I'm not sure you're 100% correct. Judging by my vinyl collection, smaller, tighter grooves are higher frequencies and the bigger grooves are more BASS and lower frequency oriented.
That's how when you look at a record, you can see the 'break' of a record.
trance records are typically able to contain a lot more audio than Drum and Bass, etc.
Hahaha. Leave it to slashdot to produce people who think they know EVERYTHING that has to do with anything technologically related. Have you ever stepped out of your house and went out? DJ's, like it or not, are still dropping electronic beats in one of HUNDREDS of unique 'styles'. Many of these DJ's then become producers &/or remixers.
Electronic isn't dead; it never will be. Perhaps you mean that electronic/dance music isn't being pushed into the U.S.public (as much), which would be partially true. But to anyone in 'the scene', this is a godsend.
Oh, to support this, go look on ebay for some technic 1200's -- They are STILL selling like hotcakes and pulling much impressive prices.
And I hate to tell you, but not many people who simply listen to ole' fashion' records are going to be purchasing a MANUAL turntable; No, the people who are purchasing these manual turntables want to have direct manipulation.
Ala hip-hop or electronic. One could argue that both are the same, have you listened to rap/hiphop beats at all these days? Same ole drum machines, plenty of samplers, yadda yadda.
Electronic is alive & kicking, weather the un-informed public is aware or not.
I think what they are trying to do (as someone mentioned above) is consider tripwire for Linux a seperate product from the tripwire for other OS'ii. If this is the case, they only have to release the source for the "Linux Version" - but not from the "Other versions".
Everyone agrees that they cannot restrict the use of the "Linux version source" that they release - it will be ported to everything under the sun, no doubt. BUT, they can chose NOT to release the source for the "other versions". Deal?
Picture, if you will, a kitchen equipped with a slim laptop on the house's wireless lan. You feel like a change from your regular diet of ramen and Mt. Dew, so you head for your local online grocer (HomeGrocer in my area) and order up the makings for some seriously good pasta.
Not quite what you describe, however Internet Appliance is doing something very similar to what you describe. The little webpad / slim-notebook can only be used for the internet, with it's 'special' browser, however, it has the potential to become much more.
I am not sure what the website says about it; Most of my information comes from another guy at work, who will be on their technical support team. Also note: The keyboard in the picture is wireless, and should have a decent range.

Since WaveLan cards apply to the IEEE802.11 standard, they also work with Apple's Airport base station.
This seems like a great option for those home users with both iBook's / Powermacs, and their linux / unix boxes and laptops.
The cost of the airport is cheaper than the mentioned wavelan base, but I have heard it doesn't work quite as well. Anyways, to each his own. Ben Brewer brewer@nullified.org & tidepool@suspicious.org
What single language (besides C/C++) do you find yourself most productive in? And, as a subset to this question, What are the specific reasons (if any) for chosing this specific language? Is it very efficent or does it just match your thinking style?

"... the other case aims to prevent people from using DeCSS, a program that can unscramble encrypted digital video disks (DVD) and let people copy them...."
This is what is happening with the entire DeCSS trial and media saturation; They don't understand it, yet they report as if they do. In the above statement from the Salon reporter, DeCSS is classified as a "program that can unscramble and copy dvds". As most./'ers know, this is _almost_ the case.
The media either, A: Doesn't understand the purpose of the DeCSS code (to enable playback of DVD's) or B: Understands what the DeCSS software is meant to do, yet reports on it the way it does, because it makes for a better story. Blame it on the evil 'hackers', they want to steal things, and copy DVD's all over the world.
End of my pointless rant. Ben Brewer brewer@nullified.org
Although having a wireless LAN is _very_ neat and geekworthy, the l0pht have been working on a wireless project now for a few years. (Yes, it's usually on the back burner, but according to the L0pht / @stake merger FAQ they are going to hopefully put more efforts and funding into the project.
The project is called guerrilla.net. While most of the 'work' has yet to be done, they have set up a list of goals and ideals for the future - A very important step before such an interesting project takes place on a larger scale.
I know I would personally like to get involved in something similar to this; having a wireless 'intranet' of sorts (complete with 'gateways' to the _real_ internet) would 'tickle my pickle' quite well.
E-mail me if you are as interested in this as I am.
For those of you that do not know what benefits are in FreeBSD 4.0, here are a list of new / improved features: Some New Features include:
The VM system's anonymous storage subsystem (the swap pager) has been completely revamped. It should be a little faster, with less glitches. An emulator for SVR4 binaries has been added. [i386] Driver support has been added for PCI fast ethernet cards based on the ADMtek Inc. AL985 Centaur chipset. Driver support has been added for SysKonnect SK-984x PCI gigabit ethernet adapters. Driver support has been added for Adaptec Duralink PCI ethernet adapters based on the Adaptec AIC-6915 fast ethernet controller. Driver support has been added for PCI fast ethernet adapters based on the Sundance Techno-logies ST201 controller, including the D-Link DFE-550TX. Driver support has been added for PCI fast ethernet adapters based on the Silicon Integrated Systems SiS 900 and SiS 7016 ethernet controllers. Driver support has been added for PCI fast ethernet adapters based on the Davicom DM9100 and DM9102 ethernet controllers, including the Jaton Corporation XpressNet. The top-level category security has been added, and IPFW now uses syslog(3) to log all messages to/var/log/security. A new jail(2) system call and admin command (jail(8)) have been added for additional flexibility in creating secure process execution environments. The base C/C++ compiler has been upgraded from GCC 2.7.2 to EGCS 1.1.2. This gives users full ISO C++ support.
System Requirements: Standard ISA, EISA, VL, or PCI bus based PC (386sx to Pentium), 8MB RAM, 100MB disk space for a binary-only system & 340MB for a full development system.
Although one must look at the past to see what _lone_ people have done. Think of the Uni-Bomber(s), and the rest of the _lone_ people that get away with devistating actions. Where, _get away_ doesn't mean they go unpunished, but they had still carried out their acts well enough to satisfy themselves.
Organizations are bigger targets. Being a bigger target, gets you noticed by more people, and more people jump on the "The NSA is evil" bandwagon.
In my little opinion, I believe _any_ type of this spying on the residents is wrong; No matter if it is done by the NSA or James Bond himself. It's just the fact that James Bond tends to go un-noticed (He's a sly guy, afterall).
As an IRC addict^h^h^h^h^h regular, I could understand why one would prefer to reside on a smaller network.
Although I have never been on the so-called "Newnet", I think it's safe to assume that it does not have as many netsplits as say, Undernet or Efnet. Although 'Newnet' may have many warez channels, Both Undernet and Efnet have their fair share.
Another thing to be concerned about on Efnet, is the over-abundance of packet monkies that reside on the network. These are packet monkies with 'skill' (skill in the denial of service field, hardly resume material), who could easily take large servers and/or individual connections down.
