is fairly useless. But, Linux is growing fast, and there will be more and more people who don't live for computers, but would like to write some quick app.
But, I was pretty sure Basic was Microsoft's property. Isn't this going to run into some type of legal trouble if it resembles the M$ creation? They didn't even try to name it differently, so I think it's likely to be a close copy in context as well.
what do I do with it? Has anyone in the/. community found a really good use for one? I heard mention of a CD database at one time.
It's interesting scanning stuff for a while, but that wears off quickly. there must be something else they are good for.
ya, I know my karma is screwed, but I really want to know. these things are fun, but there must be an actual valid use for them other than finding websites.
If you can't make the connection between what the antitrust case will mean to Linux, or the NTFS suit, the Kerberos stuff that happened a while ago, or even what the fact that Linux doesn't have a browser that can view pages designed for MSIE, and the 90% of web users running it, then you can happily kiss my ass.
since it's attached to netscape now, and linux is the biggest supporter of netscape (since we don't have the #1 browser available)
and ignoring all the people who want to kill linux by protesting any program that tries to come to the platform without opening all their source or releasing binaries for each of the 15,0000 possible linux setups, stuff like this is still good news. Hopefully, someday it won't be news anymore when an app comes to linux.

That seems like a huge weakness in Linux if it's true.

This same problem in Debian wouldn't be posted here in 20 years. Unless you think Debian doesn't have any bugs...

I mean, tiny little news sites do it, and it definitely is important information.
just wondering.

if this story is true, Redhat is going down hard. the Linux community doesn't go for that kind of shit at all.
