I'm glad that the people making LoTR decided to use Linux because now we will most likely get better effects. Now I just hope that other companies would look at Linux seriously... It would spread linux much more, AND the companies would be saving money so they could produce better/cheaper products.

All the trading is done *directly* between the users. Hopefully they will find some loophole and keep on going. otherwise, get mynapster from MyNapster.com load it up on opennap servers, and your set. In fact, it's better than the original napster IMHO.

  10. Bad Reporting on MPAA v. 2600 NY Trial Has Ended · · Score: 2

From the article: The computer code the judge may opt to protect would make it possible for anyone to copy DVDs.

Does this seem like a completely uninformed statement to anyone else?
First off, it makes it sound like decrypting a DVD is the only way to copy it. This is simply not the case, in fact for pirated DVDs, you'd think people would want them copied exactly the way you could get them in the store, for compatibility reasons.
Second, it makes it sound like anyone off the street will be able to just pick up a DVD and make a copy if DeCSS is not banned. This is not correct either, as it takes a lot of effort to rip a DVD, and turn it into something useful. There is also bandwidth, quality of the copy, etc... to consider that would prevent many people from copying, or obtaining copies.

This is what the general public is seeing about this case, and they will side with the big companies. This kind of innaccurate reporting needs to be stopped.

This license is even less restrictive than the GPL... It's not every day we get software of this quality under a license this non-restrictive. Lets all write to Borland and thank them, maybe it will send a message. If they got good feedback it could mean more quality open-source.

  17. This wont stop DeCSS on Civil Disobedience and DeCSS · · Score: 1

No matter what the ruling turns out to be, you will still be able to find DeCSS Everywhere. It cant be stopped now, it's too late.

The problem will be the precedence that this ruling will set for software that *isnt* as easy to keep distributing as DeCSS. If DeCSS happened to have say 20MB of source, how many people would still be distributing it so freely? Bandwidth and many other factors are important to people when they are showing their "civil disobedience".

I think that we should set up a site somewhere out of the US that holds all this type of software... oh wait, one is already being set up in ?Sealand? (can't remember the name) Yet who knows how much it would cost to store a 20MB program that lets you view "unauthorized" images/videos/text/etc...

I just hope this ruling is in DeCSS's favor, not for the sake of DeCSS, but all the software that will be banned after it.

The athlon does take advantage of some technologies that the P3 has yet to use, but once it does, I predict it will be faster than the Athlon in *most* areas of performance.

The biggest problem will be the price. That is why I think the Athlon has done so well all this time. For 50% less money, you get a chip that performs only 5% worse than the intel equivelant. I think that is why most people, myself included, like Athlons.
