They probably won't treat this as a criminal act. It will be treated as an act of war. Which it is. You can bet that the US and Nato millitary assets will deal with this. As soon as they figure out which bunch of cowards did this.
And what exactly would ATC do? All ATC has is a Radar and a Radio. The folks in the cockpit of the airliners who are doing this can very simply turn off their radio (Or ignore it). In the time it would take to get from any of the 3 New York airports to the World Trade Center (Probably about 3-4 Minutes) there is not a damn thing anyone can do.
I imagine a bunch of folks at New York Aproach Control watched this in total horor in the radar, but there was not anything they could actualy do about it.
No way its a Navigation Error. Its a bright sunny day. Any flight crew that could pass a Class 1 medical could see the building. And While I don't have a chart here I don't think that the WTC is near any of the routes in or out of any of the major NY/NJ Airports. (JFK,LGA,EWK,TEB etc)
You can also listen to his interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air. The interview is about his book and was very well done. It was also talked about here on slashdot a while back.
Actualy I think the study addressed that. But I'm going off of memory of a report I heard on NPR several years back. Your right there is nothing in my post that idicates that. However that study which one could find I imagine if you looked. Probably does.
It is also true that playing chess will not help all kids, but nor will playing SimCity or any other one game. And a plus of chess is that you can buy a chess set for $15 or so.
A study done a few years ago showed that High School kids (It may have been Jr High) that were on a Chess team "The Raging Rooks" Did better on tests and got better grades than average. Chess is a good thing to teach kids. And lets face it in 50 or 60 years will anyone still know what SimCity is? People will still be playing chess which in one form or another has been around for 1000+ years.
Only on shabbos on Yom Tov. You still get to worry the other 6 days. As for were to sign up, CYLOR:
Consult Your Local Orthodox Rabbi.

OH the LHR-JFK (and LGW-EWK) runs are still big. BA alone does about 10 flights a day each way. The smallest (JFK-LGW) on a 767. Add all the other airlines going New York to London and you will find that you probably have 25 or so large airliners going each way each day.
It is important to figure out what is important and what is not. And if you have a family the family is more important than the job. Unless lives are at risk, which for some jobs is true, you have to be willing to tell them that your time is yours. On Shabbos my cell phone is turned off. There is nothing in the office so important that they will need to get me on Shabbos. Nothing.
Computer people have somehow been suckered into thinking that working 60 hrs and 7 days a week is normal and healthy and it isn't. Take a day off spend it with your family and friends.
Well it probably wouldn't do what you want. Most fighters can't stay supersonic for a long time. For one thing they don't have the fuel. For another the engines were not designed to do it.
There are a lot of cheaper aircraft that go slower but can still do better than the airlines for midrange hops. If you are flying on a King Air (twin turbo-prop) about 300 kts I think. You probably can do better than on an airliner for several reasons:
1) It goes when you want to not when the airline wants it to.
2) You can go to a lot of smaller GA airports that the airlines don't fly into. So instead of flying to a hub then renting a car and driving for 2 hrs you might be able to go direct.
3) You can skip the hubs. There are over 5,000 airports in the USA. In a GA plane you can go to any of them. OK the jets can't get into many of the smaller ones. But if you need to get say Berlin NH (I think there is an airport there) or somewhere like that where there is no airline service it is a major win.
Hell it can even be a major win in something like a Cessna 172 which flys at about 105kts.
Well maybe because they are not useing it to admin a box. But to have a meeting.
BTW The fastest current private Jet is the Cessna Citation X, it cruises at Mach 0.92. It is infact the fastest civilian jet except the concorde.

2) No way to keep people off of a group. The newsgroup soc.culture.jewish has been useless for years. It seems every anti-semite and evangalist on the internet feals the need to post his or her drek there. I am on a bunch of mailing lists which are moderated, and as such have much more useful converstation. It is nice to be able to say to someone we don't care if you belive in "X" its not wanted here.
3) Propigation time. It often takes several days for usenet messages to get from here to there and this makes a conversation much harder.
I have to say that one of the nicest things for me is that I observe the Jewish Sabbath, and from Friday Sundown to Saturday Sundown I don't touch my computer or phone or TV. I totaly forget my email. I don't worry about my bills or anything else. There is nothing so important in my email that it can't wait until sunday.
Thankfuly the biggest list I'm on is mostly of people who observe the Sabbath, so it goes to about 0 for that day anyhow.
But try it sometime, take a day off from the modern world, its nice. And it gives you a nice chance to have a conversation face to face.
You know with all the privacy advocates around here you would think someone would think this is an invation. I mean how long you are using the can for is a rather private thing. OK yes your dorm mates may know from time to time as they wait for you. But does the entire world need to know when and for how long you are using the bathroom.
The problem is that at the entry level you can put up a web site very cheaply ($10/month or less) On the other hand if you want to have interesting content you do need to spend time or money to create it. Yes for 1 hr of work and $10 a month I can put up a web site. But to have a large complex site costs money. Or someone being dedicated and doing it as a hobby. I've seen good and bad sites in both catagories.
Actualy I met my fiance via a friend I met on an internet mailing list via yahoogroups. I will say that one of the most popular topics on the internet is religion. I can name quite a few good Orthodox Jewish web sites that I have used. And incase anyone can use them here are a few good ones.
You know I don't see it as being lazy or stupid to not put up your own page. You just might not have the time or energy or have anything that needs a web page. Ok sure I could put up a web page with a picture of my cats and such but in truth who cares? Many of those people who you acuse of being to lazy or stupid are neither. They just have lives that don't revolve around the net. They have kids to spend time with and bills to pay.
When I get around having kids (G-d willing), and the choice comes to 1) put up a web page, 2) spend time with the kids. I will go with 2 every time.
I also don't see a problem with a few big companies getting 50% of the hits on the internet. There are thousands of small groups with web sites no one is stoped from looking at those site, and many people do. But it does mean that whats on the web sites of the big 4 is not useful (to someone) or relivant.
Well many of the machines on it have their own internal security. But the major way it is secure is that it does not connect to the outside internet. To use it you have to be in a government building which has a guy at the door with a gun to make sure you are wearing a badge with the correct picture etc on it.
The thing they are probably most worried about is when someone who does have privs decides to give (or sell) information to someone who shouldn't have it. Hacking in would be almost imposable as there is no way to connect from the outside.
In a word it can't. If you say use the internet to rob a bank in Australia they might get the US government to put you on a plane so they can try you. (Hell extradition happens all the time) However the US government has a lot of discression on how they do that.
But if we are talking about a civil suit there is not much they can do unless you have some assets in Australia.
They can issue a summons to/. but unless slashdot has some form of pressense down there there is not much they can do. If they show up in Middlesex county court (Where Andover.net is located) in mass with a summons from the state of New South Wales Austraila they probably won't get very far.
Sure you can sue someone in Australia but unless they are in Australia or have some form of assets there it is not a very usefull thing to do. As even if you win you won't get anything.
True, in some places not in others. In some places the altertives were taken away by war. (Sudan, Laos, Guadamala etc). Or by governments gone mad, the Taliban for example. Or by eviormental issues, its hard to farm with no water (Ethopia etc).
Hate to break it to you but in many places it happened years ago. Look at the label of the shirt you are wearing, it probably does not say "Made in the USA" there is a reason for that. Its a lot cheaper to make them in India or China. My Mother is CEO of a textile company that manufactures stuff here in the USA, and they are having a lot of trouble with imports.
Because lets face it in many parts of the world the average person gets by on $2/day or less and if you pay someone $10-12 a day and give them a room with 4 walls and a roof to live in they are doing a lot better than they were. These guys in Russia are making by local standards a lot of money. I heard an Interview on NPR a while back with a factory worker in China who was making about $400 a month, as a low level manager. He lived in a 1 dorm room and slept on a cot. But he was still able to send money home to send a sibling to school.
The US does make companies pay a penalty for doing this its called a Tarif on imports. But it doesn't work so well on digital goods.
The problem is that if you buy 1.2 million in cheap clone hardware, is that you get cheap clone hardware. The 390 mainframe is setup so that if you set it up right it will go years without a reboot. The 1000 pc clones will need a small army of people to look after them etc. Go with the mainframe!
They probably won't treat this as a criminal act. It will be treated as an act of war. Which it is. You can bet that the US and Nato millitary assets will deal with this. As soon as they figure out which bunch of cowards did this.

They just refuel in the air.

Well there are several problems with usenet.
1) Hard to create a new newsgroup
2) No way to keep people off of a group. The newsgroup soc.culture.jewish has been useless for years. By the way, if you want privacy, don't use a PUBLIC FUCKING BATHROOM!
It is the bathroom of a dorm building. I would guess that the folks who live there have to use it. Unless they want to run down the street to go.
You know with all the privacy advocates around here you would think someone would think this is an invation. I mean how long you are using the can for is a rather private thing.
